I had my dad's old C64 and a Nintendo NES as a kid, if a game was written well it would hand NES it's ass on a platter! I don't have my NES anymore but I still have my NTSC C64, it's a shame that European games run too fast on it but that's how we played them back then, running too fast :(
Arkanoid was amazing though, it's not timing specific, runs the same speed on a PAL or NTSC C64 and with a paddle controller it's...arcade perfect! Same with Arkanoid 2
And Europe got a very inferior version of Marble Madness for C64, the USA version was made by Atari and it is lovely, same with KLAX! This is why there's US and EU versions of both games.
