For people in need of a kidney or liver transplant, living organ donation may offer a shorter pathway to better health - providing faster access to a transplant and quicker recovery. But there are not enough living donors to meet the need.

The Centre for Living Organ Donation was created by the Ajmera Transplant Centre in 2018 to improve access to living organ donation for people who need a life-saving kidney or liver transplant, those who want to give a transformative gift of life and everyone who wants to be part of their future.

One of the world’s first, the Centre for Living Organ Donation raises awareness, provides care, promotes research and offers hope for thousands of Canadians who are waiting for a kidney or liver transplant.

We are located at University Health Network's Toronto General Hospital, one of the World's Best Hospitals according to Newsweek.

The Centre for Living Organ Donation is funded by the UHN Foundation.

This video is amazing. I have big concerns with how I can communicate all of this to my partner and so it's comforting to hear that others can and have faced the same problem before. I would love to see a video from the perspective of a donor's partner. Something for my partner to see to reassure her would go a long way.

How much the cost of that live for donation
@givelifeuhn

There is no cost in Canada, all living donations are done altruistically. It is against the law in Canada to provide payment. Thanks

How many people have a history of liver failure/injury with oseltamivir (Tamiflu)? Especially since it doesn't seem to cause jaundice? I don't believe it as as "rare" as is reported on the Livertox website. There seems to be a collective aversion within the medical community to attribute liver injury to this nearaminidase inhibitor, which needs to be reevaluated. There have been cases of acute DILI liver failure up to around a month of a typical 5-day treatment for flu. The long-term effects of thus antiviral drug administration would be a great topic for discussion, as there is little to no information available to the public about the long-term effects of DILI. I think we will have to see many, many more of these before the resistance to liver injury from specifically Tamiflu is recognized. The studies with rat's and Tamiflu are pretty clear, however. Liver and kidney damage from Tamiflu has been well documented, yet sadly, actively ignored in the medical community. This needs to change. Even Google, on a cursory search, will tell you that "no liver injury has occurred from tamiflu." And "Experts says the benefits of Tamiflu outweighs the risks," yet fails to tell us what "experts." The nausea and vomiting caused byTamiflu, as well as some psychosis, must not be ignored symptoms, not even weeks after treatment with Tamiflu. Every healthcare provider needs to become familiar with the toxicity of Tamiflu, and must not simply give it out like candy to seniors, especially not to those in care homes. Here's a good place to start. The black box warnings need to include liver & kidney toxicity warnings. Please read this & there are many more... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8787452/

I don't get it. "I choose life" - I suppose that means "I choose to go ahead and get a liver transplant". I can't imagine there are people needing a liver transplant and choosing not to get one.

this talk as so many strongly downplays the risks. The donors remaining kidney is being pressurized by the entire blood flow which once passed 2 kidneys. Therefore it gets bloated, podocytes wear and the slit membranes open wider and let more urine but also proteine pass. That is the "increase" in function, which is more of an exaggerated work mode which results in accelerated wear. Once the donor falls sick with almost any kind of desease e.g. Cancer, Alzheimers or Parkinson's, the medical treatment often is toxic to the kidneys. Now the donor has less renal mass to loose and the toxic agent flows through one kidney only, i.e. at twice the concentration, which will quickly raise the question if the desease or the treatment is more detrimental to the patient. Living donations have the advantage, that doctors can plan and prepare for the transplantation and that enables the transplantation of non compatible organs as there is time to suppress the recipients immune system with B-cell depleting medicine (Rituximab) and remove antibodies by plasmapheresis. While this may succeed, there is significant risk early in the procedure, where the recipient may loose the organ or even their life.

What contraceptions did you use the first year of your kidney transplant? I don’t like the idea of an iud with progesterone, but I’ve been told it’s very little progesterone even less than the pill…

Im a 68 year old Aussie living in the USoNA, just started this process for my neighbours daughter who needs a kidney.Frustrating at times, i just want to help and get on with this, but they have so much pre screening to go through, gunna have to go give blood just to get my blood group, bloody medicare won't pay for it, says its elective! But for me, this is just the right thing to do, simple! I actually will be disappointed if not a suitable donor, even OK with the donor swapping, to me, if you can help then why the bloody hell wouldn't you? Pretty simple decision for me, my neighbours and i have had some very oprn and honest discussions, so no pressure, just scared of telling my whacko sister!!!😅

Everything otc meds or medication from doctors all have to pass through your liver. So it's best to not take any meds at all. If possible. I am not a doctor. I am speaking from being over-medicated. Big Pharma is the #1 killer with man made chems. A bug f U to big pharma.

Hi Susie - we know of several UHN team members, including the director of the UHN Living Kidney Donor program, Dr. Bob Richardson, who became an anonymous kidney donor after retirement. You can view his story here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2xTNhINhJIc.html

I'm not in the medical field and will become an "altruistic donor".... I'm in the process of all the testing. It's the gift of life.... my heart feels full when I think of it. I only need one kidney. If something happens and I need a kidney in the future,, I will move to the top of the transplant list....but that is rare. In the interim, I can save a life. I could keep two kidneys...incase I need a spare....but the probability is very low. Even so.....I will have a great medical team to assist me as a former donor.

Hi Candice and Kate, thank you for your video. I had a transplant 3 years ago. And last year I decided to give pregnancy a go after everything had stabilized. I had a really smooth journey, no complications at all. A C section was scheduled at 38 weeks, but at 34 weeks plus 5 days my baby’s heart just stopped after I have just been told the previous day during a check up that my baby was healthy and big. It’s been a month since I gave birth to him and I’m still in shock and deeply devastated. My doctor mentioned that due to my transplant I’m at higher risk of stillbirth which leaves me with very little hope
