In the parallel entry, i see you dialed in the OBS for your 079 inbound course when flying 259 outbound when first joining entering the hold, causing reverse sensing. I've seen the parallel entry drawn with the initial path parallel and offset toward the non-holding side of the racetrack before, which is how your flew it as well. A couple questions: Is there any reason not to dial in 259 on your OBS when first joining, so you can start to get an idea about wind correction? I usually try to fly my parallel entries directly over the inbound course of the hold, is there any reason not to do that? Anyways, I just passed my IR checkride last week after using the flight insight ground school. It was great, really set me up for success! A lot of this style sim work helped me understand the maneuvers better and it was something I could recreate with a home sim set up, which also helped me show up to my lessons more prepared for what to expect.
Good video! My only minor nitpick would be that the FAA strongly recommends leaving your landing light on at all times below 10,000 feet for visibility, so it would be best to leave the landing light on at 11:19 despite what the checklist saying to turn it off. I get that this is a sim, so it won't decrease your chances of a mid-air, but in real life, it's a good practice to be as visible as possible. The cost of a landing light is less than a funeral!
I'm very confused by that direct entry. From what I saw, you came in from the west, intercepted the holding fix, then continued toward the airport. If this wasn't a hold, then flying past the fix is correct. But then the plane circled 180 degrees and came back passed the fix and headed parallel outbound again and then turned back inbound to intercept the inbound course. Very confusing. Could someone explain what I just saw? 😅😅
There was more to it than that. It looks like you didn't start timing the outbound leg until the flag flipped, is that so? Otherwise, how do you time the leg sufficiently when you actually complete the turn way to the East of the VORTAC point rather than parallels to it.
It’s ForeFlight. He’s got the approach plate for the VOR Rwy 8 at KPDT up, and using an app like FlightEvents to show position data that’s being broadcast from the sim. Great training tools.
If you need to adjust SR and GR between the Satellites and the Ground, how do you compensate for the airplanes flying above at the height of 10 km and at the speed of 1,000 km/h? How about north pole vs equator? Don't the earth spin at the equator at 1,700 km/h, while the poles are standing still? Does GPS compensate clock rate for them too?
How do you log AATD time? My CFIs are confusing me. They’re logging it differently. Should I put that as flight training received or ground training received?
Nice, 27L at my home airport of Melbourne! 27L happens to have the only back course approach in Florida, maybe even the entire southeast US. Always learn something in these videos, thanks!
Question: you mention that for the Telluride approach conducted under Cat C or D would enter a circling pattern to lose altitude more gradually but the plate shows "NA" for Cat C and D. Doesn't this mean that circling approaches are not authorized for Cat C and D? There's some very close terrain north and east of the airport (inside of 3 miles) so circling to land runway 27 would be very risky at a high airspeed. Help me understand what you meant by "enter a circling pattern to lose altitude more gradually" for the VOR/DME-A at KTEX

Great videos thank you for posting. To anyone, @ 6:12 we were to turn right to get back on course with the out bound 270 radial so I thought the aircraft was in the top left quadrant but the aircraft turned left putting it in the bottom left. What am i not understanding please? (IFR Student)
Interesting. I’m pretty sure I learned about protected / unprotected from the King’s course. I always suspected some margin was built in, but this shows that a good amount of margin is built in.
Watching this it occured to me that both the steam and digital ASI could be updated to have a dynamic green arc the bottom of which is always stall speed regardless of whatever that speed might be for the configuration of the plane.
