I agree with his comment about the bucks will tolerate a person coming into their area checking cameras in the late summer. But once they lose their summer coat and velvet they lose their tolerance. Once you get daytime photos of a target buck on a camera stop going in there until you hunt. Check the camera when you get down from your first hunt and decide about the area at that time.
Bobby is a wealth of knowledge and experience and willing to share it. Our paths have crossed in the competitive archery side, and maybe one day in the hunting woods.
One of the BEST interviews I've heard at 61 years old !! This man is the REAL deal n his hard work knowledge n Effort/Passion Shows by his Success !! 😎 He's a WISE Man !!!
As a beginner hunter in my first year I don’t have all the knowledge to hunt without corn. I am going to use it especially since everyone else around me is to even have a chance.
Do what you've got to do to get into it and learn, just make a conscious effort to break from it when you can. You will be able to shoot 2.5 year old during the rut for the rest of your life, but to really shoot the big ones, you'll have to get better and hunt smarter, back in the woods. Either way, enjoy and always try to learn! It's an amazing hobby/lifestyle to be a part of!
@CarnivoreKipp what part of Bama are you in? I used to have a Farm in Henry Co, right near the GA line. Great hunting there but REALLY smart deer. I'm just NE of Columbus, GA now, totally different terrain, no Ag, etc. Feel like I'm having to learn to hunt all over again! It's fun though!
I noticed aggressive snorting bucks in September 2024 towards me on my property in the early morning hours in Southwest Virginia. I haven't seen this before in the past. Is it possibly pre-rut season this year?
I put corn out at home for the deer, but hunt on public (Daniel Boone National Forest) cant use bait there. Well. The acorns drop on the ridges, i hunt acorns but dont call it bait. But it is natural bait. 😂
This guy seems nice but he’s full of hot air. I may be a little dumber now after listening to him. I waited 8 minutes for one nugget of wisdom…NOTHING!
Im not a trophy hunter or any where remotely close to the hunter bobby is but i have a small property i have had permission to hunt for years and once i found a funnel where several trails force the deer in one small area i started to notice that if i stay out until the first of November that i can almost guarantee the very first sit i can at least get a chance at a nice buck. I have had 3 or 4 nice bucks come by the very first time i hunt it.
@@thesouthernoutdoorsmen thank you guys for all the great videos. I love listening to these old school guys. You can really learn alot if you pay attention to what they say.
Since we just reposted the episode on audio last year we probably won't repost it on RU-vid for quite some time. We can still share the audio feed to you if you'd like to listen. We appreciate you listening to the show on RU-vid!
If I see a corn pile in the middle of the woods the first thing I look for is the treestand ,dont you think a big smart buck can make the same connection?
If all bucks were nocturnal if corn was near the rut would be useless and all big deer would be killed by light in the middle of the night. Unpressured bucks on my small plot started disappearing last week and showing up at night, even then its rare compared to August. Days are shortening, they just shed velvet, their bodies are telling them follow instincts. As we listen to a guy on the internet talk about guys on the internet telling people what not to do. 😂
Bait, by definition, is food used to raise odds of killing an animal interested in food. Food plots are bait. Feed trees are natural bait. Change my mind.
Gotta hunt fresh sign on the right times neemver walk right up on a scrape and say oh cool then go sit 20 yards away from it learn to identify them before you come close to them. Use binoculars and examine it from a distance to see if its freshly pawed up and the limbs are freshyly broken. And oay attention to your sense of smell. I more often then not have smelled a deer in its bed with the wind in my face while scouting and like a hound dog i hmjust walk into the smell and kick em up most the time when im within 40 yards or less. Sounds crazy but its something I have been experimenting with the last 2 seasons and im telling you its more often correct especially where there is 3 or 4 piled up with each other and when its real strong usually a buck especially right now the bucks are getting fired up getting stinky ready to mate. Dont ignore the foul smells you might catch a will of. It don't smell like the junk on the shelves it smells different.
@@justinspencer1539 yeah I have done that in my mock scrapes and within a couple days and some times hours deer will be there rubbing their legs together peeing in it too
@@justinlee2642 no it is not a go to tactic but during gun season it's a very productive tactic. Your going to bump deer on public land that's just the game you play so when you bump them take note on it they'll be back in that bedding area eventually. If your not bumping deer your not on deer
Hunting is to hunt the weather. You have to move on change. Bsck side of storms or just before hunt a scrape in the middle of the rain and be there when it stops move in when he wind dies down if its a wind storm and 50 mph gusts and a steady 25 mph wind and the predicted weathwr says 2 hours before last light the wind switches to down to 12 mph, hunt that food source or staging area between bedding and food. Big fluxes in temperature ect.
I have known hunters that have used a chain saw and or a radio on tree plantation’s, as an attractant. The deer were used to those sounds and were not bothered by them giving the hunters an opportunity to harvest a deer.
Y’all give some of the worst advice on this topic… bucks bed in certain locations or bedding areas for the advantage it gives them… no matter what habitat or state they are in… they don’t do random things… use lidar for flat properties u will be surprised it may look flat on a topo but there maybe a 2 foot rise or long distance with a 10 inch high spot he will be right on that high spot. They will still bed in the best locations in a given area… the more options he has in a small area the higher odds it will be part of his core… hunting a 6 plus year old on public. He has been in this same area since he was 3… had a short point on left main beam makes him very recognizable… THEY WILL NOT BED in just any cover unless it gives them an advantage…
You know the best thing about finding a place like this you know where yu aren’t gunna hunt. There’s so many places to hunt around me if it doesn’t check all the boxes do I want to waist my time when time is money I’d rather scout another area where I’m confident I’m not waist of my time.
Can yall please do an episode about coastal Carolina public land hunting? I mean talk about some of the most difficult terrain to navigate and hunt. It would be great to get your advice on it .

All the oak trees here aborted because of drought. Are you guys seeing the same stuff where you are? It’s really challenging me as a hunter to find reliable feeding areas considering the oaks are all pretty empty.
@@thesouthernoutdoorsmen I’m in Maryland. Almost no acorns here. I’m learning how to find forage to hunt but feed trees are basically a non-event this year. Sadly.
Great stuff guys. One thing I've noted is it seems the guys that have had success hunting a single bed are for very old bucks. Its rare to have a buck on public in the south ever get to that age class where their home range shrinks that much. And as you said the abundance of cover makes it even more difficult. Michael Perry had an interview with Chad Morgan who had the former AL muzzleloader record and that was a cool interview. Chad found that deer's bed and got him right near it
I have shot with Bobby in IBO and NFAA many times . He is a true Living Legend at Trad archery and killing big bucks. He is one of my hero's and always will be. And plus he is a great guy.
Some really good stuff. As a mountain hunter myself in PA, the only thing I really don’t agree with is that mountain hunters will take December over any other time of year for deer. I’ll take the end of October into early November over December. It’s not even a question for me. Especially if you’re talking about taking advantage of scrapes. October 19-22 is a sweet spot for bucks daylighting on them.
So crazy to me, listening to Mr Bobby speak, it was like he was speaking 90% about life and only 10% about deer hunting, yet all about deer hunting all at the same time. I love how his logic can be used universally with any aspects of life, hobbies and endeavors. I'd pay big money to just hang out with him for a few days, we wouldn't even have to breathe a word about hunting if he didn't want to.
These older gentlemen that have a lifetime of wisdom to pass on to the younger generations are unfortunately becoming more rare and rare. I could listen to this gentleman for hours and hours and just soak it up like a sponge. This gentleman has a lot to offer to the deer hunters with information but also to guys in life with words of wisdom to pass down for life lessons. Absolutely great episode guys!!!
Man talks about unrealistic expectations, math and probabilities, weather, reading the woods, and accepting reality, and then denies the scientific consensus on the causes of climate change. Ok boomer
We had a guest in the past who talked about hunting right before and right after a hurricane hit. He said it was some of the best movement of the year. I can't remember which guest had said that unfortunately
