I see you use the Saxholder...is it comfortable to play with him when you play with the tenor in one side? I heard that in that cases saxholder tends to slide over the shoulder...thanks in advance!! I played the alto but recently I changed to tenor and I looooove too much!!, love low range like you...the only problem is that I have a C6-C6 cervical hernia and I need something to hold the sax over the shoulders and not in the neck
Hey Gavin, I recall that in your saxophone misconceptions video you mention something about moving your jaw as you ascend higher up the register of the horn. After watching some pros, I noticed that a lot of them are moving their bottom lip all over the place while playing, specifically pushing their lip out while playing higher notes and pulling it in on the lower notes. I've tried experimenting with this by myself but I haven't found any success. I think my lower lip gets caught on the reed or something and I dont know if this because I have too much tension in my embouchure. I was wondering if you could make a video on this, Thanks.
Few clarifications - 1) you said your reeds are always in water. You mean always like always? Like... some of them have been in there for days, weeks? Like 24/7 soaking? 2) you said in a gig you'll toss your entire mouthpiece in the water on breaks - is that because you don't want to fiddle with reed placement you're happy with, or is there another reason water in the mouthpiece would be advantageous? Thanks! I didn't even realize breaking in reeds was a thing.
Hey, I used to do what you do with the water and stuff, NO. You should try breaking in like 3 of the reeds in a box if you can buy one early, and don't leave them soaking in water. It gets em playing immediately a lot better but it ain't it in the long run at all. Also, professionals typically cycle reeds (anywhere from 2 to 15 I've seen) (but these are like, MAJOR college music majors all the way to the air force band & clarinet quartet for example.) so I don't really agree with the "getting used to the reed" you really are breaking in the reed :/ I do like your videos tho!
Totally there’s many ways to go about it! I’ve done the reed cycle thing and it didn’t work for me but that is probably a great option for most people! Thanks for watching!
I can see this as the intro for the on-site news show broadcasted for the workers so they know what a ‘good job’ they’re doing and how there’s ‘only 17 more hours until lunch break!’ and to remind them how wonderful their lives are.
Hey Gavin, Recently I purchased “Patterns for Jazz” (partly due to your recommendation) and I was wondering what some of you favorite/most useful in this book are
