Old Records with rosewood is the best for quality and price for me.

Lol for the both they are beech handle and totes, there is not rose wood. the beech was stained and varnished. record in my knoledge never make rosewood handle on theire plane, and for stanley they are only early 1900's "sweet-heart" area made in USA that they had rose wood . poor wood ID knowledge of this guy, but it make me happy because a good stains and varnish can lure people, even woodworker lol ! my secret for a rose wood stain is KMnO4 solutions. with a coat of varnish it s look like very realistic rosewood colour. KMnO4 decompose on contact of organic mater, in nice brown MnO2 and in some case oxidize some tanins that add becautiful light purple touch.

I believe both Stanley (UK) and Record made their planes using Rosewood knobs & totes before WW2 then Beech from then on, Stanley used plastic furniture from sometime in the seventy's not sure about Record though, Stanley (US) stopped making planes in 1967 the last being the type 20. The sweetheart planes were produced from around 1910 to around the 1930s types 10 to 15.

I've found Record planes always better than the similarly aged Stanleys when it comes to ergonomics and cuts. Stanley's does do a bit better on weight distribution. It maybe just me, but all the records I have have thicker soles, thus me thinking why they work better for my hands (I tend to push from the rear handle a lot more). They certainly feel different.
@MintStiles
@MintStiles Год назад
No3 are great for smaller work as an optimized block plane. I have no idea why people dont carry this instead of a block plane. This is ergonomically superior. Heavier? sure, but much more useful.

You have a Wartime Stanley No.4. Made during World War 2. Since brass was a premium material used for shell casings during the war, Stanley substituted a rubber wheel instead of a brass wheel.

That's one of the worst eras of Stanley planes to compare to any other planes. They only had the bakelite depth adjusters for a very short time. They made steel ones for little bit as well. Otherwise, they always had 100% brass adjusters. It seemed like your mind was made up before you even "reviewed" the two of them. 🤔

The shavings are showing what we call powdering, normally caused by lack of razor sharpness, but can be due to not a fine enough set, the final taps need to be as if you were hitting a dog on the nose😆😆♥️♥️♥️

This plane is for the flat of the board. Finish smoothing. So cutting on the edge is not what it is best used for. All the same, nice unpacking with good closeups, descriptions and demo.

It would be hard to come up with an easier test for a plane than edge planing clear pine. You could have at least gone at the end grain for a bit of a challenge. It does look like a good quality tool though, thanks for the video. 👍

You have to sharpen and set these up to do a worth while comparison or all you've established is how well the previous owner looked after them. In addition I have never seen a Stanley number 4 with a plastic adjuster, when you hold the rear tote your index finger should sit off the handle down the side of the blade to aid control you will find it a lot more comfortable. Paul Sellers has a very good video showing restoration, set up and sharpening.

This was a bit unfair. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a trade quality Stanley plane that had a plastic adjustment knob. Sure, the Record is good but I suspect they are from different product lines. One is trade quality and the other looks more aimed at the home user.

Most of the Records are made better than stanley either US or UK made ones, better castings.
@thethirdman225
@thethirdman225 4 года назад
williamn01 I have looked at both and as long as they are both from the same production tiers, I can see no difference. Sure, I like the Records too but there’s no appreciable difference between them, as long as you’re comparing like with like. Better casting? I can’t see any difference. And they weigh the same. I’ve checked.
@williamn01
@williamn01 4 года назад
@@thethirdman225 Yes I've always found the castings to be better, more uniformed and in my cases have felt a bit more beefier, I'm going with productions lines within the same 10 - 15 years. Also frogs have more of a contact surface aswell.

Might be a ww2 era record. During the war there were shortages of various metals that were in short supply. Record had to ditch the nickel plating for the war effort. If you give the lateral adjuster a clean it may well have the words 'war finish' engraved on it , which will date it fairly accurately.

I love Preston wooden planes, I always look out for them. I have gorgeous 18” plane, sold as a Jack but definitely on the longer side. A bullnose gets into the corners where a shoulder plane doesn’t, a #78 does both. It’s is very pretty plane, and though I like all my tools to bring something extra to my workflow I'd be more than happy with one like yours on my shelf. Another wonderful video, and you have a great collection. You should have far more subscribers.

Totally green with envy! Truly a thing of beauty and yours looks in excellent condition. It looks like tools are a lot more expensive in Ireland than the U.K. The last complete #45 I saw at a car boot with four boxes of blades was £180, and I walked away because he wouldn't accept £150. Even on eBay, where the prices are all over inflated, the auctions are all under £75 at the moment and there’s several 'buy it now' with blades for under £140 including P&P. It might be worth you looking at the U.K. eBay when buying tools, it could save you a fortune. Another great video, well done.

Personally I prefer using my #78 and my skewmouth much more than my electric routers. I feel more in control, especially with nowty wood which if an electric router gets hold of it can do some pretty serious damage. I also just like using planes, spokeshaves, chisel and scrapers. I’m not sure how much the box adds to the value, and they can add a lot, but my #78 was £7. I’m not a collector for collecting sake, same with my analogue cameras. I buy things I like to use and mine has gone with all my other planes. I accept there are people out there who like to keep things in pristine condition, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Perhaps we need those people to counterbalance my treatment of tools, though I do keep them in the best working condition. I might feel different when I find a pristine #55 with a full set of irons for £10. A very enjoyable video, subscribed. I’ve just looked and it looks like you stopped making videos a few months ago. Don’t give up, we need young people like yourself, especially this side of the Atlantic. The Americans seem much more supportive of young talent than the British or Irish (I can say that as I have a foot in both camps). Keep going, the numbers will come.

comparisons without sharpening and tuning first are worthless. Also, you should know that the reason you can't fit your hand in is that you're supposed to use a 3 fingered grip with the index finger pointing forward & resting on the frog.
