I’m a cultural anthropologist through cake! I love vintage aprons and testing vintage recipes. The style of the apron, the ingredients of the recipe, the kitchen tools used... ALL say so much about history and the way people celebrated life through cooking. Plus, baking cakes and eating them is fun. If you have any cake suggestions or want to add any historical information related to the featured apron or cake, please let me know. Happy baking!
Is the custard similar to the "German" chocolate cake? That is my dad's fav and he was shocked to hear what aI learned ok Wilipedia. C'mon there are no coconuts in Germany. Thanks for the video! Maybe I'll try this one sometime now that I recenly bought a stand mixer.
Yes, it can be similair, depending on what you use. The main difference is the fruit that goes into the Lane Cake. Most German Chocolate Cakes have the nuts and coconut but not the fruit in the filling. And the Lane Cake filling is not as sticky, where as the German Chocolate cake has more of a richer, sticky filling . I love German Chocolate Cake too!!🤩
Egg whites are often used in cakes instead of egg yolks because they provide structure and leavening, (A denser and more fluffy cake -they give "rise" to the cake.) While egg yolks add flavor and richness, I think the main flavor for most white cakes is from the sugar and vanilla and/or almond extract, so you don't need the yolks. And the whipped egg whites make the cake taller and more fluffy. (I love your question. Thank you!)
I am so thrilled RU-vid recommended your channel to me. I am a terrible baker, but I love all things cake. What's most fascinating to me is the way you incorporate baking and etiquette of the past alongside your recipes. I believe I have stumbled upon a little piece of heaven!❤
The shortening in your cake would most likely have been butter, or even tallow or lard. Crisco only became known as "the only true shortening" due to an ad campaign in the fifties or so.
I love this comment, Emily! It is always interesting deciphering old recipes. Crisco was introduced in June 1911 by Procter & Gamble. But I know that Crisco has changed throughout the years. I wonder how this recipe would have been different if I had used butter? If you have a moment check out another video that I did on gingerbread. I used a recipe from a 1913 Crisco recipe book.

I was born in 79. So happy to learn what was out in that year and in the 70’s since I was born the last 6 months of it. I’m kinda a 70’s and 80’s baby.
I wish I could remember the cereal name that had a clear 45” Scooby doo record that you had to cut out from the back of the cereal box (so the record was the square lower half of the back of the cardboard box with the clear plastic round record part). It would have been in the 70’s but I cant remember the details and I have asked online like this periodically over the years but no one has ever heard of it. Maybe I should say it was in the Houston, Texas area… idk if that has anything to do with anything or not but maybe different box prizes were delivered to different parts of the country or something??? I could see it not being a big hit because it was the outside of the box (not a prize inside) that you had to cut out. And it wasn’t very noticeable-I was just a Scooby Doo fanatic and I believe the box had a story to read on the back (which I did & came across the place to cut out for the record)! But even if you cut the record out perfectly straight, the cardboard and clear plastic record were not sturdy so they would be wavy, causing the record to skip (if you remember recored players, you can imagine how testy it was). It was just a super cool idea, sorta like a clue for a treasure, which was thrilling for me as a Scooby Doo enthusiast & made me feel like a detective! Lol so silly the goofiest things we remember fondly from our childhood. Anyway….keep up the good work! Nostalgia is important! Many blessings! 🙏🇺🇸💕
For some reason the auto closed captions that normally play during video previews weren’t working so when I had the sound off it just looked funny because you were silently presenting the desserts and smiling. It was kinda giving 50s housewife ad vibes. 😂 I was like hmm I wonder if this will be a silent video with no talking and then I turned the sound on and was like ah that makes more sense.
Haha! :) I bet it looked funny - I love those old refrigerator and house appliance commercials from the 1950s, they were inspiring to me while making the intro of these videos. However, I think I fixed the closed captioning! It should be on now - thanks!!
Thanks for the demo! I've spent hours doing screenshots of vintage recipes I find online, and this is one I saw and always yearned to try. I do love chiffon cakes -- and this one is stunning! ❤️
