if you read Tyler's autobiography he talks about his vocals on the first record. he regrets singing that way. I can't remember WHY he sang that way but he was going for something and realized later it sounded weird. it was not his natural voice.

@@thoonalia I choose CD because they’re really cheaper, do not degrade and are very easy to take care of. I understand the beauty of Vinyl especially because of the big artwork and the ceremonial aspect of it, but it requires a big budget because it is a somewhat obsolete medium.

Very enjoyable watch. Your first two picks were spot on, although I prefer different albums by a lot of these bands. I'd go for 'Dog Eat Dog', 'Long, Cold Winter', 'Crazy Nights' and 'Dr. Feelgood'. Dokken and Skid Row were bang on too, though. I love 'Slave to the Grind', but the debut is shorter and sharper. My only disappointment is that Enuff Z'Nuff never get a mention on these lists. Such a great fucking band.

Nice review! I've been following Aerosmith for decades. my opinions from least Favorite, to FAVORITE, and I respect those who disagree... 15) MUSIC FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION - grade D - should be called Music Without Testosterone, because it sounds like Steven is about to cry his heart out on every song, or being sensitive, feminine and kinky all at the same time. If that's what your looking for in an album, it might just be an A+ 14) HONKIN' ON BOBO' - grade C - their one original song 'The Grind' is pure sap, doesn't rock as well as the blues remakes, i can't stand the ear splitting guitars on 'Road Runner' opening the albums, makes me want to turn the volume down way low ... This does remind me of the Rolling Stones, but I'm not a huge Stone fan. I'm a huge Aerosmith fan. Just doesn't sound like Aerosmith to me! 13) NIGHT IN THE RUTS - grade B - (would have been great had J.Perry not left. Actually, Joe and Steven were the only members to write songs for this one. everyone else flunked song writing and they filled covers and earlier rejects like Reefer Headed Woman) 1/2 of a great album, the rest is poor filler... the great stuff: Remember, Cheese Cake, Chiquita, Three Mile Smile, Think About It, and No Surprise is good, but doesn't rock hard enough to be an opening track for the album 12) JUST PUSH PLAY - grade B - [this rocks, even if it's mostly love songs] I give it a pass whenever I'm in for balladry, check out Jaded, Sunshine, Beyond Beautiful, Light Inside and Avant Garden, the rest is corn syrup, or worse 11) GET A GRIP - grade B - [the ballads trio: Cryin' Crazy and Amazing aren't as good as Nine Lives ballad trio 'Ain't That a Bitch', 'Kiss Your Past Goodbye' and 'Full Circle'." 10) NINE LIVES - grade B - [also better than G.A.G. due to the fantastic Falling In Love is Hard on the Knees, much better than 'Livin' On The Edge'] 9) PUMP - grade B+ - (their most over rated album, and also when they started trying to earn Grammy's by being politically correct) 8) ROCK IN A HARD PLACE - grade A - (their most underrated. This held the band together, even if Brad and Joe weren't there, it was fantastic, and it sounds very 80s.. it's fast, well developed tunes, and fantastic production without producer enhanced sound additions. please listen to it! great tracks: hard rockin' in great form: Lighting Strikes, Title Track, Bitches Brew, Bolivian Ragamuffin, plus to experimental sounding Prelude to Joanie, Joanie's Butterfly, plus the speed bash opener Jailbait... Jig Is Up is good too, and the only disappointment is Push Comes To Shove, which sounds drunk like Reefer Headed Woman on N.I.T.R., and one other: Cry Me A River, is a superb ballad remake, unlike the corn syrup ballads of their later albums. get this one for sure! ] 7) AEROSMITH - grade A - much discussed, so I will skip 6) GET YOUR WINGS - grade A - much discussed, so I will skip 5) DONE WITH MIRRORS - grade A - there most macho album, like a sirloin stake seasoned with salt and pepper, and that's it! zero choruses, zero horns, zero producer added sound effects.. just heavy bluesy guitars, drums and Steven Tyler belting it out in bravado. I think they used this formula for P.V., but some choruses and horns on the hit singles, plus the guitars on P.V. were out in orbit metal sounding ear candy. They did have a couple of top 40 rock radio singles: Let The Music Do The Talking (and their finest music video to date!) and also Shela. They abandoned the tour and support for the album early to focus on recording a followup, in the wake of their MTV hit with Run DMC covering Walk This Way. And less than two years later their ultimate masterpiece, and the 80s ultimate "metal" album would be released. I use the word "metal" loosely, as was done in the 80s to describe a plethora of bands, and I definitely don't mean to imply thrash. 4) ROCKS -grade A+ - , because every song does. The production is also perfectly balanced, without any instruments or even Steven standing out in front. That results in a very studio sound, which is why I rank it below Draw The Line, though the songs have more character and development on this album, ROCKS 3) DRAW THE LINE - grade A+ - because it rocks, though slower than the album named rocks, it's grittier, rawer and less rehearsed sounding, and nothing can beat 'Kings And Queens' 2) TOYS IN THE ATTIC - grade A+ - perfection in song writing, with a wide range of musical genres, from songs the rolling stones could have recorded, like Adams Apple, Uncle Salty and No More No More, to the heavy tracks like Sweet Emotion, Round and Round and Title Track, to the epic balladry to You See Me Cryin, to the pure Aerosmith innovation of Walk This Way, to the funny blues cover jig of Big Ten Inch Record. This is an epic recording, though I love listening to other grade A or better albums more, I gotta give them credit where credit is deserved.. Toys! 1) PERMANENT VACATION - grade A++ - (my favorite album period, I give them an extra plus) first it's got several hit singles, of which they are great, but even without them the album would be grade A+, that's because the rest of the album really rocks! It's got the definitive 80s metal sound, and executed better than by Aerosmith, a dark cosmic bravado of coolness haunts to the metalesque tracks of Hearts Done Time, Magic Touch, Simoriah and The Movie. The weakest song is actually pretty good, the 60s cover of the Beetles' I'm Down, which they amp up to 80s metal perfection, still great. And, there are other 60s style rock songs amped up to 80s metal energy: the title track, written in house by Brad and Steven, with the amazing predictive analysis of the bands future when Steven declares in the middle of the song "I've got this sister man she's really got a pinhead, she think she's kinky but can't get it straight" which perfectly describes their latest 2012 album M.F.A.D. which is soft, sensitive and kinky all the way though.. and to other lesser degrees you can hear the kinky sister of Aerosmith gaining control over the band, even during some of PUMP. back to Permanent Vacation: another 60s style track amped up to 80s metal bravado is 'Girl Keeps Coming Apart' written by Joe and Steven in house. Another layer of song writing evident in Permanent Vacation is the heavy blues, amped up into 80s metal eruption, and those tracks include the powerhouse rocker "Hangman Jury", and also, "St. John" which is actually the final song Steven Tyler wrote by himself, in 1987, sad because it's sound a powerful and cool tune. He should have kept at it!!
