Hello my name is Kieran Hayes and I am a professional Landscape and Commercial/Fashion photographer from West Cork, Ireland. My RU-vid channel is a mix of tips and tricks videos as well as reviews with the odd vlog thrown in also. I also works a s apartner for several photography companies including Adobe, Formatt Hitech, f-stop, Luminar Neo, ON1, DXO, SmallRig, DJI and Pixpa to name a few of them. I passionately love photography and while I don't take myself too seriously I do take my photography very seriously and I have been extremely lucky to have worked with some very cool people on some amazing shoots and had my work published thousands of times worldwide now.
Thanks for stopping by and please do subscribe and hit that notification icon, it would be great to have you tag along on my journey with me, to not only share a few laughs but maybe learn a few things also :-) I know I will.
If you have time why not check out my websites, they are full of tips and tricks also.
If it's the battery charging AC adaptor for the Q3 then it's the NT-190150AE is the version I have, yours might be different depending on the type of plug you use. So make sure to double check that. It's a 19 volt 1.5amp power supply. I hope that helps a bit.
Hi, that would normally be done in camera. Have you only a clean HDMI option or can you also enable camera info on the HDMI output? If so then you will see exactly what you see on the cameras own back LCD display with all the recordings info. If you can only use a clean output with no camera info then as far as I know there is no way to enable a timer, sorry.
Yes, they are a similiar alright. Aperty will be growing and no doubt more featurews will be added soon so interesting times ahead for reducing editing times.
Fantastic review kieran .I have just discovered your channel,I have a z7 and it feels like a toy to me compared to my d700 d3x and d4..I like the features of the z7. But build quality is far inferior and I am afraid to use it like my non mirror less cameras.my biggest gripe with z7 is dust and lack of a blind .it seriously limits my changing of lenses. The z8 looks like my type of camera and thanks for such an honest review
Thanks a lot David. The Z8 was the mirrorless camera I was waiting for and while it's not quite DSLR build quality it feels more robust than the Z7 which was what I missed. Also the physical size of the Z7 just didn't feel quite right to me either. Thanks a lot for the feedback and for watching.
I wrote down bullet points and kept talking, now the videos take a half the time to record and editing time is at least halved also. Teleprompters are great to speed up the process especially if you like to talk like I do 😂😂😂
@@kieranhayesphotography would you say it saves that much time overall or that it shifts it to a different part of the process? Or better quality in the same amount of time?
@@AnomieDomine I have found it gives me a more formatted video and it saves me a bunch of time. It takes me about 20 to 30 mins to write it out. The video recording is about 20 to 30 mins shorter and the editing time is about an hour shorter as I don't need to filter out the rubbish pieces as much. If I make a mistake I go back to the start of the sentence and just do it again and keep talking. No idea why I didn't buy one before.
They promise 2 years of upgrades and 5 years of updates but soon they will release another " VERSION"asking for more money or some kind of payment for integration, same old trick on people who fall for it. These companies need to stop this honestly. Where is the "luminar neo" which they promised was going to be beyond this world smh. I hate the dishonesty of these companies. Great video though no hate to you
Hi Danny, where did you see it was just 2 years of upgrades and five years of updates? I asked them directly in a group chat and was told it was all updates going forward. That's a bit concerning now. Luminar Neo has become a subscription service now alright, I tell everyone to go down that route, I know Skylum have had issues in the past and I am told them have learned from it but time will tell on this now I guess. I have passed on info and feedback like this to them before and they appear to be listening, as you say though actions speak louder than words. Thanks for watching anyway and have a great week.
Hi Liam, I actually have the TTArtisans 75mm F2 lens here also for review. I will be posting a full review on it later on in the week. It's a nice handy option also. As I say I will be getting into that in a lot of detail later on in the week.
Well I don't but err.. somebody does when I am using them for a video. Trying my best not to look stupid in a video but I always manage to do it anyway. That's pure natural talent 😂😂😂
Did you watch the video? I am not being smart here now. This video is literally tests shots fired off at a lens testing chart. Not my opinion but more or less fact. Again not being smart with you at all. I ha e heard of a few 180-600 that were not at all sharp so maybe you have or had one of them. Again I am not saying it's a sharp as a prime which I am fairly certain I say in the video also but for a zoom with this focal length shift and at that price I am more than happy with its results. Then again that's why I did this video it's not about my opinion more about the results from the lens. What's sharp for one person is like a full butter knife to the next. Thanks for watching and have a good weekend.
If you dry it out in time, then yes, it should not be a problem. The key is to dry it out as fast as you can and completely. Just don't switch it on until it's completely dry.
I have portrait Pro and Portrait pro body and I can tell you it's certainly not far superior and combined the two cost the same price as Aperty. As Aperty has batch editing also included. If you buy Aperty now you never again have to pay for an upgrade unlike Portrait Pro which has yearly updates. Not arguing with you just sharing my perspective on it after using both and knowing what's in the pipeline I can see Aperty totally taking over this market. Once you're happy with what you're using that's all that matters 👍
@@kieranhayesphotography Skylum can never be trusted on their pricing. I would say it's totally dishonest the way they initially promote their pricing structure on products. . LuminarNeo started out as a one off Licence, now with all the add -on it's totally never ending pricing, confusing and expensive. PotraitPro 24 is priced at €54.95, ...The Studio is €94.95. Once off payments.
I am not justifying anything, don't get me wrong but the Studio max is €175.- and as far as I know that's the only one that will batch edit. Neo has become a subscription based product now that's for sure, it's not too bad pricewise though. I know Skylum had issues let's just put it that way but Neo is a great editing platform now. I use Lightroom, Photo Raw 2024, DXO labs and I have Topaz as well as Neo and for me it's between Neo and Lightroom. Just my personal thoughts on it. Have a great weekend and enjoy the editing.
7:10 in the current version it looks like they have one tightner to tighten all the joints at oince from the bottom so you will not need to have a riser.
Thanks for showing this. The more I see Aperty, the more I think I'm going to request a refund for my preorder. This looks basic compared to Retouch4me or Evoto
Where is the recording saved/Which one does the internal recording? The transmitter(A.K.A the microphone itself) or the Receiver. You kept confusing me
The Microphone itself (transmitter) is what stores the audio recording. When you connect it to a computer it shows up like a flash drive and there are your recordings. Each Mic has its own internal storage then of course.
This is a great review and I'm so glad it was with a Nikon attached. I've just bought this gimbal and for the life of me cannot connect it to the 3e. Do you have any tips? All hardware is up to date. The gimbal says its connected via Bluetooth but the back of my camera asks me to 'follow the app'. Not even sure what that means but I'm clearly not connecting properly. Z6ii this is with. 😢
Hi Martin, did you email me earlier? If so I replied to the email. I generally use the cable connection from the second USB port on the gimbal tilt arm to the camera for a few reasons, firstly no bluetooth pairing and messing and less battery power loss, secondly, it gives you more functionality, like being able to use the front wheel to control your aperture or ISO or shutter speed. Also check the record button on the gimbal as it's like a shutter button with a half press mode. You need to press it slightly harder for it to switch on and off the recording.
@kieranhayesphotography I did sir (without realising it was you again here - sorry about that!) I'll look for the email, but part of my failing appears to be me underestimating how hard the 2nd press works. I've now got record working on the gimbal. I'll bash on! Thank you so much for your swift response....you've saved me some grey hairs....I've been reading everything and getting nowhere 😂
@@Martinwhynot No problem at all Martin, if you want the front wheel to work then you will have to go with the wired control option unfortunately. TBH I much prefer the wired option as my camera is usually on airplane mode to conserve battery power. Interested to hear if you tried the settings I suggested for the gimbal speed dead and etc... and how it worked for you. It's a great little gimbal though.
I have tried a few different cooling fans and they do help. I will do a part three to this video on a few weeks with another slight modification that's super easy to do and won't affect warranties etc and also talk about the cooling fan too and hopefully I will have enough reliable data then to show direct comparisons and how much of an impact they have had.
Thanks for the amazing review! What exactly do you mean : "135 Watts cause its powered via mains" ? It cant never go to 150 watts in any case scenario? Wich would be a real deal breaker. I mean....why advertise 150watts when you cant pass the 135watt mark, maybe im not understanding this correctly ... Thanks in advance.
Hi, it's a 150watt unit but some of that energy is not converted into light so it's really 135watts light output. It's one of the reasons I always look at the light output on lights especially RGB lights. A good few companies do this, it's one of the reasons I mentioned it in the review. I hope that helps clarify it a small bit. It's the LUX output is the real measure and in my mind there should be a standard measurement for that also. At least we can directly compare them then.
For the price it would be way better to get a Nikkor 600 f4 IF-ED AI-s or a 800 5.6 IF-ED AI-s and a monopod and gimble. Even a 400 3.5 IF-ED AI-s with a TC-14 b would give you better sharpness and speed. Or a manual focus 500 F4.0 IF-ED P or even a Nikkor 600 5.6 IF-ED AI-s.. If your using a modern body you still get image stabilization and focus peaking.
That all depends what you are using it for I guess. Personally I wouldn't buy any of those lenses but I am sure they would be right for a good few people. I am no wildlife shooter and the varifocal aspect of this lens is what drew me to it. As I always say we all use our gear differently and these are just my thoughts on it.
@@gregoryrogalsky6937 please don't get me wrong, I respect your thoughts on it just explaining why I think it's a great lens. If I were very big into wildlife or sports photography I would probably see it through different eyes. Have a great week 👍
I am sorry, your videos look like they are just what I need BUT , your rate of speech plus your accent plus my age and hearing make it all unhearable ? I am hoping you may have heard of this problem and know of a remedy ???, I look forward to your reply , thanks a lot
Hello Norman, Sorry but my accent is a bit strong depending on where you live in the world of course so there is no real solution to that sadly. You could try Jim Nix maybe as he has a lot of videos on Luminar Neo also and his accent is far more neutral. Good luck and enjoy Neo.
Problem here is the crappy cooling "system" of the Z8. There are only small connections to the case and this can't be "fixed". It will bottleneck the heat. This metal plate will help but not as much as someone hopes. Using thermal paste is not preferred! And I think it may evaporates over time and/or crawls deeper into the camera. If you need to shot in 8K than use a Z9. There you have a proper magnesia body connected to the CPU and card slots. Sorry but you can't "fix" the Z8 without a bigger modification.
Hey David, thanks for the input, just to clarify I never said this was a fix but something that would help and it does help. Hence the long video and all the recordings showing the time increases. There is no fix as it's a design issue more than anything else as you say and as I pointed out in the videos. Yes, the Z9 is better for long runs and has better heat dissipation but I don't like the larger form factor and I am mainly a photographer that does video on the side so I don't need long video runs. This was just me explaining how to get better times for people that may need it. Which does work btw as the video clearly shows, it's also the second step in reducing the heat as I have posted another video before and I have a third step coming soon. You might not be aware but this also happens to people shooting in burst mode in areas of high ambient temps and the plate seriously helps there too. On the point about thermal paste running deep into the camera, that won't happen, it's not that viscous. Thermal paste doesn't run and there isn't that much of it there anyway. Enjoy the Z9 and have a great day.
I have a good few demos of editing up in both of these platforms. This was just me sharing my opinion on both of them as I get asked regularly which one to choose. So now I have a video to point people too 😉 I am sure you will find hundreds of videos directly comparing them so good luck.
Would this be mountable on an action camera with a cage that has a cold shoe mount on the top? The biggest concern would be is since it looks like you have to put it on longways that it could overhang and get into the picture.
Are you looking to mount the mic on the action camera or the receiver? If it's the mic then I am guessing then I am guessing you would also want to use the windshield so i would think that is almost certainly going to show in the video then. The receiver would possibly be ok depending on the cage and the camera of course. Then again you don't have to use the receiver as you can record on the mics internal memeory and pair it in post then.
@@kieranhayesphotography Will be mounting the receiver on it and just pinning the mics eithers on myself or other subjects. I think this will work ok but if for whatever reason it doesn't, then I can just use internal recording.
Cos I can't subscribe lightroom in my country, I have hacked LC and it's working perfect. I bought luminar neo and it's crushing all the time , not even skylim knows why so I uninstalled it .money ? AHH , they buy them coffee free from me.
Hi, You won't fit a VND filter inside the Matte Box, now it's possible to mount one on the lens and mount the matte box to that but I wouldn't recommend that for a few reasons, SmallRig has a unit with a builtin VND filter, it's not cheap though.
I know this vid is old but, I just got my Z6ii today. As well as the Smallrig cage and grip (regular not wood, though that is nice). I'm stocked! I had to get a converter though. I found your video because I thought I was doing something wrong with the cage not fitting. I knew it was me. Did a quick search and found this vid. I have never seen a setup like this and I want EVERYTHING you have! LOL I'm an actor and looking to start filming shorts and the like. And this is perfect! Thanks so much for creating the vid. And yes, it was me. I thought I might have to remove the hooks for a strap. Glad I know not to do until I'm sure. Whew! LOL :) SUB!
Hi, Thanks for watching and for the feedback and good luck with the acting, that's a great profession to be in. Shorts are the way forward alright and I hope that goes well for you. The beauty of video rigs is you can build them slowly when you have the spare money and time to do it.
@@kieranhayesphotography Oh wow, thanks for responding! I wasn't expecting that. Yes, I checked out all of your stuff and put it on my Amazon wish list. LOL I have to wait though because I just got the Z6ii, the SmallRig cage, side grip (not wooden like yours though I will have that one; can't beat that quick release) and converter to use my F lenses. Before that I got the Zhiyun Crane 4 w/accessories and the Ulanzi TreeRoot carbon fiber tripod as well. So, my budget is now done! LOL I'll be leaving for Iceland soon and look forward to using all this gear for great shots and video. I really do think SmallRig is the way to go. This cage and grip quality is very impressive! Now, I don't type all that to brag. I got lucky with things. I type all that to just express my excitement and passion for, whatever is about to come. I will be checking out more of your vids on the flight. Again, so freakin' helpful in the most simplest of ways.
@@outofthecommonphotography5503 You are definitely on the way to creating a nice rig there and with the gimbal and tripod your wallet must be feeling the squeeze alright 🙂 Enjoy Iceland it's an incredible country and so beautiful, it's the only other country I have gone too and thought I could live here. It would have to take something special to get me to move from Ireland though. I was always a big SmallRig fan the build quality is great and fr a reasonable price it's very hard to beat. If you want to save yourself a bit more money check out the Neewer range of camera accessories, same build quality and it's cheaper so win win 🙂 Anyway enjoy the trip and the new gear.
Almost a perfect review - but I shoot events and nightclubs with a DSLR - and I need to know how bright and effective the Autofocus assist beam actually is. Is it as good as Canon's?
@@kieranhayesphotography Ok - but how good is it? How bright is it? What does the pattern look like? How does it compare to your Nikons? How does it compare to other 3rd party flashes you own? (Every third party flash I have has shitty autofocus assist - the beam is weak and they have weird geometric patterns rather than a single bright bar for the autofocus to lock on to.)
Hi, you can use the Neewer V-mount batteries with the Neewer MS150 and MS60 video light via the Neewer NC010 D-Tap to DC connecting cable which connects to the D-tap connection. I hope that helps.
You're very welcome and thanks for watching. It's always something I have looked for in a review when I was buying video lights before and strangely enough most people don't cover it.
I have a z6ii, and i do weddings, and now I consider to upgrade to z8 or z7ii, but I want to do videos for weddings in the same camera. Probably going with the z8 then.
Hi for what you need the Z8 is is going to be a good bit better, the focus abilities of the Z8 are a lot better than the Z7ii, especially in lower light situations. From the video perspective again the Z8 is going to be a good bit better. In saying that I shoot all my youtube videos on the Z7ii now and does an amazing job. If I were you though I would go for the Z8 and just make sure to get a good CF express type B card for it as the cheaper ones get hot quickly. Thanks for watching and enjoy which ever camera you go for.
Exactly, I loved that, it's great if you loose your subject you can zoom out quickly and find them again and zoom back in with the flic of a wrist. Cracking lens.
Very true, that would certainly solve the overheating issue but I personally don't like the size of the Z9 it's too bulky to be hand holding for 6 to 8 hours a day. I tried it and wanted to use it but I waited for the Z8 and I much prefer it's shape size and weight. Funnily as I live in Ireland I don't have a lot of issues with the camera overheating so this video is more for other people than me :-)
@@kieranhayesphotography yea if you dont record any videos then nothing to worry about, but just depends if youd rather have it overheat during a project, or you rather deal with bulkier camera
@@CincyPhotography thankfully all of my video recordings are short enough. 20 minute clips at a time which is no issue. Not knocking the Z9 at all but I am mainly a photographer that shoots some bts stuff for companies and the Z8 does a great job for that.
23:26 I think you got it "slightly" wrong, mate. 😆😆😆 Vibration Reduction in Z series of Nikon mirrorless cameras is actually 5-axis in-body sensor stabilization. In other words it is the sensor that moves slightly along 5 axis to compensate for shakes. Electronic Vibration Reduction, (which is available, by the way, only in Movie mode and in Movie menu) is basically cropping of the image which is done "on the fly" when camera slightly crops image on any given side depending on the direction of a shake. Nikkor Z-series lenses for FULL-frame Z cameras DO NOT HAVE in-lens Vibration Reduction. Nikkor Z-series lenses for CROP-sensor cameras (Z30, Z50) do have in-lens Vibration Reduction. That's because Z-series crop-sensor cameras from Nikon DO NOT have in-body 5-axis sensor stabilization (IBIS). As for the old F-mount lenses - if you use them on Z-body with FTZ adapter, AND the lens have its own Vibration Reduction, then the IBIS is simply immobilized and the option for Vibration Reduction in i-menu is simply grayed out.
Exactly, this was a late night recording and I mixed the two up completely, totally my fault. Still not sure how I managed that, then again I also did a full video where I called DJI DHI and I have like 8 of their products. As I said to the others commenting, that's what you get for rushing a video. Recording videos is only a hobby for me and tbh I just didn't have enough time for it. Never thought that video would be so popular. I will do a proper one soon and spend more time at it. I will delete this one then.
@@kieranhayesphotography No worries, mate. We all do mistakes. Besides the world of digital video recording, editing, colour correcting, encoding...well, it's just a science in its own right. 😁
@@kieranhayesphotography I was actually wrong myself while saying that full-frame Z lenses don't have in-lens Vibration Reduction. Some of the do! 😆😆😆 Like Nikkor Z 24-200, for instance. And and the in-lens VR doesn't replace the functioning of IBIS. They work together, as far as I could understand. It only should be set to Normal within the camera. See, I was too hasty myself, while making conclusions. Should've looked at Nikon's website first. 😆😆😆😆 Sorry.
Your channel is great! I came from your video about the Neewer follow focus, and stayed for the one take presentational goodness and Irish accent. 😂 Love from Down Under. ❤
@@kieranhayesphotographySome Aussies do struggle with certain Irish accents but I grew up watching a lot of stuff from the "art" channels, so in all sorts of languages and accents and when I was a late teenager I discovered Tommy Tiernan and watched as much of him as I could get my hands on haha.
Everything fine BUT: electronic VR is NOT ibis!!!! It crops in a little bit and shifts the picture electronically to stabilize it. The normal VR is IBIS and, if in the lens, combined with this also!!!! Electronic VR can also be done in post, where you also can see, that it crops in according to the amount of electronic VR, that you choose to apply!
Hello Stephen, sorry yes you are totally right, I made a mess of that as I completely rushed the video and only when it was up did I realise my mistake, that's what happens when you work on something very late at night after a long shoot and completely feck it up. I have planned on doing an update to that video and correcting my stupid mistake but I just can't find the time for it atm.
Hi Jeremy thanks for the feedback, I was just expressing my thoughts on them and how they have worked for me, I have loads of videos on editing software on my channel and if I went through all the features of both of these platforms that video would have been a lot longer. It's one of the most common questions I am asked so I put up an answer out there to help people out. I am sure you will find loads of other videos out there on the topic so continued luck to you on your search.
Hello, thanks for watching. The Neewer Q4 uses the Q wireless system so you need to use the QPro trigger to control it. The N1T-S won't work on it sadly.
