Let’s look at this Portnoy is in a drum clinic and Mini is at a concert with Mike and everything else hooked up to the Sandman. They’re both amazing drummers. tremendously, but Mike Portnoy is creative his drumming doesn’t sound so mechanical almost like a drum machine. I believe with Portnoy drumming he helps tell the story of what’s being played. You feel the music when he plays with Mangini feels a little cold, almost like a marching band.
Used to cover “ Transmission” with a band. At the end of the song, the drum kit would be soaked by drummer sweat, and our poor drummer would be hyperventilating on the chair trying to catch his breath totally soaked. Those 16ths are rough. 8:16
I’m a drummer who sings, but if I have to choose one for my band it’s Jeff. He’s grooved just a bit more into pocket. Evidently he never wanted to solo all he wanted was to stay in the rhythm with great chops too
I was so fortunate to see him with Zappa on the first Zoot tour in Chicago and later with the missing persons in Chicago as well. The bass player is a super fan. Don't get me started on UK.
I miss Dom. He was a real life angel. I was fortunate enough to have had some 1 on 1 “lessons” we would just be talking drums in a friend’s academy and we would sit at some drums in the one room and it was line 2 friends having a drink talking shop but our couch was 2 sets and talk would lead to tips and coaching. So giving, grounded and he knew how lucky he was to be able to live that life.
Selway is a human metronome. The only reason he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves is that he deliberately stays out of the limelight, like Radiohead in general. A true innovator, who dovetails well with Thom and Jonnys sometimes wacky ideas! An unsung hero. 👍
Miles Davis was the right guy, at the right time, and at the right place to take jazz into the future. His work with Williams, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, Dave Holland, Herbie Hancock, Teo Macero etc etc etc is incredible.
Any Theodore fans that never listened to Golden are SERIOUSLY missing out. It's his best work besides what he did in TMV, not to put down his contributions to QOTSA, but in Golden there's much more experimentation and diversity of musical styles.
