Hi Steven here and welcome to Worldview Outdoors. This site is about family friendly hiking, camping, backpacking and gear reviews.
My family and I have hiked in every state we've lived (SC, AK, MI, WV, KY, IN, and even FL). Currently we’re back in AK a second time. Carrying a rucksack (backpack) on my back began almost twenty years ago when I joined the U.S. Army. If anything this is a family friendly site. Filming is fun, exciting, and we'd love for you to SUBSCRIBE and follow along on our solo and family hikes. It would be awesome to see more people enjoying the outdoors. This is God's creation and we have a moral and ethical obligation to take care of it.

It is great to see a video of someone backpacking this trail. I am hoping to do it as it is just a unique trail. Do you know if you can just set your tent up anywhere along the trail? Also, I only have enough time to do about 45 miles. Is there a section that you would recommend? Thanks!
45 is most of the trail plenty of towns and camp sites i parked at one end and someone picked up western end definitely more the WV sub culture-in my opinion
From that same paring lot there are some far superior options including the Douglas trail up to Eagles point or the trail to Copperas Falls. Osborne Bend is always muddy up there on that ridge.
Oh no offence taken. I heard 40ozs is a lot and I thought wth. My big 75L pack is 5lbs and my zero bag is 4. Just those two items is half the weight I usually carry. But my 5 days on the AT at 25lbs I think is fairly good. My tent is by Lanshan. Perfect summer tent. I haven't had it in the rain yet.
I just got mine and wore it last night (like others, ~ 30f) with a cashmere sweater and regular shirt (no baselayer). I thought that was about as cold as I'd want to go without a true base layer and maybe a bit more thermal work on my part. It'd be nice for something this light to keep me warm (walking) down to 5-10f without a base layer but I guess I'm dreaming
Good video, but kind of misleading. You have a light base weight for sure, but it’s not going to be anywhere close to 6.5 pounds in reality. You didn’t list a phone or charging equipment. No pot or stove. No hygiene kit. No poop kit. Your wool shirt by itself is almost a pound, and that’s gonna live in your pack 95% of the time. I think you’re dreaming a little bit.
However, how warm is it without layering? I have a smart wool jacket I use as a base layer. Presently, the coldest weather I have had is 30 F. I have worn only the jacket on a 5 mile walk with just a Buffalo Gear wind shirt. It was surprisingly warm.
@@doxasticc where's your source that this specific farm does? I don't make those sort of assumptions. Whether or not the farm does kill them, natural animal fibers are more ethical than synthetic fibers in this particular case.
@@raffikkiz I don't need a source, the burden of proof is on you. It would have to be some extremely specialized farm to not kill them. I've never even heard of such a thing. All commercial farms, of anything, slaughter. If they don't, they can't remain commercially viable. Animals that are old and sickly are no longer useful, so they're killed. And "whether or not the farm kills them, natural fibers are more ethical" is utter nonsense.
Did my AT thru hike this year and that Base Weight is darn impressive. I started Feb 16 with a base weight of 12lbs. One liter Smart Water bottle 2.2lbs, and three days of food at six pounds. Obviously, as I got trail legs, revamped my food supply, and sent home the warmer clothes my packed lighten up a bit but I think it hovered consistently at 24-25lbs after a resupply. I don’t see any trail videos, did you complete your hike?
I got the 20° Bandit. Mine is long wide and no taper. I love it, but my one complaint is that it's a little bulky when I'm packing. The stuff sack is too large for my liking. I am considering using a heavier compression sack that allows me to pack it smaller. I opted for the 850 down. Wondering if I should have waited and gone for the 950 down. I am glad I opted for the larger size. I toss and turn and I'm just under 6' and not slim.
My wife & I are backpacking the Knobstone, one section at a time. We're 70ish, and one section at a time is enough for us. We enjoy and appreciate your videos on this trail. Very informative. I do have a question: In your opinion, does it matter if we backpack South, Leota to New Chapel, or North, New Chapel to Leota? Thanks for your opinion.
That’s so funny you are carrying a pump. I have a base weight about 20 lbs and a pump isn’t even in my radar in terms of things I’d like to carry. We all pack our own fears and we all have different priorities in regards to luxury items. 👍🏼🦶
@@WorldviewOutdoors Thank you so much for the response. Jacket looks great on you. I will grab a size medium. I am same size in Altras as well! I bought my son some Altras and he loves that they are comfortable.
I have the same bag, except in orange. It was added to my sleeping bag fleet this past summer. I used it on a thru-hike of the Uinta Highline Trail in Utah where we stayed above 10k feet for the entire 8-day hike. Even though the hike was in June, I too found this bag to be very warm on those 30 deg Utah nights. I additionally own a Zpacks 10deg over-filled sleeping bag that I am extremely confident with it in the backcountry! Enjoyed your detailed review. JBEN⚡️HIKES
Im 5.9 and 162lbs do you think I can get away with a S size ? I like athletic fit and the reviews on their page say they run relaxed /loose fit (?) usually I’m between S and M in hoodies . How much does it weight ? The crew . Im not liking the hood , it’s just bulk and weight I will use the hood of my sunhoodie underneath and/or my beenie :) Thank you for your help
I own three styles. All fit the same to me. All of mine are medium. Im 5’ 11’’ and 165-170lbs. I think a small would feel rather snug. Weight avg15-16oz
Rain jacket and cold weather gear come out to close to if not over 2lbs and you have it listed at 1.18lbs? -15 oz Alpaca -7.5 oz Torrid -3? oz Vertice (no weight given) -3.4 oz Pants -1.6 oz Windbreaker =30.5 oz / 1.9lbs
Alpaca is normally worn while hiking. Technically colder weather only. I should have listed as clothing worn. Understand the confusion (not part of base weight). Pack base weight section still at 16 oz.
Much of the trail follows old forest service access roads and logging roads in what is now the Clifty Wilderness. This is why you will find mud in areas most of the year. Very old rutted road beds don't make the best drainage situations for trail use.
Nice review. I'm gonna get one. I have 5 Paka sweaters, a base layer shirt, and socks, and I love them all. Plus, I really appreciate their mission and transparency, employing people at the source, where the alpacas are in Peru. They pay above market wages, provide schooling and college scholarships, etc. I appreciate that each of my sweaters is signed by the actual person who knitted it, and that now each product can be traced back to the exact farm where the alpaca fur was collected. They are constantly upgrading their products with higher percentages of alpaca and merino, and lower amounts of recycled poly. They do have lines that are 100% poly-free. I don't backpack so I don't need it to compress or be featherweight, will just use for alpine skiing and chilly days.
Mine is a medium and all three my sweaters are also medium. Has a good athletic fit. Please remember it is over $300. I had to save up for it instead of buying a new Garmin mini.
@@WorldviewOutdoors Thanks for that. My sweaters are all XL, but the fit guide wants to put me in XXL for the puffer. I assumed that was for layering? But maybe I need to check that again. If it's as warm as people say, the layering can decrease. 😃 It is on sale right now (Feb 16, 2023) for $299. Plus, with each purchase they send a $20 coupon, so it will be $279 for me. That seems to actually be on the lower price range for puffers using synthetic or down fill.
