“Do not be frightened or bewildered by the luminous, brilliant, very sharp and clear light of supreme wisdom.” - Bardo Thodol (བར་དོ་ཐོས་གྲོལ) (Tibetan Book of the Dead)

As a kid, I listened to this song over and over again, just so that I could eventually sing along. Then I actually _listened_ to the words. And that's how I learned the concept of bases. [And yes, Base 8 would make *perfect* sense for a four-fingered species! Base 10 for them would be like hexadecimal for us.]
There should be a compass on the front cover of Tom Lehrer's first album: My Home Town in the center, I Wanna Go Back to Dixie to the south, Fight Fiercely Harvard to the east, The Hunting Song to the north, and The Wild West is Where I Wanna Be to the west. Then a distant arrow pointing northeast to the Irish Ballad and Lobachevsky.
This man is an absolute genius! These songs were written when I was ten...I'm heading for 70... I can't think of any comedy performances that would be so current after all these... And oh, the piano! If he'd only produced this sparkle of genius he would be a legend... but there are the lyrics and the performance, just stunningly brilliant!
The “new math” was taught by teachers trained in the old math. They did not understand what they were teaching and were responsible for an entire generation of American children being unable to do the simplest calculations throughout their lives.
It's very helpful to learn this way for then learning binary and hexadecimal which are staples of computing, although the latter is more useful day to day.
Honestly I wonder how masochism even came into existence like someone was just having sex with someone and then and one of them accidentally hurt the other and the other was just like "oh wait I enjoy this"
They just don't make 'so like that any more! Can you think of any contemporary offerings that would still admire over 40 years later and still be funny!
I was taught with the new math example.Way more informative and simple than old math. Not from the US btw.The carrying and borrowing was really simple to understand.
My dentist in the 90s actually complained that her work puts her at risk for AIDS. It's astonishing to hear dentists in particular mentioned in a pre-AIDS song like this.
