Robyn Hitchcock is one of England's most enduring contemporary singer/songwriters and live performers. A surrealist poet, talented guitarist, cult artist and musician's musician, Hitchcock is among alternative rock's father figures. Since founding the art-rock band The Soft Boys in 1976, Robyn has recorded more than 20 albums as well as starred in ‘Storefront Hitchcock’ an in concert film recorded in New York and directed by Jonathan Demme.
Blending folk and psychedelia with a wry British nihilism, Robyn describes his songs as ‘paintings you can listen to’.
This album might just be my favorite Robyn Hitchcock album thus far. It's astonishingly good. He sounds revitalized, and as much as I enjoy his acoustic stuff, he's meant to play that Tele with a band and they sound fantastic here.
I saw this video on MTV in the spring of 1989 when it came out. I was falling hard for my first girlfriend then and this song was all too perfect and prophetic. She ended up being my Lost Madonna of the Wasps.
Remember when they used to always play it on WHFS? I worked at an indie label, and he had a crush on my boss, so I would talk to him when he called. He was very nice.
Can you imagine what the people say? Can you? But the silent majority Is the crime of the century You know it Are you sure that it's wise? No, you probably ain't You don't wanna be faint about it Oh, you shouldn't be faint about it now By the look in your eyes No, you probably ain't But you shouldn't be faint about it Oh, you gotta be faint about it now
The video would make more sense if it showed all the crazy hysterics of the media and democrats going after trump when he was president.. they were willing to destroy the country with all there lies and gaslighting.. ohh everyone is racist.. Trump's a secret Russian agent.. we need to get rid of the police.. men can have babies.. oh no global warming stop making cars.. ohh so it's the Jewish people are the Nazis.. ok.. I wouldn't be surprised if covid 19 was a strategic release.. oh I better watch were jailing people that think different now.. we can only have democracy if we destroy and jail political opponents... And etc..etc...
I've never seen the video. In the alternative universe that we fans inhabit this was huge hit!But for others Im guessing this was to commercial.I like it all.Still has an edge and catchy as hell.
The only problem with this is Nancy Pelosi, Obama, Biden and Bill Clinton aren't included. I'd like to re-edit it to include them, because they're at fault too, just not as much as Trump. I'd end the video with Hillary Clinton and Liz Cheney clapping.
I've been a fan of Robyn's since the late 80s. I think 86 when I first heard Globe of Frogs. I've seen him multiple times live over those years. He is one of my top favorite and always entertaining with his quirky stories and equally quirky lyrics. He deserves more recognition than he gets.
