I can’t wait to see what it’s going to look like when done. The wood you’re using for the top is different, for sure. But who knows how it will turn out. Since you perform magic with your builds, I’m sure you will make it look spectacular!

HI Dave .... another interesting and entertaining build. I really enjoy and appreciate all the work you put into making your projects and especially presenting them. Just a couple of thoughts from my end - I often wonder about the characteristics of various woods - e.g. whether some may have a tendency to split more easily than others because they may contain less oils etc., and therefore may not be as suitable as others for instument making. Luthiers often go on about humidity but there must be other factors? I must say it seemed a bit dodgy to use a waterbased glue on top of the 'plastic' super glue when you made your fillet repair - still looks like you may have got away with it. My personal preference for the top of the guitar would be to keep it very simple, even with the dolphin cut outs, but what ever you do will be really great to watch. Keep up the good work. All the best Terry
@DaveDickens
@DaveDickens День назад
Hi Terry thank you for your observations. Interesting what you say about woods. I don’t check moisture levels, I couldn’t control humidity even if I did and to be honest I’ve not seen any real effects. Perhaps now with much thinner wood it may cause problems. I’m not sure about oil content, it’s an interesting thought though. Yes you spotted a bit of a Dave moment with the CA glue. I did sand it down a little so fingers crossed it will hold. When I edit these videos I sometimes wonder what on earth was I thinking 😂 cheers Dave

Thinking outside the box - use black veneer dolphins on the top and put a sound hole on the side top bout. The Helmholtz resonance will be the same as if you had a soundhole in the top and the guitar will be stronger.

I don't see a problem with doing a traditional round sound hole. Why not cut out a circle from the walnut scrap and place it roughly where the sound hole should be to get an Idea of what it would look like. You could use some lighter color wood for the rosette. By just cutting out a circle of white paper for contrast you could get an idea of what it would look like.
@DaveDickens
@DaveDickens 2 дня назад
That’s a very good idea. I think I wanted to do something a little different and the Zebrano is the catalyst. I’ll be practicing on scraps to see if my idea is a goer. Cheers Dave
@robertr4193
@robertr4193 День назад
@@DaveDickens Here is another idea also. The guitar builder DaisyTempest who has a youtube channel uses antique paper for the rosettes when she builds her acoustic guitars. You could get a good quality acid free water color paper to cut out the rosette and sense it is a thicker paper go ahead and cut a channel for it to lay in and glue it in the channel and fill over the top to level and seal in with epoxy.

Well u know Dave I've come to notice something about guitar building and that being when mistakes happen finding creative ways to fix that mistake , and i think ur fix on the zebrano is a good way to fix it,i was just working on my all mahogany guitar this morning and was leveling the sides preparing then for binding and don't u know i sanded through a spot by mistake and ended up making what amounts to a plug and it worked just fine

Looking forward to this build. I wondered about the new, scratch built acoustic when you just stopped talking about it and finished rehabbing the old one. Watching the podcast now. I agree that the acoustic builds are a whole thing and that in comparison, electrics are child’s play. I’ve only built a few acoustics, but they were much more involved. I haven’t made enough to experiment with bracing alternatives, I’ve just chosen one and lived with it. I guess it introduces a kind of random element.
