I’m not a Paper Mario fan but apparently the original commercial for Thousand Year Door had some music from Hans Zimmer called “You’re So Cool” which was a song used in Tony Scott’s True Romance which is a classic crime thriller. Though shortly Morgan Creek dropped the case six days later, after Nintendo revealed that the advertising agency, Leo Burnett USA, Inc., had licensing for the song.
I think this is the best Origami King review out there! It’s clear, realistic about the game’s issues, and most importantly, excited about what the game gets right. Sad to hear about the online infighting. Even as a classic fan, I had no patience for arguing about/making silly comparisons to TTYD (especially as I always preferred PM64) so I never paid much attention to what was said online. Never heard of Bug Fables until now, I’m glad it did well, it looks cool!
I remember playing this game when it came out in 2020 and honestly I only bought the game because I wanted to play a new Switch game and I played it and I enjoyed it but then other more appealing game releases were coming out like Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Returnal just to name a few. I guess Paper Mario is one of those game series that I just can’t get into due to the series having some pretty off brand characters and stories that feel really out of place for a Mario game. The closest I came to liking a Paper Mario game was Super Paper Mario because that game played more like a platformer which is a genre I’m very familiar with but unfortunately it still keeps some of off-brand aspects in terms of characters and story.
I disagree, Byleth in Smash is NOT really that disappointing. I think Byleth is just fine, but hey at least we didn't have the really awful Gen 8 Pokemon in Smash.
I honestly can’t believe it’s already about to be five years since this controversy happen because honestly looking back at Byleth’s reveal while I think some of the disappointment for Byleth is justified I also think some of it I think is a little extreme because something that people don’t seem to realize with Fire Emblem is that the series is massive in Japan whereas in the west while it definitely has its fans it is must certainly one of Nintendo’s more niche franchises. Also I wish Red Guy wasn’t so close minded to other game series because I love Mario but Nintendo has so many other great franchises that are just as good.

Honestly I used to be more in the TTYD camp, never like toxic but definitely a preference. I never hated TOK but almost randomly I've been hit with this big soft spot for the game and tbh I really like it. I think it's just that now that we have Mario RPGs proper back, I just don't care about TOK's faults in that regard anymore and only see the positives (tbf it helps that I actually like the ring).
Im still hoping we can get a similar restructure of color splash later down the line. Maybe oragami king too, but color splash is the more priority. But as they say "beggars can't be choosers."

everybody in the paper mario fandom constsntly complains about the lack of enemy health bars and how its impossible to strategize without them, but the mario and luigi series has never once shown enemy health and nobody has ever complained about that once

@46:19 I wholeheartedly disagree with this statement. Sure, this story is "good", but it does not fit the franchise. Using Mario as a Vehicle for THIS story does not add anything to "Mario". The franchise characters are just there to sell the product.. and they function as an spectator to the narrative and nothing else! The clashing tone is also a problem. And there's probably a reason why this hasn't really been replicated since. It also destroys the Paper Mario canon, which TTYD properly continued.. so there's no point in consistency for upcoming games any more. This brought more issues than necessary.. at the cost of a story that could have EASILY been told in a new Franchise. Not only was Nintendo incapable of seeing this, and creating a proper vessel for it. They continued to enforce the "Mario Restrictions" of not allowing their developers to use the franchise to the fullest! Requiring them to create weird creatures and nonsensical world-building that don't fit the mold of what Mario is. Why insist on making Mario something that it is not? Why grow in so many different directions when they lose all sense of identity and nothing matters afterwards? And with this game.. you have a non-Mario story with a non-PaperMario Combat? Why deceive expectations? There's no need at all.
SPM in general is a mixed bag because on one hand I kind of like the platformer style of gameplay that this game went for since I personally was never a fan of the RPG gameplay since I’ve always found it pretty boring and repetitive. But on the other hand this game unfortunately keeps the off brand aspect from previous Paper Mario games specifically TTYD because so many characters in this game look like nothing out of the Mario series and I seriously wish that Nintendo and Intelligent Systems just made new IP instead of slapping the Mario brand on this game which kind of effects this game’s story and really clashes badly in tone. Also I know this kind of an unpopular opinion but I’m really not a fan when Mario games have serious stories because while I don’t want the Mario series to be too standardized I also don’t want the Mario series too stray away too much from it’s identity because to me when it comes to storytelling in video games I prefer game series like Yakuza and Uncharted because while there different in terms of tone and age demographic what makes those stories work was that SEGA and Naughty Dog created character designs that are consistent with game’s tone and plot but SPM fells like a weird mishmash because you characters like Count Bleck who does go well with the game’s darker tone but once you put Mario characters into the story it kind of ruins the game’s tone in my opinion.
Do people really find the ending to Luigi’s Mansion sad because I always found it to be more funny than sad because Mario comes out of the Ghost Portrificationizer his head stuck and Luigi laughs at Mario. To me it feels like Nintendo’s intent was to have a happy funny ending but a sad ending I don’t think so.

I like to think that if your going in order of chapters, in chapter 3 specifically Char Cole would be holding a fireball in his hand to guide Mario and Goombarshal through the smog
Hey don’t know if you’ll see this on a 2 year old video. First off your analysis of this game was top notch and truly put to words all the reasons I disliked this game when I played when I was younger. Second if you still have yet to play any of the other Mario and Luigi games I highly recommend it those games carry the same loves le charm and story telling the original 3 paper Mario’s did, especially the first 3 Mario and Luigi games. I would also add that I believe the other two (super star saga and bowser inside story) are better then partners in time. Inside story actually being my favorite Mario game of all time. Those games truly blend the rpg genre with Mario characters in charm in a great way and any fan of paper Mario who has yet to play them should.
I honestly like Super Paper Mario the way it is Gameplay wise, the reason they made it change in the first place is Because it was once meant for the Game Cube, thus having two Games similar to each on the same Console... I honestly doubt that they would have liked the Game if it was looking lile a "Thousand Year Door Clone" I love Super Paper Mario for being Unique and I would honestly not really welcome it if they simply make it like PM2 because making it like PM2 still wont make it any better, maybe even worse in the worst case
2:19:34 It does make ne sad that you're correct, but the magic circles are my favorite thing about the game for some reason. I just wish they could've introduced something more with 1000 Fold Arms (like with that one moving platform in the last area, I haven't played the game in a while, but if I'm correct, the platform moving would make Mario peel the wall of even if the player wasn't doing anything, which could make for a great puzzle where it's maybe used against Mario, and another idea I came up with was the concept of having to turn Mario around to find something that might be behind him, which isn't much, but these 2 things would at least make the mechanic a bit more interesting) and I wish they at least gave us an explanation on what exactly they are. It's clear from dialogue with Olivia in IVM that they're created by someone when she notices someone left a mark unfinished, and at the start of the game, she says that a magic circle appearing has something to do with Olly, the Origami King himself even uses them in battle and is defeated with a way bigger one, yet we still don't know anything else about them, and considering the existence of the cafe's, they'd be a great spot to add some character who knows what they are. (Another thing, there's some running, although barely used, theme of the number 1000 and folding in Paper Mario. Maybe I'm just overthinking it, but in The _Thousand_ Year Door, the player gets abilities that fold them. Then in this game, the main magic circle is the _1000_ Fold Arms and the antagonist tries to use the _1000_ Crane Technique.)
Paper Jam also has the issues of removing enemy variety (of which Mario & Luigi had EVEN MORE than Paper Mario) and removing continuity with previous entries. So although the gameplay is in line with the rest of the Mario & Luigi games, the story and overall writing feels like... Sticker Star, again. Like it's some virus that infected Mario & Luigi as well.

i like the idea of toad and squirps as partners even though i perfer pixl becoming proper partners but except this 2 especially since if pixl were redone we lose 2. not on board francis i rather have mimi and she has disturbing transforming in paper mario history
As a classic fan who played bug fables and absolutely adored it, it was really upsetting to see how things went with the fandom infighting. I’m glad you mentioned it at the start! I don’t usually see people acknowledge how bad it got
This is a game I surprisingly have grown to love more and more as the years passed, even when I had a good first impression of it. Very good review that covered its plenty of good aspects while sharing the criticisms I have with it.
The game that made me lose interest in "Paper Mario". I was 12 years old when I first played this, and I found it boring and frustrating. There was no hinting of what to do next, and I grew tired of the cumbersome, counterintuitive battle system. Needless to say, I didn't play the next two instalments. But after playing TTYD on Switch, I'm considering giving "Paper Mario: The Origami King" a shot.
