after a minute of lame computer voice narrating at me, I had to turn it off - get a real person to present info and you'll have my undivided attention :(
Shops get between 125 and 200 per hour yet they pay techs 21 to 30 dollars flat rate. Don’t forget the thousands of dollars of tools they have to purchase year after year.
The fact that cars are becoming rolling heaps of brittle computerized plastic cheesy garbage also makes them less satisfying to work on from the mechanic's point of view. There is a satisfaction in restoring a quality machine to health, that real mechanics understand.
How about we blame on RU-vid these days.. everything from the ground up tovthe seat all posted on RU-vid for profit. I can DIY my own fix by a sample search. I don't need autos hop. They charge me triple. Why go to them when I can do it myself for the cost of parts.
Been wearing this cologne called Gentlemen's Elixir and there's something about the scent that makes me feel more successful. Like when I put it on I kick into entrepreneurial mode.
This is a terrible career to get in to. Run as far away as you can from this trade. I have spent 13 years of my life in this prison. Overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated. I chose this path during the recession of 08 because, for one I was young and told it was recession proof. While true, but so is healthcare and many other jobs. Two: tricked by for profit university recruiters that I was going to be making 6 figures a few years out of school. 3, promised I would be able to support a family on the income alone. What a fucking joke. I should have just become a plumbers apprentice. Everybody clogs the fucking toilet and needs it fixed. I would literally rather handle peoples chipotle shits than work in this field.
Because drum brakes are so new technology ? To get the rear shoes replaced on a mid 1990s Ford Ranger cost 600 bucks. Got new drums and one new wheel cylinder and supposedly all new springs, star wheels, and self adjusters etc Drove home and the parking brake would not hold on a slight slope. Repair shop said they will work after used awhile They would not self adjust via stopping in reverse I took off the 2 rear drums and the "Expert brake Repair" left off the brand new automatic adjusters I paid for So you charge customers for new parts and save labor by not installing them The Right side adjuster would not spin correctly The "expert brake repair" guys installed two LEFT adjusting star wheels on the rear The parking brake only was stopping on one rear wheel Oh the "expert brake shop" left off the "H-dogbone" piece that is used on the parking brakes, So the gambit is charge for new parts and do not install them. Then charge the customer all the time to adjust the brakes. Confidence is getting something fixed properly is at an all time low. The other sides "H-dogbone" was there but not installed right; it was rubbing on the new brake drum and at a weird diagonal and just flopping around. I have done brakes jobs myself since the mid 1970's. I had the "local expert" do this repair since auto work is not my job. I am shocked at how many basic errors my recent brake repair was, and the price too. When I asked if he installed the auto self adjusters I never got a straight answer. So I tried braking in reverse and that did nothing. Then I said let me check what the actually did. My first guess was they left off the auto adjusters; some folks do that. The two LEFT star wheels is a blunder; the missing H dog bone piece and the loose one a total botched job
Mechanics should be able to have a lead and that lead should work as a service writer and over see a crew. Of 3-4. He knows whats best for the cars and what is recommended by the other techs. He gets better pay and get rid of a service writer
This is an easy fix. Teach the "mechanics" to do more than just replace parts. Plus, if you have a skill or trade, your paycheck should reflect it. $18/hr isn't justifiable for a mechanic with multiple certifications under their belt. The same can be said for everyone who has a trade. I believe everyone should go on strike for better wages. Even truckers are being short changed. Greed will destroy the economy faster than a communist.
Could you imagine doing General motors warranty work all day long on flat rate ? Hell, you would wind up owing the dealer money on Friday ,, It's true 😂😂
same here, but 2013. If you are a good mechanic, you can easily transition to another industry. I make quadruple what I did as a mechanic (and now don't have to deal with any bullshit like flat rate or tool expenses).
Hey industry, change how techs are paid first . Get rid of commission pay , do more to lower the cost of insurance coverage . Do more to help with cost of purchasing tools . Start with these , and next you have to change the time perception. Although this will be tough , having less stress to get the vehicle out the door as the priority will be an aid. I left the field - and am glad I did - right now the job sucks , gonna take a lot of work to change that
That because none of them know anything my car was just in the shop two week at a dealer and they can’t tell me what wrong with it and it cost me $700 to get it back
that's on the dealer bro, not the mechanics. Compensation for mechanics is so low, the intelligent ones left the industry (like myself). The amount of knowledge required to be a competent mechanic is immense, almost engineer-level. I left the shop to actually be an engineer. I make quadruple what I did as a mechanic and now I work from home. Really sad too, because I did enjoy repairing cars.
Retired after 49 years, cars no problem. Car owners problem. Manufacturers big problem. The next generation of technicians want too much for alot less knowledge of how it works. The golden age of technology is failed. Physical vs. Financial makes a week society. Walk a mile in my shoes, the average customer won't do it in there 300.00 shoes.
No other job do you have to spend hundreds of dollars to buy tools to have a job. If dealer want to get mechanics, pay them to buy tools. That would make them less greedy not going to happen. All the equipment manufacturers bitch and moan for mechanics yet under pay and not supplying tools. This is the fault of manufacturers putting 5 or more computers which makes easy to manufacturer but mechanics can't repair.
As a retired diesel mechanic every single word is totally true. They are making everything so high tech that mechanics and diesel mechanics cannot keep up for one. Two you have to spend 30,000 to 40,000 thousand of dollars or more to fix these vehicles. Third some vehicles cannot be worked on by your regular mechanic shop the vehicle can only be fixed by the dealer shop it self because there have specialized equipment that is made to only work on that vehicle. Mechanics shops do not have the software for these vehicles because car companies won’t let you buy them and if you did they would charge you a arm and a leg for the software for that vehicle it wouldn’t be cost effective for the mechanic shop it would put them out of business. Beware of what car you buy today some of them only be fixed at the dealer ship. I know one dealer ship you cannot even do a simple brake job on you need software to reset the brake system before and after you are done. And we all know how much dealerships charge an arm and a leg today.
They're not offered competitive salaries. Instead they're offered a commissioned percentage at a rate that's stuck in the past. Meanwhile the hourly billing rate has skyrocketed. In addition, tool expansion makes profitably very tough. Interesting field but discouraging for financial success.
cars lost their souls and way over teched to death - not like my muscle cars moved by nascar - we used to bust ass to be good in the 90s - today is a joke and overpriced repairs
Did collision repair and paint 40 years,,never worked with a computer to do the work,,, in retirement now barely having enough money for food,, my body is ruined,,can't find any good doctors in the USA to help me with my pain..
You are so correct, this type of work takes a toll on your health. At 56, I am in pain from mechanical work and want to give it up everyday but business is booming and hard to turn it down.
If you know how to work on cars or can fix your own car you should know it's not a trash job. I take it you never worked on a car? Maybe someday you should work on one and then let me know how easy it is before you say it's trash
@@ponchnunez6082 I have been a mechanic for 20 years. Working on your own vehicle as a hobby is ok. You don't have to rush the job, you have all the time in the world to research and diagnoses problems ext. but working in a shop on multiple vehicles a day that are not your own is a totally different story. Trash pay, poor workshop politics, stupid customer complaints, ridicules warranty repair times, insufficient training provided and other things you might not think about such as incorrect wiring diagram, lack of workshop manual information, Special workshop tools or diagnostic equipment not provided ext. So yes it is a trash trade to do full time and once again the pay is shit.
God that created everything, can make anything come true. Ask God to become successful: I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me? Jeremiah 32:27 “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” _Matthew 19:26 “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” _ John 14:13-17 “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” _ Matthew 17:20-21. "For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, 'Fear not, I am the one who helps you.” _ Isaiah 41:13
The shortage is the reason I was able to negotiate such a high flat rate pay. Aimed for the sky and got it. Now I’m so much more relaxed then any dealer I’ve ever worked.
Are you telling me I got duped by a 13 million view video and it doesn't work so I can't bypass a insignia android-powered laptop computer Google account oh I can't believe I've been duped by 13 million video this doesn't work
It just to be that it was expected that mechanics where only mechanics. In today's world dealers expect that in addition to doing mechanics, technicians are electrical engeneers, electronic engineers, and computer science wizards. Delears have no way to compensate for these skills. As long as the globalists keep on pushing for super sophisticated cars, pretty soon rocket scientists are going to be necessary to repair and service a car. I do not blame technicians for deserting the profession. Unfortunately, it affects us all who own a "Modern car".
The employers are causing the shortage. They raise the labor rates so thier revenue continues to grow. They fill thier pockets while draining the customers wallets and screwing the technicians. Customers pay for sub par work and longer wait times.
