Greetings from the 715, would love to see more videos about dovetails, have you built with this method? Would like to see you cutting some notches or something you have built.

when determining "D", would one include the live edges, or only the face (for logs that are milled inside and out but left natural on top and bottom)?

When you have a live edge on the top and bottom it gets a little more interesting. You will have a varying gap along the logs and of course varying depth "D". Typically you would use an average depth for the log and wherever you have the logs meeting in the gap you cut off the high points that are hitting each other between the logs. Run the chain saw along the gap to cut the high points off until the dovetails meet tightly. Support the ends as you cut the high points off to avoid binding of the chainsaw. The two logs will slowly come together as you decrease the gap by cutting off the high points. You will end up with some varying gaps and flat areas between the logs. Of course if you want to avoid any cutting of the high points you would use the largest depth to calculate the notch dimensions. Kind of depends on the gap you will tolerate.

@@troyklinglesmith1571 Thank you. I did a lot of research on the web and didn't find anything simple and clear so I did my own video. Rank amateur. If you have some woodworking skill you could make a jig to help cut consistently and accurately. There are also jigs for sale on the web. You can take a look at some of the jigs and see if you want to try making one.

@@diamondback142 The Bearded Carpenter has a video series on YT that explains exactly what you just taught. I get a little confused at times but he is a great instructor/teacher. Thanks for the video but I don't understand how you can just randomly divide 5 by something, not in equal halves. 2 and 1/2 inches.
