Met many of the Putney painters at a Daniel Keys workshop in Connecticut…I was floored to have so many of them in the class….i couldn’t even paint I was so intimidated….but….they are just wonderful people and have a sense of helpfulness just like Richard. I’m sure he is in a better place still painting! Oh to have had a mentor like him!

I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Schmid in the elevator at the Portrait Society of America conference. I was in my 20s at the time and I was trying super hard not to fanboy out but I ended up saying "I'm sorry but I just have to tell you I love your work". To which he replied " You're an artist?" Then he proceeded to look at some of my work on my phone and give me words of encouragement. He was so cool. A LOT taller than I expected too lol. I regret not being able to accept a mentorship due to distance. RIP to one of the greatest artists of our time and a wonderful mentor to many :)

Long winded compliment: Professional fine artist and only source of income since 1994 and seriously painting since 1979. I was immersed into nothing but watercolor, for over 20 years, picking up the styles of Wyeth, Winslow Homer, Philip Jamison, studying under Frederick Graff. Now years later and having conducted many, many workshops of my own, you would think it hard to teach an old dog new tricks.....wrong....enter Richard Schmid, whom I had never heard of, until about 17 years ago. Introduced by a friend, I bought Alla Prima and cracked open the oils. Richard had a great gift that he was determined to be passed on to others. He never knew it but I was one of the others. My teacher Frederick Graff had the same attitude as Richard and it has fallen on me as well, "Give everything you know, hold nothing back and give every artist the utmost respect." Thanks Richard, my name is Barry R Jeter and I'm still painting and yeh, I use a lot of your techniques!!! PS to artists: If you ever think your painting is getting a little to tight, crack open one of Richards books and learn how to loosen that passage up!

haha you can try :D he was brilliant with how "tight" he was with his seemingly loose brushwork. The only other ones I can think of like it are Sargeant, Zorn and maybe Raeburn :D
