Yeah, good question. Generally I think I lean towards split files for notes but single file for tracking todos. I do have one huge file for personal notes but that's mainly because I generate a website from it and it was easiest to set up from one file.
Hi Jake, thank you for the video, it was very clear. I like reveal, and would like to use the plugins it has ( namely blackboard and slide sound recording). Have you played with plugins? thank you
Fantastic video! For me C-x C-t goes right to TODO without a prompt for state. How did you configure that? Also, I think init.el assumes a .emacs.d directory in your home, otherwise I think it's just .emacs. I'd love to see a video on how to break up org-mode content across files. I make one per day, but it gets unwieldy and I end up with the same todo items in multiple files, which breaks org-agenda with lots of redundancy. I'm sure there are multiple strategies here, but I'd love your thoughts. Thanks!
Thank you! Did you mean C-c C-t? In that case perhaps it is because you don't have any alternative keywords set. You can either set the `org-todo-keywords` variable or, at the top of your org file, see this: orgmode.org/manual/Per_002dfile-keywords.html Now about init.el that sounds right, I have never used a .emacs file because I tend to have more files and whatnot. Re breaking up org content, it's really a personal choice. You're right I definitely should do a video on this topic. There are many tools out there to help, perhaps 'denote' might be up your alley. Must avoid same todos in multiple places though!!
Just found your channel after watching your keynote at EmacsConf. Loving it! As a noob, I especially like the straightforward part. Question about your Dropbox implementation -- how did you set that up? And do you save all your files right into Dropbox and work on them from there? I'm getting a ThinkPad for emacs use and want to be to access the same files as on my desktop. Thanks again!
Oh, great! Glad you like it! The Dropbox is pretty simple. I just keep all of my Emacs related stuff in Dropbox. I then make a symlink from an Emacs configuration folder to my home directory. There are apps that help you do this, I use one called Mackup but I believe there are others. It has worked well for me, you just need to symlink once and then any change you make on one device will propagate to the other thanks to Dropbox. Let me know if you have any more questions.
@@JakeBox0 Thanks for the reply. I've never heard of symlink, but it sounds like that could be my ticket. I'll look for a Linux app that can do that. Would it also work with GDrive? And would that also make the folder accessible on multiple devices, which is what I really want?
@@BobIrving2 Symlinks can be created with the `ln` command. Google Drive I imagine would work the same, unsure how it looks locally but for my drive I can just cd in to the directory.
Not sure YASnippet gives much to my particular workflow (of course that's just me), but I did want to leave a note of appreciation for the video, it was a good explanation of the package and very informative. I agree with the other commenters on the video style being quite preferable to the majority of emacs related content I've seen. Excellent work, and I look forward to more.
Is there an editor that lets me edit the equations real-time like in word, at least a symbols tab would be appreciated, I cannot stand having to constantly hit "altgr+some key" to get the stupid slashes, carets... and all the stuff required? As it stands right now, I don't see myself ever switching from word, even though LaTeX looks much nicer word is just so much faster.
There are websites that let you enter equations using calculator-like buttons and will give you the corresponding latex code to copy and paste into your editor. Just Google something like "latex equation editor"
Holy moly! You're so close to where I am! Another fellow CS student too! This was awesome. I also found the manual at first to be daunting, especially from the lack of examples for some specific things. Though it may be obvious to me now, it certainly wasn't then, when I was a stranger to Linux and the terminal.
Hi Jake, your videos are among the best Emacs tutorials that I have ever seen. You really have a talent for explaining things in simply straightforward ways. I thank you sincerely and wish you keep on your great work. All the Best!
Thank you so much for the kind words, it means a lot and I really appreciate it. All the best to you as well. Let me know if you have any video requests.
Hi, do you mean right when the file is saved? If so, there isn't a way that I'm familiar with but it shouldn't be too hard to work out if you're interested. You'd want to automatically generate LaTeX on save (easy with a hook or something), and then use something like latexmk to automatically compile and preview the changed LaTeX file. Good luck, report back if you come up with something. I could also attempt a little guide/package if there is interest.
Hi, jake. How can you have the same color individually for each level of headings in org-mode? When I set ellipse like "(setq org-ellipse "x"), the color becomes the same for all levels of headings.. NO!!!
Hi, I'm not entirely sure but I think it generally has something to do with the order in which things are loaded. Try doing that before and after loading a theme and see if it helps.
I just saw your presentation at EmacsConf2023. I really enjoyed it and found it inspiring! I'm a subscriber and big fan of your videos. This video specifically inspired me to get into making my Org documents gorgeous when exported PDF, and turned me into an admirer of the whole TeX ecosystem, thanks!
1:09 how did you clock in and clock out , what keys did you press here , I did not see any keys getting triggered in bottom row. are you using a macro pad or stream deck to issue commands ? 1:20 what keys did you press to manually adjust the clocked timestamp as for me the interval does not auto update ? EDIT : SHIFT up / down , worked for me for adjusting the timestamp.
Good video. Been retired from IT for a few years and want to get back into programming. I started my career as a COBOL programmer. Found emacs and like the functionality and flexibility! Started configurations with System Crafters, but also want to find other alternatives. Will review your configuration and see what I can use.
Thanks for publishing this, it's very useful for my own config, especially save place and simpleclip which I had no idea about, aswell as the hydra window management config.
