As my EDH group waxes and wanes I want to play a bit more with my cards, talk about the game and share what I have.
I thought I'd be able to upload new videos weekly until I run out of decks or other ideas, and lately I've been exceeding that. Had a bit of a renaissance in how I view my decks and what I want to do with them, so have much more presentations for you lads.
@ConnorSaphire It was fun, got some good EDH and Modern games in, actual play showed my Modern Squirrels will run more efficiently if I replace 1- 2 Woodland Cemetery with Overgrown Tomb and confirmed Weather the Storm is a good sideboard card for it. On the way back we got a good look at the damage caused by the previous week's floods, I don't think the rail connection will be fixed anytime soon.
Can't wait to see what low tier card becomes high tier because a new combo is made but they don't update the system. Also white has always had counter spells just very very narrow examples
@indrafides2648 Did you hear what came out about Brawl? I think its a portent of how the EDH tiers will be managed: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q50t8BvWrsU.html
I have to say that while I may not fully agree with all of your points and may not entirely share your viewpoint, I always appreciate input from another regular guy instead of how many creators spesk with authority everything. Besides that, though, you genuinely have a very pleasant voice to listen to. I could imagine you'd be a great narrator!
im glad that im not the only one who things cards with interesting art and history shouldn't be banned just cause of its possible or even probable connotation or relation to real life
counterspells and one time interaction I think unless it's doing something else or maaaybe if it's zero cost should be tier 4 Same with any kinds of combat mechanic stuff. The real things I think people want on the tier list are cards that take over games, or enable otherwise reasonable cards to take over games. As an example 'Koma, Cosmos serpent', without instant speed interaction or exiling interaction is really difficult to stop overwhelming a table at lower power levels. If you play a deck that's just ramp and protection Koma will often just win you the game on it's own. especially if you put some form of anthemn in.
@funa2865 'counterspells and one time interaction I think unless it's doing something else or maaaybe if it's zero cost should be tier 4' By 'tier 4' to you mean lowest tier / 'precon level'?
@@funa2865 Definitely, though I still want to see almost the entire banned list dumped on the top tier, I want to see a Darwinian game state where the truly mad players can do everything they want to do. It'd be the nerd version of Jund in real life.
@@keywacat nobody is saying its not a good or effective card. the issue is that the artist is an actual white supremacist and the fact that you're comfortable using the card with art by said white supremacist. the art is a very clear reflection of the artists extremely harmful real-world beliefs it was also catalogued as card number 1488 on Gatherer. the use of the number 1488 is a white supremacist dogwhistle and has been for decades why not just proxy the card with a different piece of art? hell you're already playing a card banned in EDH, you could probably change the name to something more tasteful as well and nobody would care. then you also wouldn't be signaling that you share the beliefs of the artist
Black has been able to kill enchantments for ages. See (Gate to Phyrexia) It’s artifacts that black has trouble with. I don’t see the problem with a black mage using the color that represents “power at any cost” being able to break a white mage’s enchantment.
@meatforge Gate to Phyrexia deals with artifacts though. And to be honest I must agree black should be able to do anything for a price, it does fit the colour identity.
@@meatforge No worries, any regular listener can confirm my memory fails me with cards all the time. Sometimes even when I'm looking right at the damn card. 😕
@ultraherman7727 The game following was far better (for me). That's the one I should have recorded. :-/ Stevo had gone to bed so it was Frenchie, Big Jimmy and myself for a three-man game. I got off a turn one Sol Ring, followed by turn two Copy Artifact to copy the Sol Ring and it just went on from there. Both other lads were playing heavy green decks, Big Jimmy with some value-token engine, Frenchie with Jodah legends. Reflector Mage was doing pretty good at keeping Big Jimmy's Scute Mob off the table (I really did not want him resolving an ever-increasing number of triggers at two o'clock in the morning after we'd been drinking), and then when Big Jimmy committed a major attack on me I cast the Hibernation I'd been holding most the game, making his army go *poof*. Frenchie, being a victim of Hibernation as well (which I'd only added to the deck as a lark) looked at the board and said he's done, the game is pretty much over now. Big Jimmy agreed and that was that.
I really enjoyed the conclusion. A few days ago, I reinstalled Shandalar and was amazed at how fun old-school Magic is. It feels like casual kitchen table Magic, with hundreds of different decks, no banlists, and no meta. It's like playing vintage duels, but your opponent only has one Mox Sapphire in his deck because they only run blue cards-stuff like that. So lately, I've been spending some of my free time going through the various decklists in the game and tweaking them for my own enjoyment. If you manage to run the game, I recommend it, there are also mods that add cards and decks till 2016 I think? (I have a 2010 version) I don't plan on picking up any Duskmourn cards, and I completely skipped over Thunder Junction and Karlov Manor. I’m not interested in Marvel crossovers, or Jace and Liliana racing go-karts in space. Plus, I know I'll be moving to a new city in about a year, both for work reason and starting a family and getting married, so I’ll lose my current group. I got into Pauper mainly thanks to my fiancée. She being the wonder she likes joining in on my hobbies, but Commander games take too long for her. After one round, she's done haha. Pauper, on the other hand, moves quicker, and we end up laughing a lot more. That’s kind of how I see my future: I’ll keep playing the game, but I won’t necessarily keep up with the game.
@LittleMushroomGuy I'd forgotten about Duels of the Planeswalkers (Shandalar), last time I played that was in 1998 when I went to sea. I'm happy for you that your life is progressing and you've someone that supports your hobbies to share it with. 🙂
@@uniteallaction Ah, I get your point now. Well, I'll still buy cards I like, but will try my damnedest to cut it off at Bloomburrow. Though I did fail in my attempt to cut it off at Olivia's Wedding. 😕
I find it interesting how they decided that Drannith Magistrate is tier 3, but all tutors are tier 4. I guess they wanted to clearly state that stax is not the problem, just fast cards. No mention of Thoracle, U.Breach, Exquisite Blood etc and other infinite loop instant win 2 card combos, which made me think that some might end up banned
@LittleMushroomGuy I didn't see anyone mention Drannith Magistrate, was that from some follow-on announcement? All those 'I win!' cards are going in the top tier, why curate a banned list when it's easier to throw cards into a higher tier? Makes everyone happy they can play with their cards and run as broken a game as they can stand.
@@keywacat Yes on twitch they revealed a infographic demonstrating the 4 tiers. It should be their latest stream, on the 00:18:30 mark. Swords and Grave Titan are tier 1, Fabricate and Thalia are Tier 2, Magistrate is tier 3 and Armageddon and VampTutor are tier 4
Seriously, it should be illegal to put crap like Mirri, Fiend of the Shadows or Blood Baron of Vizkopa into Eddy's deck. For the price of two true dual lands (which are completely unnecessary here, but then you wouldn't be able to boast about these proxies), you could have built a really good deck that would blow the heck out of every deck at every table...but instead you have a cold steak with old fries...disaster :(
@spookyfoxpl I think you missed my point about controlling the power level and playing with cards I enjoy simply because I enjoy them. And what proxies am I boasting about?
@blackbeard2543 Well, yes, but unless you do it with Sakashima the Imposter or have a Mirror Gallery out you'll have to choose one of the copies to die for the 'Legend Rule'.
@jcstaff1007 I started reading that, a lot of good advice there and I've already placed a new order for some of what my LGS has in stock. :-) Grand Crescendo is especially interesting as a double-duty token generator and protective spell, March of the Multitudes will work better than Army of the Damned and Jetmir is someone I just didn't know about (as I often say, you lads are grand at informing me on new cards, I in turn tell you about old cards). As for some of the other recommendations Aurelia can use Loyal Unicorn as well as Saskia, Clarion Spirit is there as an early token generator (yes, I don't get that many from him, could be I should replace him with Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse or just run a copy of her alongside) and Flowering of the White Tree is from Lord of the Rings, I don't like mixing Universes Beyond with 'mainline' Magic cards. Yes, Voja has Inigo Montoya, but that's because I really do not care for Samut's art. All in all, thanks again, I appreciate your effort and ideas!
@jcstaff1007 Between Illustrious Wanderglyph and Tendershoot Dryad (neither are cheap and my LGS did not have a foil Dryad) I went with Beledros Witherbloom. :-D Aye, he costs 7, not 5 and doesn't buff the team, but a foil one was readily available and his 'pay 10 life untap yo' lands' is a good addition to the deck. At least if last night presented a typical scenario. Game 1: I got blown out early to that Duskmourn Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls precon, Cube came out swinging and got a grip of extra damage effects online fast. I think I was out before turn 8. Game 2: I got up to 112 life by playing tokens behind a turn 2 Auriok Champion, followed up with a turn 5 Doubling Season. The Genie got testy as Cube (playing the squirrels precon from Bloomburrow) and I basically ran roughshod over him and Roman, my occasional delays in grasping the triggers and interactions in this new deck did not help.
@@keywacat I had a feeling when they announced invisible ink foils for the Not-Cluedo set that they will crack down on bootleggers sooner or later. The new Not-Strangers Thing set also has some crazy foils, ugly, not rare and hard to replicate
@@LittleMushroomGuy They crack down when and where they can, but I think the way the Chinese run frontmen between the buyers and the printer makes it difficult to stamp out. That and the current political situation vis-a-vis the US likely dampens Chinese government interest in stopping it on their end.
From what I have heard they are fully in control of it. The RC working with/for Wizards and there's a lot of money involved. Totally agree on the Sheldon part. That's why they reprinted and cashed in on the banned cards last year CMM and RIX while already knowing they are going to be banned. Disgusting. 200% cards wont be reprinted in the next years. But whatever, players should play what they want with their friends anyway. Just sucks , that they beat the customers trust again though its already on the ground. All in all a stupid move since rule 0 exist and I don't even own these cards.
@MitFruchtSaft Rule Zero only works in a known group, with people you see often and actually hold conversations with. Sitting down at a new table with people one has never met before, or only meet sporadically, it helps that the RC provides a common ground for the times no one has an interest in holding the Rule Zero chat. For example the lads I play with out in Ostruzna agree with ignoring WotC's 'cultural insensitivity' bullshit: studio.ru-vid.comOUBbQPmT2LM/edit , a bunch of random players might not be as reasonable.
@ultraherman7727 I hadn't thought of any clones, even though (as you point out) its kind of an obvious thing to consider. Given the number of legendary creatures in this deck Sakashima the Imposter would be a solid addition, with Clever Impersonator or Phyrexian Metamorph right behind.
@andrewdecarolis3308 When I read that I first thought you were talking about cards that have been banned a long time, I had started the idea the RC doesn't ban cards anymore, it hits WotC too hard in the earnings. After thinking it over I suspected that was not it, and DAMN! that was NOT IT!: mtgcommander.net/index.php/2024/09/23/september-2024-quarterly-update/ Wow. Dockside, Erdu, Mana Crypt and Jewelled lotus are OUT!? Wow, much wow. Well, selfishly I'm happier now with selling my Mana Crypt, glad I won't be seeing any Erdu bullshit in my groups and a bit chuffed I have to take away Kaervek's Dockside. The upshot is that I now have zero pressure to acquire Dockside for Aurelia, so there's that. Jewelled Lotus I never thought was all that great. To be effective one needs to draw it early and run a commander it pairs well with (most of them, admittedly). No one in my groups run one, meaning I never saw how good it was in reality and considered it pretty much a cEDH card.
I should have clarified. It was a project for your job. Where they just assumed you knew what you were doing right away and worked for the company or something
Starlight Spectacular from Unfinity. Goes great in a go-wide deck. I know, I know..."ew, un-sets" but hey, it's legal in the format and does the job. And unlike most "un-"cards it WILL be printed again.
60 card deck 56 manas total 116 cards. everytime i start with one or two manas if im lucky. then is not getting manas for 10 turns in a row or i only get mana for 10 turns in a row. other mono chromatic deck 60 cards total 36 cards 24 mana, same shit..... it's because i don't spend money... fuck the world. and for those fat cunts that only win by spending money, well, at least i get laid hahahhah
Since you are playing almost all basic lands and Thawing Glaciers, I think Stone-Seeder Hierophant should be an autoinclude, since it allows you to fetch all your basics from deck in a single turn
@LittleMushroomGuy I had to look her up, and you're right that she'd fit right in, though I don't think she'll work the way you want her to. The basic land Thawing Glaciers fetches come into play tapped, so when the basic enters I can untap Glaciers to find another basic and Stone-Seeder Hierophant can target Glaciers, untapping it, true enough. The problem is that unless I can untap that basic, or have Lotus Cobra, Amulet of Vigour, Tireless Provisioner or the like I will eventually run out of mana to activate Thawing Glaciers. That said, pulling, say, 4 land out of my deck at a time is still pretty damn good. :-D Right, another card for my MKM 'wants' list... ;-)
For your ghostly flicker, you can add a DualCaster Mage and copy it infinite times target it and a land each time. You can target a different land each time, making infinite mana of each color. Then you can use Kenrith’s ability to give everything you have on the battlefield/grave haste and infinite 1/1 counters. Win with an overrun.
I've heard the "eminence was a mistake" thing a lot too. They put eminence on Sidar Jabari just last year, so I'm guessing it was taken out of context. Jabari's eminence was much more specific than those 2017 commanders, so I wonder if they consider that a proper fix or still a regret.
@Utenlok When Long Pete joins us he always play Cube's Sidar Jabari deck and I can tell you his eminence trigger pulls him ahead nearly as well as Edgar's. *Anything* a player gets for free, especially when triggered by doing something they and the deck wants to do anyway is going to be borderline broken, at best.
It's not just a hearsay comment either. Gavin Verhey himself has made multiple videos talking about certain cards being design failures (Najeela, Yuriko) and Jabari still pulls out ahead with having a free discard outlet just by existing.
If you get entomb , reanimate razaketh Necromancy dance of the dead worldgorger dragon living death toxic deluge, reanimate You could do the infinite mana worldgorger combo for entomb worldgorger dance of dead/ Necromancy/ animate dead Look up the combo online/ you can get infinite colored mana and deck out your opponents
@ultraherman7727 Bro, bro, calm down, calm down. It was bad enough yesterday when I tossed Avacyn and Horobi in my graveyard with Wheel of Fortune then resurrected them both (my ramp suite was firing on all cylinders). Once Long Pete realised what I could do (kill anything on the board for 1G) he conceded though it took him a minute to see the future (he's a new player). Cube had it figured out as soon as his Tyrannid commander that puts a counter on target creature (ANY creature, not just his as it turns out) failed to kill Horobi as Avacyn was looking out for my boys.
Thx so much for the feedback , much appreciated I just love your mtg content It's relaxing to listen to while I organize my decks and my collection @keywacat
4:24 stop playing these bad stax pieces. Yes they do amazing work against certain decks. But if you’re objectively sacrificing you own color fixing to play these and they DON’T advance YOUR own game plan then they aren’t worth running. Not to mention you’re not guaranteed to find these cards. But you ARE guaranteed to be in 5 colors and each land only tapping for one color on average. The math doesn’t work in favor of these hate pieces. Not to mention if the table wants they’ll just use player removal and attack you. EDH is a SOCIAL format. 9/10 times players will attack or remove the thing that is bothering them and if you’re not letting them untap or play the game via stax pieces, and you don’t have the card draw+ the mana+ the bodies on board to win before they gang up on you, you’re always going to lose. Not to mention these can be removed and ruination would be a better choice by far. Or Price of Progress. At least those two are going to permanently put you ahead of other by un ramping them and dealing damage to them respectively. You’re in 5 colors and the best color to ramp in is green so add more green ramp. Open the Way is amazing in other decks bc it can ramp NONBASICS. But in lieu of that rampant growth and any 2-3 mana spell that gets basic lands is fine. Ideally bc you’re playing a ton of basics you can find spells that get a ton of them out at once. Rampant Rejuvinator can get a ton, and kenrith can synergize with it. Same with Travers the Outlands and Kenrith’s +1/+1 ability. You need to think critically and not just the best case scenario. The floor. Think about what’s the floor for a card. I’ll give you an example: Omnath Locus of All is 5 colors (4 bc of the phyrexian mana) 4 color cards are hard to cast (especially on curve) when you’re only playing basics. And 4 mana to draw you a card every turn is pretty bad. Keep in mind Phyrexian Arena is 3 mana draw a card every turn. And you’re willing to potentially pay more AND not even on turn 4. More like turn 7-8 bc you objectively have very little fixing. Im not trying to bash you, im trying to have you open your eyes a bit and look deeper than this best case scenario is good.
@jcstaff1007 What exact 'bad stax piece' are you referring to? Back to Basics? I should just go with Global Ruin instead? Cheers for telling me about Rampant Rejuvinator and Open the Way, I did not know they existed. The other reason for Omnath is to keep the mana generated by Braid of Fire, but yeah, otherwise 4 to draw 1 extra card each turn isn't terribly efficient, Rhystic Study would be better for it.
@@keywacat let’s go one by one (this might take a while to read, try to bear with me, thanks): 1. No problem on the recommended cards, there’s so many coming out I wouldn’t expect everyone to know what’s out there. Not to mention the card pool is almost every card printed ever. Sit tight this next part is gonna be a little complex. 2. Every card, even stax pieces, have have qualities that change from deck to deck. I go by this to say a card is bad or more accurately doesn’t fit a deck. A) opportunity cost: every card has an opportunity cost. The opportunity cost depends on where in your deck that card can fit and what other cards can also be in that slot. You compare how easily it can go in and what value it brings as opposed to any other card that can go in that slot. I’ll give an example using stax cards: BACK TO BASICS vs STONE OF ERECH. They’re both stax pieces but both do different things. How do we compare them in your Kenrith Deck? We look at what they are first. Stax pieces. Ok simple enough. They ideally slow down our opponents. BTB is a 2 mana enchantment that affects US too. So you HAVE to warp your mana base around it otherwise you’re staxing yourself too. Stone of Erech is a grave hate piece that ONLY affects your opponents. BTB is blue and usually the color requirement matters due to casting cost, but it’s relatively easy to cast. Stone of Erech is 1 generic. Very easy to cast. BTB cannot cycle itself if it’s not useful. Aka if someone has a monocolored deck and all basics, then it won’t do anything as a worst case scenario. STONE OF ERECH you can pay 2 mana, sacrifice it, exile an opponent’s grave and draw a card. So it can literally cycle itself if it’s not good in a match up or even if someone tries to remove it. BTB makes people’s lands not untap, so they’ll most likely try to kill you or gang up on you. That’s bad. STONE OF ERECH goes mostly unnoticed by most decks bc you’re not stopping players from playing the game. In summary: Back to basics gets you killed, limits your mana base to basics mostly in a 5 color deck where colors are the most important, doesn’t affect every opponent equally, and doesn’t cycle itself so it has a HIGH OPPORTUNITY COST. Stone of Erech has a LOWER OPPORTUNITY COST than back to basics bc it’s cheap, can cycle itself for any other card in your deck, and it wont get you killed 9/10 times. Even if it does it’s only going to be the player that it affects the most. So Back to Basics is a bad stax piece. Not to mention if it gets removed, unlike an Armageddon, your opponents will most likely untap and proceed to beat your ass for staxing them. You will be seen as the arch enemy. If you play stax, you have to be able to deal with the amount of hate it brings. And usually only powerful decks like Urza lord high artificer can do that bc he makes stax pieces one sided. 3. Ok here’s another problem you have. Any card interacting with ONLY one other card in the 99 isn’t enough synergy to justify it’s inclusion. Braid of Fire is bad bc it mostly only works with Kenrith. Why is this bad? Bc it doesn’t ramp you, it doesn’t draw you cards, it doesn’t create a board state of creatures to block with, you can’t really use the mana for anything else. It’s a mid card at best and does AGAIN nothing at worst. Both cards aren’t worth the inclusion. A lot of synergy would be like 8+ cards that can all use the mana from Braid of Fire ASIDE from your commander. Try to use the tags in moxfield to group cards by card draw, ramp, removal, protection, synergy etc. in the synergy category try to narrow down what the decks you have want to do and put those cards in there. Example; [1/1 counters. Put in that tag category every card that makes or uses 1/1 counters.] Good luck. Have fun out there. I wanna hear about more wins soon.
