I'm a new artist (it still feels weird to use that term - I've been mostly an "IT guy" up until August of 2023). I have a little shop in Eugene Oregon. I started making automata & kinetic art around July of 2023 and I have been shocked at the amount of support and encouragement that I have received from everyone. I still can't believe that I was able to quit my job and haven't ended up living on the streets by now.
I still do a little dance when I see a new subscriber and I run to show my wife Becky the phone when a video gets more than 500 views, so yeah, I'm still really new at this and have no idea what I am doing.
I hope I can make some videos that are worth your time to watch. Until I get up the courage to put myself on camera, I hope videos of my little robot series automata and the occasional side project will at least offer a bit of entertainment. I'll try to keep them very short.
Be really careful cutting the little round plug in half. I had one take off spinning on me in the band saw and give me quite the wood burn/cut, so use a clamp or something to hold it if you're going to do something similar. Let me know how it goes. I'd love to see what it looks like when you get it done if you're willing to share an image or something.
I think it's called a "fast return actuator". I used an offset pin in a circular cam that goes into a slot in an arm. It's easiest to look up the term and see a drawing or graphic.
I am so glad you found me. You're welcome to swing by the shop any time if you want to see what I'm working on. I'm @spetzlerdesigns on Instagram if you want to message me directly.
The arms are in different positions And it makes them look like they have more character... Especially The person on The left whereas his arm was straight down now it is slightly tilted forward
Good eye. I do tend to pay attention to the default position of the arms a lot more than I used to. All of the arms are somewhat adjustable (the arms are not glued solid, but jointed with a piece of leather cord that allows me to rotate them), so you can re-position the arms of all of these robots to some degree. They may go back to the default position over time though, so it's still important where they are rotated when I first glue them.
Love to see your ideas and solutions evolve! I was wondering what kind of wire you used. Your tips are interesting and helpful and the end result is fantastic! Can't wait for the next update! Thanks for sharing Gary!
My apologies. I am old enough that I've lost the ability to hear high frequency sounds. I can't hear the sound, so I'm not sure how to know if it's there. I'll try turning off all the equipment in the shop. Hopefully it's not my desk light.
I'm struggling to finish the last 4, but I am determined to do so. I've been wanting to try making whirligigs, and I purchased the supplies to do a musical door chime. Honestly, there's so much that excites me that I'm having trouble deciding what I want to do next.
Yes. That was my first thought too. The two companies I contacted to make one for me told me that the size is too small and detailed for them to turn into a brand. I haven't tried any others recently. That would be ideal though.
I'm planning on doing a lot more of these. It just takes me a really long time to make & edit them for some reason, so I have to save up the energy to do it. I still have 4 more in the robot series to finish and then we'll see how motivated I am. Thanks for the nice comment!
I don't think I can explain it in words because I don't know what the components are named. It's basically an offset cam shaft with a slotted wire loop so that the wire goes side to side, but not up and down.
If the range of motion for the head is measured in 180degrees where 0 is looking straight down and 180 is looking straight up (90 being totally neutral); you should have the head bobbing range from 45 to 90. That would look more natural
I was thinking something similar while I was editing the video. For some reason it does not look the same in person as in the video, but you're right, even in person it would look a bit better with a more neutral neck position.
This video brought a lot of feelings for me. I saw a more recent video you posted and knew i needed to see a cat one. I didnt expect the immediate connection to form so deeply.. this was a constant ritual between my cat and myself, before she passed away unexpectedly at the start of this year. Im here with a wet face and a deep memory. Thank you. She definitely pet herself better than i ever could, and would even steal the brush to do it herself. You captured the emotion perfectly.
I agree, it would be so much better. I am not sure where to find un-copy protected background music and this was the least terrible I could find in the RU-vid library within the hour or so I was willing to search.
Добрый день. Давно слежу за вашими поделками. Даже думаю сделать копию нескольких моделей, с Вашего позволения. Для себя. Эти человечки как живые. И очень добрые.
