Yeah it popped because you slowed the flow by opening the flow neck. There is a good flow rate and this is a good and simple design, the comments are on about a lack of an arrestor but the arrestor was implemented and still didn't prevent the flashback because Hydrogen gas burns faster and hotter than Acetylene designs account for. The flame has to be extinguished before turning off the torch either by locking the nozzle completely or dabbing the flame out. Trying to extend the flame with this flow rate is what caused the flashback. The reaction for H₂O produces blackbody radiation in ultraviolet where carbon and metals release visible light. The way we see Hydrogen flames are through the blackbody heat of atmosphere gas (N₂/O₂/CO₂) or the blackbody heat of whatever is being heated like the nozzle or the work piece. HHO torches on the internet that have long visible flames are normally accelerated with an inert gas like CO₂/N₂/Ar as they are used in plasma torches and Acetylene torches to extend the arc or flame while keeping ratio. Otherwise a hydrogen flame is invisible to our eyes and naturally without that knowledge anybody's first thought would be to allow more gas to see the "flame" and that slowed the output for the torch, that is ultimately what I think caused the flashback.
