Sorry, one more thing. Estimating the drill sergeants' age is 33, they're now 71--or dead; the soldiers are long-ago retired.

"You are all here 'cause you didn't test well enough to be in the US Air Force! Your life is now about regret and sorrow. Oh, yeah. On behalf of your new leadership, you are now embarking on a three year nightmare! Fu*k you!" Well, that's the welcoming speech I would have given them.

I went through in 91. They sure got more time to eat. We had 5 minutes. WE also had new DIs every 2 weeks even in AIT

B 3-4 January 1984 and it was nothing like this. Drill Sergeants and troops smiling, looking around and talking in the mess hall. I guess I'm now "that old guy" but I'd do it again for sure. I remember the tree being in front of the door at the gas chamber upon exiting? This place really prepared for my first duty station in Wildflecken Germany for 2 years and then to Ft. Devens Mass. SFC Kenneth Olsen created the largest impact on a 17 year old kid in 8 short weeks

What don’t show that big oak tree right outside the exit of the CS chamber? Everyone came running out and smacked into that tree while the DIs laughed their ass off!! Wish I could do it all over again ! Love it and miss my bros that I met from all over the country ! Peace !

I did Basic at FLW in 2014 (2-10 Alpha Co 3rd Plt). Kinda nice to see what life was before I got there. I remember nearly everything from the USO, bowling alley, main PX and Commissary. The ww2 barracks was definitely an experience as when I got there in March, it was freezing at night. Then I stayed for OSUT with the Chemical Corp (74D) Good freaking times man

Arrived at Fort Leonard Wood from serving with the 193rd Infantry Brigade in the Panama Canal Zone. Was assigned to the 2nd Brigade (OSUT) from 1979 to 1981, then PCS to the 2rd Infantry Division in South Korea. Returned to my old unit for another tour of duty until 1984. Good duty for soldiers with families, quality of life was excellent.

Well now this is a interesting video and brings back some memories for sure. I was drafted in 1968 during the Vietnam conflict and sent to fort Leonard Wood for basic from there I went to fort ord California for AIT and then to Vietnam attached with the 25th infantry division. Fort Leonard Wood was a lot different training there in 1968 and the drill sergeants we're not very nice. I'll just leave it at that and you can use your own imagination.

I was drafted into the Army in 1968 during the Vietnam war. I was sent to Ft. Leonard Wood for basic, NOBODY failed basic training during that period, the Drill Sergeants “fixed” it so everyone graduated basic training. Uncle Sam needed body counts in the ‘Nam!

I like this video, but the DS were very different from the ones I had at Ft Sill in 1983. There was quite a bit of yelling, name calling (Maggot, Margot, etc...). I guess the vidoe was made to encourage people to join.

I was there from Nov. 1972 to April 1973 when I left for Korea where I spent the next 31 months. I was in Charlie 1-3. One third were Ohio National Guard, one third Minn. National Guard and the rest were those who joined and some were draftees like me. Haircut took 50 seconds. It was cold there. Two of our company died of pneumonia. They closed the base for Christmas. I spent my time home recovering from pneumonia. Drill Sergeants Bey and Birdsong were the best in the company and I was so glad I had them. In night fire my target light was out and I never saw the target and flunked. My drill sergeant straddled my back while I was in the prone position and shined a flashlight downrange so I could see the target to hit it to pass. I did not want to be a cook, armorer or motor pool so I signed up for an extra year for a three year hitch. I was a clerk typist for the IG and travelled all over South Korea. Got out as a Specialist 5.

E 2-2. October 1982 to February 1983 (Basic and AIT. Ft. Leonard Wood) I saw plenty of cursing, yelling, pushing, kicking, smashing, from the Drill Seargents. I even got smacked around a couple of times myself. Back then we even did PT in combat boots and BDUs. I do believe 1986 was the year the Department of Defense turned Basic training into a touchy feely type of training environment.

When I was there in '85 the gas chamber we went through had a large tree right outside the exit door. There was a sergeant standing there to guide people away from the tree as they came out, but if you came running out early, they just let you run into the tree, as one guy in my squad found out the hard way. Not only did he run into the tree, after he regained his senses, he had to go do the gas chamber again. The DIs were nowhere near as nice as in this video.

I was in E-1-3 summer of '86. This video is heavily edited and shows an excessive amount of the fun stuff, like the obstacle course, which made up less than1% of BT. We did spend a lot of time at the M-16 ranges. We also spent a lot of time in classes, which is barely shown, and in MOPP gear, which is also barely shown. And a lot of time getting screamed at and cussed at by the DI's, which isn't shown. All in all it was a good experience that I absolutely hated at the time but look back on with strangely positive memories. The food was fantastic. Right before we got loaded into the cattle cars for the trip from the reception station to E-1-3, I remember overhearing one of our drill Sergeants being told that he was getting an entire platoon of National Guardsmen from California and he sounded really disappointed. His disappointment never subsided, even after we were awarded honor platoon.

Yes, Yes. I went through basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood in Jun 87. Delta 31st. We had Drill Sergeant Roak, St. May, St Monroe, Sgt Robinson, and Sgt Lestikow. Man they were tough. Thank you for the discipline and the training. Taught me alot of respect for others and myself. Is there anybody else that were in Delta 31st summer of 1987?
