THE KIDS Lili “Help us, Oh please help us” the words called softly from the well As I peered deeply down, a rattlesnake slid past An old abandoned homestead in West Virginia’s woods The calling ever frantic as it called me to my task I hauled the bucket from the depths and found the rope was good Some children playing round the farm perhaps they stumbled, fell. - As I went down the deep dark pit, the cries became a laugh What manner of children would see the mirth, imprisoned in a well? The bottom dry I lit a flame, the base all filled with bones A dark side shaft, the cries again, a passage down to Hell? I crawled into that foetid hole, the draught, rotten flesh the smell That muddy hole it dragged me down, the cries turned into moans. - I struggled back up to the base to find the rope was gone “Help us, help us” came the taunts, I found my flame was spent My ragged cry up to the light was answered by a voice “The kids have snared another one” the voice of ill portent “They’ll feast today into the weeks until there’s nought but bone Then they will wait until they sense another wanderer alone”. - As weeks passed into months I heard the bucket rattle “Help us, Oh please help us” I cried up to the light A wary face peered from above, the rope slowly ascended As she came down that blackened hole her day turned into night We couldn’t help but softly laugh, our open arms extended “Help us, Oh please help us”, she found the rope was gone Another feast, another life, another year, another dreadful plight. Blessed be.
