I'm a retired physician and inveterate do-it-yourselfer. I hate throwing things away because we can't fix them. This channel will share some of my quick fixes that both save money and keep stuff out of landfill.

George, thank you very much for your video posted 3 years ago. One of my living room Hunter Douglas UltraGlide2 shades (installed in 2015) stopped working this year (2024), the problem is the exact same as what you described here. After watching the video many times, I took the plunge, disassembled the clutch, drilled a 1/8” hole, and solved the problem with a screw I found at home. Perfect fix and probably stronger than the original. Thanks again, Allen in Toronto.

Thank you for the great tips! Yes greater toe room! Expressed this need to my flooring contractor before seeing this video and they were baffled by the idea - focused on vanities that float or have legs. How much further would you recess the toe kick on a 20” deep vanity. How much further did you recess your toe kicks. Is there a ratio?

Just wondering, With the shower controls located outside of the shower, means that the water will continue to run while you are exiting the shower....I am concerned about Safety . Just sayin

Great ideas. 2 things I noticed 1. Barn doors. Last resort as smells and steam can get through them. 2. Don’t do a double sink if there is no bench space afterwards. Best to have 1 sink with more bench space for items. No reason for double-sinks in most circumstances unless you have plenty of space.
@grandpajohnshandypersoncha8298
Agree with the barn doors. I needed it for a walk-in closet off the bathroom. Certainly would not use it as an entryway. As far as the double sinks, we had the space and a prolific family! Thanks

Thank you so much! I'm about to start my renovations, all 3, next week. And your tips is about along the line with our plan :) QUESION: I see that all of your vanities don't have backsplash, which is what I plan for all of ours bathrooms as well. I think those look dated. However the comments that I got from the contractor is that water might get to the dry wall when we clean. And the drywall might get damaged overtime. He suggest that we might have to use outdoor paint or tile those wall (my preference) . Would you have any suggestions? I'm think the plywood backing is a great idea! Thank you in advanced.

Thanks! I'll disagree on the barn door for the room entrance though, they're bad at sound and odor containment!

Love the video. I notice you have a heated towel rack and wondered if your's actually got the towels warm. I've read quite a few complaints on certain brands that are not very effective. I am considering using the ones that heat it with water and having a tankless heater on it. Just thought you might have some good insite on it. Thanks for the help!! Again really enjoyed the video and now think I'm going to recess all toe kicks and add under lighting on them all even in kithen as night lights in the new house we are going to build. I'm also going to add recessed toilet paper holder because it never seems to be enough room for the traditional ones.
@grandpajohnshandypersoncha8298
The towel warmers do work and I have them on timers. Having said that, we’ve probably only used the heat 3 or 4 times in 5 years. They do a good job for hanging the towels on! Nice touch for the under cabinet lighting. I think I would have done that in retrospect.

If you mean bidet toilets and toilets with bidet seats, they're becoming much more common (in the US at least), especially after the great Covid toilet paper shortage.

Do you do your own tile work?
@grandpajohnshandypersoncha8298
If I am installing small tiles, I do it myself. If they are the big ones ( e.g. 12” x 30”) I have a great tiler to do it. The larger the tile, the more likely there will be levelling errors. Having said that I always apply two coats so sealer.

Great suggestions and great work on your bathrooms! I've done a couple of my own (mostly DIY) and had some challenges. My own suggestions: 1) Research your products as much as you can before purchasing 2) Plan your layout thoroughly to avoid awkward placement of fixtures, trim etc 3) Similar to above , but pertains specifically to showers - plan your niche placement and think of the size of tile to be used & pattern so that it's balanced and doesn't look like it was randomly placed there with small cuts of tile on the sides.
@grandpajohnshandypersoncha8298
These are all excellent suggestions. I agree with you with regards to the fixtures. I have them all on hand when I start recreating the bathroom. For the niche placement I use a 5’4” woman to tell me the best height placement and generally place the 12” wide niche in the exact Centre of the wall.

what other projects have you done in the home? I have been working on renewing a bathroom for months. it is so hard, did you hire a plumber to help? how did you know how to do all the plumbing?
@grandpajohnshandypersoncha8298
It is easier than you think. The waste side is just cutting and glueing things together. The supply side is much easier with PEX as long as you buy the crimper. If you have copper, you can just use a double compression fitting with a PEX adaptor. Then you can do everything in PEX.
@jaleynaziller
@jaleynaziller Год назад
@@grandpajohnshandypersoncha8298 everything in this house is copper and I am not good with either copper or PEX. that's amazing that you have all those skills. I did all the demo, all the water proofing and tiling and plastering etc. but not the plumbing or electric. Amazing. You have skills.

Lovely bathrooms. I agree about always having a bidet. I am having a combo WC/bidet installed in a new house here in Italy as I want a larger shower. Space is at a premium here. Also miss having studs in walls to make those nice niches for shampoos and other shower products. Kinda hard to do when everything is built with brick or stone.

Pro/ Con of bidet vs new toilets with built in bidets?
@grandpajohnshandypersoncha8298
I’m a retired gastroenterologist so a bidet is best if you have the room. However, the bidet seats (sold separately from the toilets) are very good. Check out Consumers Reports before you buy, and get one with a high potential pressure. Definitely Don’t buy one that does not augment the supply water pressure.

We've had the same issue with 2 blinds and this time I wanted to fix it myself. This video was immensely helpful! I had a little trouble with the spring popping out and I had to re-thread the whole thing 3 times which was a little crazy. I'd recommend anyone who attempts this be super careful with the string and the locking mechanism too. In the end, I got it done.
@grandpajohnshandypersoncha8298
Glad it helped!
