I can see a lot of people in the comments thought it was just one fox. The first one was a very clearly younger fox; the fox that came after is an older fox, one that's clearly been around the block a few times. The cat made a wise decision leaving when it did.
Being fair, the fox is smart in this case. Even if they are able to kill a cat - chances are that cat will do some serious damage to them before they manage to take it down. Animals that needlessly take wounds in a needless fight die. It's one of the reasons cats confidence is so powerful when keeping other animals away - they're making their stance clear - whatever another creature tries won't be worth the trouble, pick an easier fight or face the mittens of fury.
The fox has a pregnant mate or one who stays in the den with young pups. That’s the reason for trying to take back enough food for the family. That’s what is so sad if anything ever happens to a male fox, because the female ends up losing her pups from other foxes or some thing else whilst trying to feed herself, or else ends up starving with her pups. A male fox literally feeds the whole family until the pups can leave the den with mum.
