When I ran this, a friend got stuck on that rock and we hung out for a while as he extracted himself. We had lower water, so the rocks weremore in play.
Many years ago there was a book listing Big Mallard as one of the 10 worst rapids either in the USA or the world, I forget which. I used to float and jet boat through it on a pretty regular basis. We used to tell the customers wild stories about our encounters with the Big Duck! There I was just me and the Big Duck! What a time it was. If anyone can find that book let me know! Love to embarrass the author who apparently never actually went through Mallard or anywhere where the rapids will really kick your ass.
we just did this at about 8000 cfs, the rocks on the right are almost completely buried and the line on that side is terrifying. Luckily, the current would rather pull you straight into the sheer wall.
A perpetual debate amongst north end boaters! I use the Sauk (lower) gauge because it corresponds to the Bennett book (the most common guide for the area), and what most boaters understanding of flows are for the run. The Whitechuck has about the same margin of error as the Sauk gauge only reading lower because it is above the Whitechuck confluence, and the Darrington gauge is still unknown to a lot of area boaters.
