Looks like a strong wind would rip those new shingles right off. The starter shingles have no strong attachment to underneath. Why not just put in box vents low on the roof to add necessary intake ventilation?
Here in the great Northwest. If we did a skylight like that it would leak your steps shingles need to come down to your lamb and seal not on your nailing line. You're a bad all that you should have removed your stepsingle's and brought them down to the salvage line. Good luck.
Some reason people do that is because, -They don't have enough experience, -They follow instruction from the boss, lead guy, company. -They want to be back and charging more once the warranty expires. -They're not certified installer. Etc.
The point of the video is to show our potential customer how we do that kind of job. Particularly those who are in need of these repairs. A short video does not give the full context of the situation. Many homeowners are facing challenging upgrading their skylight and many contractors like us are upgrading videos showing different ways to install them. Greetings.
Yes. If you watch the related video, we were working under -5 degrees. The debris you're talking about are leaf that are frozen and removing it can cause damage to the shingles.
Hola amigo!! Gracias por tu comentario pero no hay ninguna necesidad de referirse así al trabajo honrado de uno. Quizás no le parezca la manera de instalar las tejas y por lo general no conocen el contexto del video pero esto es lo que hacemos para salir adelante. Saludos.
Handsplit shakes have been my favorite since I was a kid in our roofing family. Can't imagine busting out a nail gun for cedar, much less a few bundles. Then nailing tar paper with the gun?
Let me give you a context of the video. There were a brick chimney before, homeowner were told by the chimney contractor that the shake liner must be instale with nails I insisted to used staple but since the homeowner requested to use nails then I did. About the nail gun. I used the Hitachi staple gun to install the new cedar shake, back in the 80's roofer were using hot deep galvanized nails now our jurisdiction and local building code call to use staple.
I have one of our Project guys showing me this and i really like it. It's definitely a great idea and cost saving for the homeowner. The only thing I see as a concern is that how does this not compromise the shingle and vent for high winds ripping it off the roof? Is there a sealant or glue I'm not seeing? thanx
It looks cold as hell those shingles are never going to stick together in that cold ass weather , didn’t blow the roof off first 😶🌫️ looks like crap to me. Just saying I have 40 years in the roofing trade and we would never work in the frost and I work in Tahoe at 6350 elevation. You’ll be back after that shit blows right off again. Just like it did.
Yes. If was cold. If you watch the full video you'll see that the first thing we did was blowing off the loose debris, there were branches, leaves, broken shingles due to the tree damage. Both houses the next door and that one were damage by the tree and rain the following day. Take the time watching the video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7iarlYhSORo.html
Since the new substrate system is not staggered, and there is a patch in the substrate, I would have reinforced the rafters with 2x4 under the 1x4 edges ;). Good work.
Great observation but unfortunately is not building codes. I would install the plywood patch but as certified contractor we must follow the rules by removing a minimum 2'x4' of the existing damages plywood.
total chops to this fellow, whoever he is. He has tradecraft. its not his fault homeowner didn't properly shitcan the exhausted cedar shake roof and order a new one
Yes it’s called skip sheathing. Traditional shingle roofs used that practice where they used 1x4 or 1x6 and skip every other row. If you look he put the wood strips right where he will nail the shingles. And notice how he added the tar paper, how it’s staggered on the over lap at the ends so any water that gets through will run off onto the next row of shingles. Very nice repair job 👍
Space sheathing in my neck of the woods. And its never 1x4’s its usually 1x6 or 1x8. Never has spaces this wide either as if someone steps on those shakes after they dry or a branch falls there its gonna crack compared to rest of roof where sheathing is closer together.
