A comment was made concerning the use of a CPA, so, a note to Finance Officers. A Certified Public Accountant is required with public corporations having stock, which is not applicable for any Legion. A CPA may be used for non-profit accounting however, CPA's generally charge more than a Public Accountant, one holding a license to provide accounting services to the public. For non profit accounting you may find more PA's and some may specialize in non-profit accounting. Lastly, you may use a "Bookkeeping Service" this could be someone who has accounting experience, may be certified as a tax preparer and who may have a limited accounting education. Some of these services may provide payroll accounting as well. Check for the requirements pertaining to the accounting necessary by state law. Ensure that your accounting system complies with GAAP, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles regardless of any other requirements and you must make the books and records available to all members and in most cases to the public as well.
I'm a Past Commander for The Historic Fort Benjamin Harrison American Legion Post 510. I was elected 2018 and served for 3 years. Before I was elected the Past Commanders had failed to submit the 990 form and we lost our tax exempt status. Still working on getting it back. Up to this year we only had revue from Membership renewal; <$3,000 a year. This is a very good video and provides some insight on what we need to do.

Why does the American Legion air Fox news all open hours when Fox insults democrats every day. The American Legion purposely ignores that democrats are veterans also which is the reason they do nothing about it.
@@michiganlegion Thanks for responding. It is no secret that Amerian Legions and VFW's have Fox news on their TVs all open hours. I am a democrat veteran and the stuff that partisan station says abouyt democrats is horrible. Rupert Murdock has financial ties with Russia that go back decades and musch of the effort of Fox is to plat a patriot game yet destabilize the interior of this country. It is not hard fro me to listen to a Hannity, Carlson, Inghram or a Jeanine Pirro and point out their lies and exaggerations made about democrats which includes blatant name calling. How the American Legions and VFW's became republican propaganda machines is a mystery. i could write a book on how the veteran agencies were taken over by right wing media with many examples. One in particular was the glorification of Rush Limbaugh who spent his life knocking down blacks when they attempted to seek equal treatment from Jessie Jacking that he desecrated every day on his show up to Kaepernick where he parroted Trumps false claim that he was anti veteran and did not respect this country and all he was doing was trying to seek equal rights. Do you realize how many blacks are veterans yet you subject your veterans to that garbage. The american Legions that run to Trumps defense that other stations do the same is just an excuse to continue the republican cause because other stations report the new develpments and even have republicans on their shows to debate. Do you have any idea how many times shows on MSNBC and CNN asked target republicans to appear on their shows to debate, refused? Hannity, Carlson, Inghram and Pirro will not allow opposing viewpoints on their shows. Our group is 27 members and as we get noticed the numbers increase. We are asking that both veteran organizations apologize to veterans nationally and discontinue airing Russian Fox news and Russian Newsmax. When they do we will be more than happy to renew our memberships. Remember half your members are democrat veterans.
@@davidclark573 what post are you a member of or were a part of? Some information for you to consider. The American Legion does not charter clubrooms, we charter Posts that are made up of Veterans. Clubrooms or lounges are businesses local posts begin to raise revenue to support the programs they participate in and to help their local community. Not every Post has a club lounge. In Michigan, less than half of the Posts have a building not all of them have a clubroom or lounge. Each Post is autonomous, the Post membership determines their own set of rules in their clubrooms. Each Post has an executive committee or a house committee that sets the rules, functions, and manages the club area. I would encourage you to consider when elections for officers are coming up this year is to run for one of the positions and be a voice on that committee, any member in good standing may run for a position. Post members then vote on each position. Posts are like the elections in this country, a democratic process is done each year to determine the officers (i.e. representatives) who are charged with managing the affairs of the Post. Meetings are conducted using parliamentary procedures. I would encourage you to read the bylaws of your Post for more specifics. The second option is that you have 27 Veterans in your group. In Michigan, a group of at least 15 veterans may start an American Legion Post. You and your group could start your own local Post, go through a capital campaign to raise money and purchase, or build a building, apply for a club license and display TV's that show the channels the committee wishes. @@michiganlegion You are just doing what a prtisan Amerian Legion would do, deny the problem. In Pa nearly every American Legion and VFW rely on a bar for their revenue. The main Amerian Legion should set guide lines to not be a partisan veterans organization by airing anti democrat shows. PERIOD We will continue our effort to go national and your response will show how the American Legion is partisan to republican veterans by knowing how partisan their shows are on their TVs and will not make any changes.
@@davidclark573 The American Legion is a non-partisan organization, and what your comments suggest is that you want it to be partisan in your image and not in the local Posts image if you are saying that 50% of the Veterans are democrat and 50% are republican then your recommendation should be to turn all news stations off. The American Legion at the department (state) nor at the National level may dictate to a local Post what they display on their TV sets. If you want to try to change what goes on a TV set in a Post then I would again recommend getting involved in your local Post. If you want to pursue making a policy the department and the national organization will implement, then the process starts at the local post. You write a resolution, get it passed at your local post, get it passed at your district, then get it passed at the department, then work to get it passed at the national level.
