I suffered 3 strokes from COVID and I have brokas aphasia just like him, but I slur with words, yet when I talk slowly which I'm doing right now voice to texting I perfectly but once I speed things up normal pace I start to break up and my thoughts go right out the door. and I cannot speak it gets very hard. And he suggestions? I know you will say speak slowly but I sound kind of mentally challenged.

i have Broca's Aphasia from a brain tumor 9 years ago. It really affects your life, both socially and professionally. I've had many job interviews that I completely butchered because it took me forever to find the right words. I had to switch careers from finance to editing (photo/video) which is more peaceful and i don't have to talk too much

interesting how he was slightly more fluent when explaining what aphasia is. could that be because he has explained it many times before?

This was amazing to see and really encouraging to me bc my husband speaks the same way he does and I always want to finish his sentences but he his guy’s wife is very patient and just waits for him. Wow I really need to do that. And I love how he has found a new purpose. My husband hasn’t yet. He was a middle school teacher and a Sunday school teacher and that’s all he knew. I need to help him find another avenue to help him feel like a productive citizen.

Man, I had a TBI at 20… this is exactly how I talked. I could write and read just fine. I felt everyone understood me… my thoughts were there… however… when someone showed me a video of how I spoke… it didn’t align. That was so frustrating. I got mad. I got very angry. It was recommended that I was to drop out of college. However, I stuck it out and took an easy semester. I had good friends that took me to all of our regular locations. After 6 months, I was back to a new normal. 10 years later… I still second guess what I’ve said. That is gold. If you’re struggling with this… you’ve got this. I look back and think what a colorful why I described my world.

My physiology professor showed us this video and it quite honestly made me sad. I mean, listen to the guy- he's hardly making any sense, yet he sounds so happy, like he's just living his best life. Imagining living like this, unaware that you're making very little sense yet being so happy... I don't know, it just makes me kind of sad.

Ive talked like this under a great influence of LSD. chopped up poetry talk because of the neurons firing every and each wrong way. Im 31 now, and did a lot of LSD... Well not a lot, but would randomly do heroic doses of like 2-6 tabs at once about twice a week on and off for about the span of a half year. Which kinda is a lot at once. Obviously i wouldn't reccomend doing that, but ever since then i learned so much in such great ways, but also became a hardcore opiate junkie for half the rest of my life after, because of my confident ego after so many ego deaths back then which is ironic hahaha. Anyway, ill never forget when i couldn't speak straight, and my mantra was to the tune of let it be because my friend wouldn't leave his phone alone after having it on the charger at near dead battery. They were tripping too, and i tried to make them avoid playing on the phone and freaking out past the jungle of pixels by singing "let it charge, let it barge. Homer simpson lisa marge" Yeah idk. Im a nut case. But ill never forget sounding like this guy while tripping.

It’s cool that even though his ability to pick out the words he wants is diminished, his brain still seems to recall conversational structure and tone so that when someone says “Thank you” to him and ends the conversation, he still can immediately reply with “thanks, I appreciate that” because he still recalls fundamental aspects of conversation

He speaks exactly like a non-native English speaker only without the native language accent. Imagine him speaking with a heavy spanish accent, or french, and it you begin to understand what the brain needs to do to get through this. He basically needs to learn to speak a new language, and develop the nuro pathways to circumnavigate the ones that were damaged by his stroke. That is exactly what it is like to learn a foreign language later in life. We need to find and exercise new pathways in our brain, and the more we use them by practicing that new language, the more fluent we become.

This is beautiful. He communicates very well. This short vid reminded me when Charles Winchester from MASH got a recording from his sister who had a stutter as before he reprimanded a Soldier for bullying another who was speech impaired. The tone of your words speak for your heart.

Thank you Mike!!!!! I work with people that have had strokes, and this is a good example of how in Broca’s aphasia communication ability can depend on the LISTENER as well. Give people with Broca’s time to talk, tune into what they are saying verbally and nonverbally, and check back with them for understanding. His wife is a great help because she’s not speaking for him but helping clarify important points in what is being said or helping with a word someone gets close to but not quite. It can help people with Broca’s work on confidence in speaking because some people will be too anxious or self-conscious to try to talk with other people…and feeling that way when trying to speak with Broca’s usually makes the speaking WORSE for the person trying to speak. Think about this to help out people like Mike you might meet!!!
