Using a beguiling blend of ancient instruments such as cittern, English border bagpipes and shawm as well as modern folk instruments such as guitar, flute and piano accordion, GreenMatthews breathe new life into material from hundreds of years ago, making it fresh, relevant and accessible for a modern audience.
Also known for their popular themed touring shows, Chris and Sophie have built an enviable reputation for combining incisive wit and humour with a genuine love for the English tradition. They have a particular passion for 18th-century ballads and dance tunes - several of which have been unearthed by Chris from various libraries around the country and which are now being performed again for the first time in two hundred years. They also perform original songs which draw on their wealth of historical research to paint a fascinating picture of individual lives and stories from England’s past.
Great talking to you at Kenilworth the other day. A question I have about this is how much of this music is extant writing and how much of it is your own arrangement?

I have no idea why the algorithm suggested this video to me, but I’m so glad it did - I love this! I smiled all the way through. A perfect reflection on 2020, performed exceptionally well!
Im not familiar with Renaissance instruments-does it have a pair of each string? So like its only four string types but they are doubled? Very cool video btw I had never thought about just leaving musical instruments around for entertainment.
There are 9 strings on this instrument, but they are arranged in 'courses' - twos and one set of three. Most fretted string instruments from this periods have their strings in courses, but all with different numbers of courses.
That's quite the collection of 'peeps' you've got hanging there on the wall behind you. Back in the 70s I was collecting all sorts of wind instruments, mostly Early Music capped reeds like Krummhorns, Cornemuses, and the like. I also got a lovely little set of Gaida Gallega from a company in Spain; it was really nerve wracking ordering sight unseen, with the language barrier, etc, but when they finally arrived they were fabulous. I also found an antique set of Highland pipes in a junk store, they were David Glen, Edinburgh if I recall correctly. I found an old piper who completely refurbished them for me, and boy were they loud compared to the Gaida, and took a lot more wind. My brother got himself a fancy set of Uilleann pipes, but he never learned how to play them. Anyway, that was a lifetime ago, and all the instruments have been sold off to people who used them more regularly. And one of my best buddies is a Bulgarian who is big into his Gaida pipes, and has got quite good at playing them over the past ten years. All I have left of wind instruments are three beautiful Gemshorns, two of which are made of exotic black 'serrated' Gazelle horn and are in the Alto or Tenor range (I don't recall offhand) and then a third soprano made of steer horn. I should really make a quick video demo of them for my channel, as most people have never even heard of the Gemshorn! Anyway, keep up the piping! Sounds really good! :) I figured I'd respond so as to 'massage the algorithm' for you! :)
For anyone interested in more music with this instrument, Spice and Wolf anime has a soundtrack song that's been done with Crumhorn. It's the song "Hamu" from the soundtrack. Here's its youtube link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jbsaZMG9w30.htmlsi=-mE4gakGzEUxJtja&t=2154. Great instrument with a unique sound!
