I'm an aging white man who is trying to learn more about the problems facing African Americans and their communities. I'm discovering how very little I know about life in the streets. I can only wonder if, after centuries of oppression..... Are there any solutions? As if the problems of the black communities weren't enough, we once again live in a time where overt racism is not only acceptable, it's become fashionable in so many parts of the nation. My heart aches for these people.

Complains of police response times. Community actively partakes in action and law to decrease officers and funding that would greatly increase it. Then community continues action, violence, that create worse situations for officers leading them to not work within that area due to the danger levels. "Hey man don't call the cops he will arrest us." Then its, "Why the hell the cops take so long". The logic the one dude is presenting makes zero sense.

I live in Northwest Philadelphia 15 minutes out from west and 69th the white neighborhood response shit is 100% dead wrong its only the wealthy white neighborhoods. My moms car was broken into and robbed and a year later nothing has been done by police to catch the culprit. It is all parts of inner city Philadelphia not just west or north and it really is a matter of trust because how are people supposed to trust you when you don’t help them? Some cops can be trusted and some can’t all a matter of how much you know your community.
@Cool_Clark
@Cool_Clark 5 лет назад
Also racial divide I don’t see because I’ve seen bad white neighborhoods, bad Hispanic, Vietnamese, Black, Cambodian, Arab you name it in my life all have their own code and how to live but each has a core set of values and beliefs that each of the communities share. A block makes a difference and to stop the cycle is hard because of little chance to climb out of that place you’re in. Drug abuse and alcoholism are major players in this and run in the families of those we see in the inner city my family included and when we have those standards for our kids they won’t want to be doctors or lawyers because they lose any hope of those dreams early on. And this was the 90s and in 2018 it’s still like this today I have lost friends to drugs, muggings as well as some being murdered or thrown in jail people I went to school with in highschool even got robbed on their way home one of which was robbed 3 blocks from school in broad day at gunpoint. So being street smart is a necessity to survive but we can’t let it be the end all be all that guides our life. If you’re going to come at a problem it needs to be dealt with on all fronts not just the black community but every inter city community from the Irish and Italian neighborhoods of south philly to the mostly black neighborhoods of north and west Philadelphia. And that means coming together as a community to work together to make our neighborhoods safer and to maybe give the future generations a chance.

SUCH A sad truth about our country, we need better governmental policies in place to help these kids get out of the street businesses. Instead of placing so much money on cops policing low-income neighborhoods, we should have programs in place to help with nutrition, education, and social advancements. The cycle needs to be broken, early in the line.

more government? I would argue these places need stronger family values...

Yes there’s a need for nutrition. Yes there’s a need for education and social advancements. But WHO will do this? Nobody but the people in the community. Anything else is inauthentic and will not stand the test of time.

@@ilypolog6252 stronger family values is absolutely necessary. We see that in the black community fatherless homes numbers are insane relative to maybe more white communities. If they build stronger values and have good morals then we wouldn’t have this problem

WHY IS THERE NO MENTION OF ALL THE FAMILIES THAT THE FATHER IS ABSENT... THE ONLY MALES INFLUENCE IN MOST OF THE INNER CITY FAMILIES ARE THE DRUG DEALING, PIMP GANG LEADERS ON EVERY STREET CORNER.... THUGS IN THE INNER CITIES HAVE NEVER LEARNED THE WORD "ACCOUNTABILITY"...

The drug dealing, pimp, gang leaders on those street corners are the fathers! Out there hustlin cuz that's all they know. That's all they care to learn. That's all they care to take accountability for. They have the power and the understanding to change their own lives but they make there active choice not to. I KNOW this is the truth. I lived it; to an extent anyway. I wasn't a pimp or a gang leader. I did run drugs though. Heavy weight. Please, dont think I'm bragging about that, I'm not. Something I do take pride in is that I made the active choice to get out. I wasn't given an opportunity. No more chance than anyone else from Inner City, USA. Just because you are born into a situation does not mean that you have to stay in it, to wallow in it. To thrive in a bad situation is not prosperous. My point is, If a guy like me, fatherless, raised by the streets, raised by drugs and violence and crime, can choose to get out then ANY human can take the accountability and make the active choice to get out.

Eli wrote about this in the 90s and WE STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. It's time to change. We've lost 30 years of children, mostly boys, to street culture. It's amazing there's people who still defend this stuff. We have to strike at the heart of it. Which means really creating valuable opportunities and teaching critical thinking to shake that stale mentality.
