CareTakers is a documentary film project about South Africa's rich natural heritage, and the dedicated people who care for it.

In the face of overwhelming biodiversity loss, habitat degradation, and human-induced climate change, there is a pressing need for clear calls to effective action. These films are intended to educate, advocate and inspire people to become active parts of the solution.

The Snoek of False Bay used to come into the Bay in Big Numbers: From the Agulhas Banks: From October . Why ? Because October, is the month that the warm Agulhas Current would push into and cross the Agulhas Banks. The warm water push drives the Snoek into Slangkop to the Bellows, and Rocky Bank. Unfortunately the "Trawlers" have decimated the Breeding Stock. The Trawler also target Snoek on the western 200 meter side of the Agulhas Bank. 1998 to 2002 the Trawlers killed the Breeding Stock of Snoek: On South Bank: The Trawlers Targeted the Snoek. This is why the Snoek Biomass and Breeding Stock have now collapsed along the South African coastlines of the West Coast and Agulhas Banks.

I had the pleasure to visit the Rictersveld in 2002 on a botanical outing, it was life changing. After 120 rolls of photographs mostly shot in stereo I often look at them and can almost feel the heat, wind and smell the air, especially when rain or fog appeared. Absolutely magical, I know the excitement young James is feeling, at 66 i get that excited still. I wonder if the bulbine was ever identified as a new species, theres probably no greater thrill then finding a new species and I hope it came true for young James. Thanks for the hike, I almost felt i was there, cheers Ernst, I have your book on gasterias and met you in Tuson Arizona in 2009. Keep truckin man

Reef species are not a sustainable source of revenue generating fish. They simply cannot reproduce and grow fast enough to maintain the rate at which they are removed from the water. FACT. Perhaps there should be a move to commercial farming of suitable species - such as cob and potentially other molluscs such as oysters and mussels.

The problem is nobody wants to eat the prickly pear leaves plant raw it just doesn't taste like anything. You're supposed take the thorns out of the tender plant leaves, score leaves top to bottom and them left to right, salt them very lightly, let them cook for a few minutes on both sides with a charcoal or propane grill outside or inside on griddle until soft then put them in any kind of beans or by themselves, add some mild or hot homemade salsa and you got yourself once of the best tasting, low cost and nutritious meals you can ever have. Put mixture inside local corn or flour flat bread variety for even better results😉 . Give it a few years to catch on and there is no invasion just plenty of well fed people.

Many people found themselves in the battlefield against Apartheid. Not because of politics but due to its oppressive and violent nature. It was an attempt to strip people of their dignity and humanity. But here you find Oom Koos and his indomitable spirit. He has a wealth of indigenous knowledge. A walking encyclopaedia of Karoo botanical knowledge.
