My bolts were in but all 4 were somewhat loose, I tightend them and went for a drive right after, I tried to get the clanging noise to happen, driving over rough road, sharp left and right turns, stopping and taking off quickly, then slowely, I am happy to report no more clanging! Thanks for the great video!
Wow it’s almost 2 yrs since I get this truck that friking grinding noise when press brakes hard I was feeling like something slide forward in the center of the truck . It’s almost 10 pm my little 6 yrs old son help me to fix it, thanks to you Mr I really appreciate it. I owe you some tacos and a 12 pack of u favorite beer.
I want to thank you as well for this video. I saw it last night around 11 pm. My curiosity was driving me crazy. it couldn't be this easy, could it? In the past 2 weeks I changed the front shock/struts, and the sway bar links myself. Still clunking. I got up out of bed, proceeded to grab a few sockets, a flashlight, and head out to the carport. Climbed under my '05 Sequoia and low and behold! All 4 original bolts, still there, but loose! Each one required at least 1 full turn, some 2. I then of course had to test drive it. Clunking noise GONE!! Couldn't friggin believe it! I was at the point of throwing parts at it, that this might get expensive. I'm able to do some thing's myself, but I was envisioning having to take it somewhere to get to the bottom of this noise. Thank you again for this!!
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Happened upon your video as my 2005 SR5 (blue) has been clunking for about 6 months. I have replaced the control arms, suspension, ball joints and tie rods at a repair shop in attempts to fix this noise. To no avail and they wanted to replace the rack and pinion next. Already spending too much, I find this diamond of a video at 11 pm before bed. I rush out to the garage and I find 3 missing bolts and one loose and about to fall out. My man! You rock. I can’t wait to get this fixed. My wife told me to get rid of my Sequoia bc it is “old” and making noise, but it runs great and I knew there was a solution. Thanks.
Thank You brother. Clunk has been aggravating me since I purchased. Previous owner changed upper/lower control arms, shocks/coils, ball joints, new bushings, new rotors/pads. Probably chasing that damn clunk. 1 bolt was gone, other three very loose. Thanks!
Dude you literally just solved my clunking I have been trying to find for weeks! I recently bought a sequoia and there are no bolts there! Thank you so much.
Just tightened mine ...Much Thanks. They were loose. I may just replace the mount. 3 racks...2 were failures, I bought a Toyota rebuilt rack $730 ( only one around the Western and Central US.), The mechaniks said the Toyota rack was crap, I told them I bought this Toyota rack to solve this problem and they insisted on using their rack guy again, I told them, well his dint last not even 500 miles and the bushings were all jacked up. Found out the Power steering pump was bad from all the crud going through it. The Toy. rack was fine. Another guy wanted $3800 to replace the entire suspension and still wouldn't of tighten those trans bolts. Found the Sway bar bushings need to go as well.....Moog parts -$20 Good thing God taught me alot of serious patience. Had my Ex been around, I'd go send her over ( in hottie shorts ) to the shop and give them guys a earful and shame the hell out of them !!
I have an 03 sequoia Awd and it does the clunking and stopping and going. I checked the link and it says 05 and up. Think the new hardware might fit in mine?
Like everyone else here, thanks so much. This noise has been driving me crazy for a year or two. I thought it was suspension or brake related, but could never find anything and it was intermittent. I couldn't believe when I looked under there and all four bolts were missing.
Did you feel a major shift , when braking ? If I’m extremely gentle on brakes I don’t feel it much , but give it anything more then very slight braking feels like major shifting of something . I thought it was my brakes at first . Changed pads yesterday . It was still happening along with the thud / clunk , up to about 35 mph or so . Came across this video , checked , and all 4 bolts are gone . Ordered them just now . 2006 tundra
Just did mine on my 07 sequoia sr5 2wd. All my four bolts were lose. I hand tightened them and now we shall see if the clunk noise is gone. Thank you kind sir.
Im missing all 4 of mine!!!!!!!! WTF ok... So I called the stearlership and they want almost $5 for 1 screw so not even going there. They also said since its a "service bulletin" that since time has passed for the warranty of powertrain that its on me now.... Im sure this is the problem to my issue since all 4 are missing but dang how da hell this happen.. Wish me luck.
I have a 2019 tundra and every time I put it in drive as soon as it starts pulling off it makes this squeak oof sound. I can turn off the truck walk into the store and get back on my truck turn it on and as soon as I start rolling it makes that sound as this part of it?
Yeah, don't go back to Smirestone ever again. Bushings generally don't clunk unless they are completely shot and their rubber component is no longer shielding from metal to metal contact. They will squeak sometimes though. Now the questions is, did replacing these 4 bolts solve your clunking issues?
Hey, great question! No, when you add the 2nd set of wheels, the vehicle outlearns the TPMS sensors and their proximity to the corners of the vehicle. Since the spare never moves and remains unchanged, it doesn't need to "relearn" that one.
I've been driving around on and off the highway for about 3-4 times now (definitely more than 2 hour in total), but it's still showing reregistering... Did you have to do anything to activate the batteries or anything on the sensors?
OMG!......I figured it was the rack and pinion. Just check what you showed and sure as hell, 1 was missing and the other 3 were about to fall out. Thanks for saving me $$$$. You are a genius!
I'm unsure, but my gut says that the center differential and trans mount would probably be designed different (better) on the 4WD models and have a few more bolts. This is just my guess though.
Any luck? I couldn't believe how long I put up with mine before I found it. I had attributed it to being a slip yoke issue or something that was just a "feature" of something that was almost 20 years old like the slip yoke rusting and binding or something like that.
I had this exact thing happen. Shop diagnosed it as shocks, replaced the shocks and still a clunk. re-diagnosed it as steering rack bushings, replaced bushings and still a clunk. Took it to the dealer and they found this issue in 10 min and fixed it for free.
Lol. U must have been in the military to know that rhythm. That’s worse than the roads on the mountains in Alaska. That’s where I reside lol. We least have a buffer on sides of cliff. Lol. But nothing like the thrill of excitement that keeps your heart pumping lol.
There’s a tool the tire shops use , basically you thread the top of the female end on the male end that’s on rim,,,, then you use a half inch piece of rubber. With that piece under the steel handle you press down lifting the valve stem side upwards and it’ll pop it out. Should be able to order at any parts store. But genius way you did it. Nice job on using the ends of the hammer lol. Great video.
Ha! Yeah, I *almost* bought that tool off of amazon but figured that I wouldn't be doing this process enough to warrant its purchase. Thanks for your reply!!
Yours is RWD I take it. I own a 04’ sequoia as well I will need to look under at mine now. Have you come across with the rear transmission seal seeping tranny fluid. The front of the driveshaft has a yoke that passes on the inside of that seal I’m referring too. I’ve changed out that seal with a toyota seal and still seeps tranny fluid. Maybe cause if my bolts are missing ,,,, I’ll keep an update but thank you for this video. Oh typically the drivers side lower control arm forward bushing goes bad , doesn’t matter if sequoia tundra or Tacoma lol. Your suv looks really good. By the way.
Thanks, Damien! No, mine never seeped/leaked fluid from the front or rear of the transmission. The engine rear main seal leaked, but noting bad. Thanks for the message and the compliment! Hope you have a great rest of your week!
Thank you! I've been tracking down this clunking issue for several years, until saw this radio. I immediately check my 2007 sequoia and surely there're four empty holes there, no bolt at all. Ordered bolts from dealer and put them in yesterday. I guess this might also be the reason for the occasional small transmission oil leak in that area... oil leaks from the seal because of the movement. Another thought, is it possible to add four nuts to make the bolts more secure?
Thanks for the reply! hopefully this helped you! The person in the replies above you has a small leak too in his, I never saw that in mine. (mine is a 2WD tho). Good luck on getting it sorted out!
I have been looking for the source of this noise for 10 years. I replaced the whole front end with new parts because it sounded like it was coming from either upper control arms or lower control arms. Today, I put a search and find this video. Went to my truck, got under it, and the four bolts are missing. Wow. Thank you so much.
@lucasramos7355 - Happy to help! Like you, I suffered with this seemingly random clunking and threw way too many parts and too much time and money before I came across this TSB.
That happen to my wife like year ago she call me and say the truck make a big clunky sound down the road she back to work office like 20 minutes of home im drive to see if we need a wreck or something i just check everything and surprise the 4 bolts was loose juts tight on and now just vibration on braking prob a new feont disc
Anyone found the problem I’ve gotten the bolts on and it still makes that noise I have a 07 limited 140k perfect condition and it’s the only problem thinking bout selling it if I can’t get this noise fix
My first search was to see if the drive shaft slipping into and out of the rear of the transmission and "catching" was the source of the clunk, but after I lubed it and made sure it was clean it still did it. Do you have a GoPro or action camera that you can use to video that area to see if anything is moving? That might help.
Koodos on you! Even reading through the pile of service bulletins would warp a person’s mind! The actual reward is solving this problem (Koodos), and no clunk?(slam dunk)!
@LostatLastAgain Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you.... Hooo your a God send blessing 🙌 🙏 thank you... The sound went away after I check and did what you did. Thank you sir 🙏 ☺️ l...
