The nature of the creatures is explained more in the books, but the reason that wybie shows compassion, but IS still a puppet, is because he’s made with soul sand, and those souls are not evil, They’re just being controlled by an evil entity, so sometimes they might be able to fight back to save the living victims of the beldam. But they cant leave, they’d disintegrate into sand. In the books, that’s the reason the other father ends up getting melted, he didnt obey. I also think the reason the ghost kids can’t leave the room is simple ghost lore. There is a lot of ghost stories where the ghost can’t leave the place it died, sometimes being one area, one room, or sometimes even a specific chair or bed.
Anyone else notice the soul in the purple potion? After Lisa hands it to Madeline to drink a little man can be seen swirling around just before she drinks it she looks at her ring you can see him same seen just for a second.

I love this analysis. So. Good. Great even. I do think there is a queer understanding of this film. As a boy who never felt entirely masculine, always aware of a bit of my femininity, this film was one of my favorite films. Oddly, my (straight) brother who also introduced me to Sailor Moon, was the one who helped me find this classic masterpiece. I knew I would die from a young age, I think because I was bamboozled into thinking myself hated & despised due to Abrahamic religious beliefs. I knew I was queer / gay from young age, & othered. So Molly Grue, Schmendrick, & the unicorn are all dear to me because I felt them even before I fully understood why. As a young boy that felt damned & wanted to die at too early an age, this film was so impactful & had continued to hit me differently every time I’ve since watched it. Truly a masterpiece of animation, fiction, & comics. Thank you for this perspective. 💜
We already know the other mother feeds on love so what if the love coraline put into the thought of planting the seeds with her parents is exactly why she could turn the seeds into the garden and other father

Do you know what would be interesting? Like the Joker, what if Beetlejuice has many many origin stories? I know the one in the sequel, but it would be more interesting if Beetlejuice just kept dying and possessing bodies that all look the same. I mean in that Hot Ones parody he talks about knowing Caligula, infamous crazy Roman Emperor.
Because you said reverse narnia time it got me thinking,what if the other mother has awareness of how time is passed on both sides and didn’t rush downstairs for coraline because her parents followed in already, just leaving the door open with the key in it means the other mother could have came into her world or at very least shown her parents a reason to go in to her world, and for the sake of argument what if the house she’s in with the scene is her real home but it was redone by grandma after the disappearance of coraline because it’s not like wybie would be allowed to check on her and know if she and her family was missing

I have a similar theory to some others here but with a different outcome. I believe due to the multiple watches on his left arm, his salesman attitude and the way he carries himself, he was a conman who conned the wrong guy, probably back between 1948 and 1973 based on his clothes and speech patterns. Look at the sleeves of his pants, tucked into his tall boots as if he's going into water. Look at all the green in his hair and all over the back of his head and neck. It's not mold, it's MOSS. I believe Betelgeuse was a grifter who sold a bad watch to a mob boss and ended up being weighted down by his feet to the bottom of a riverbed, where his body attracted moss before he finally died. He legitimately looks like another drowning victim would look in his world.
I understood the tunnel looking different as the belldame no longer needing to make the tunnel enticing because the truth is out and with the parents being different at the end, I saw that as Coraline seeing life through a different lens and she now understands that it’s not all that bad

The original story was written by someone who straight up hated children, the original story is way more disturbing. The coachman is actually WORSE in the original tale, if you can believe that and the story does give an indication on what happens to the donkeys who can still speak. The coachman heavily abuses and even mutilates the donkeys that pull the coach. He's bitten the ears off some of them. In the book Pinocchio and Lampwick ride the donkeys themselves, not the coach. The one Pinocchio rides has it's ears bitten off and he can hear a crying voice warning him about the island. But he doesn't pay attention to the warning despite noticing the donkey he is riding is weeping. The novel Descendants: Isle of the Last Rush does show the Coachman was later caught and arrested by the authorities. He got banished to the Isle of Lost forever as a normal and miserable coachman. He was also forced to change all his victims back to humans, however the Descendants Universe is not canonical.
I literally said as a little girl that Coraline is my favorite movie because people are going to keep talking about it forever. It is so symbolic and mystical. You can come up with 1 million gazillion theories about it. And look at here I was right, no new Coraline content has come out since the movie, and people still make new videos about it to this day. 😂😂😂
Perhaps he was poisoned with something meant to kill insects, hence the name -- _Beetle Juice!_ Maybe he made a living exterminating insects and unwanted pests from people's homes. Thus in the afterlife he transitioned from freeing people's homes of insects to freeing the homes of ghosts by exterminating the living. Maybe he was dishonest though. After all, if he were to kill the Deets family, wouldn't they simply haunt the Maitlands' home along with the Maitlands forever? Maybe that dishonesty is what led to his death ... perhaps he was poisoned with his own products by a dissatisfied customer.
I love this, because this also explains Stephanie's relative lack of direction and goals. The average viewer could probably chalk it up to the show making her the new Jesse and Kimmy the new Joey, but you're pretty much nailing how Danny's parenting style and projected anxiety is impacting his millennial daughters.
I actually remember the episode where they kept the house super sloppy, and their mothers came in. The plot from what I recall was that Danny's mother would have stayed there if he didn't get his act together. I think it was that episode where he realized he could channel his grief and trauma into cleaning, and possibly tie some of his neurotic tendencies to his mother
Betalguise could have been sick and starved to death until his health failed him. He ate bugs in the movie remember. So it is possible he was around during the black plaque but was locked 🔒 in a dungeon for being a bad boy. He got sick the guards did not want to get near him to serve his food or purposely with held his food and he was forced to eat the bugs that crawled into his cell. Which was yummy to a dying man. I only recently finished watching the show. Yeah, the went off the deep end by the end. I thought the house symbols was Alva's rocket. I guess I blinked in the opening credits reveal. Why did the former high priestess want to die on the moon with Alva? Why did poor Jester get killed by Una? Why does Chaz get to control Steamland instead of a fate he deserved? No one could turn Merkimer back into a human? I was half-expecting the entire Disenchanment universe to be the worlds on Bender when he floated in space and talked to "God".
