What about keeping bugs a critters out of your kayak when stored? The last thing i want is for something undesirable to come crawling out while im on the water 😫
This is the kayak that I wish to get. I am 67” and 295 lbs. I am 71 and somewhat in active shape for my age. I am a nurse practitioner. I work FT in a prison in Bridgeport Texas. I pass over a fairly large lake daily. It is a reservoir for water for Tarrant County in DFW . It is active during summer with boaters and fishing! I am interested in neither. I am interested in kayaking for exercise and being out in the outdoors. My other interest is cycling and I have done this since childhood. I currently own several high end bikes. I have participated in many a century ride during the summer. I have watched you on you tube. My other you tube person that I watch is Matt of Two Feet Outdoors. He is fellow NewYorker. I will be contacting you soon to purchase a Eddyline Sandpiper 130. I am going to reacquaint my self with swimming. I will need life vest and paddle. Of course hat sunglasses water shoes etc! Probably need sump pump, dry bag. I want to get wife involved too. So I will get her the same stuff too. I wish to purchase everything from you also! I see you use PayPal. That is what I use also. Will be in touch soon…Mark.
Great review! Really wish you'd gotten some footage on the 140 solo as well though.. (I know I'm a year too late) are there any other benefits to the 140 except for more room? Seems like all the molle and acotty mounts become obsolete in it when solo. As an avid kayaker, do you think the 140 would handle well if one would take the front seat (positioned like in the 120) and have all the gear tied to the floor behind the seat? (I have the option of buying a new Chelan 140 for $500 though I'd probably fit better in the 120 being 5,11, 166lbs and not owning a car.. but it's $1000+)
I bought one in March. I would have to disagree with you. There are many areas this kayak falls short but the most important and reason I bought this budget pedal is the pedal drive. It's terrible, loud and clunky. I would not recommend this kayak and regret my purchase. I will have to wait and see if feel free comes out with an upgraded pedal drive for this kayak.
Like the compass! I’m 5’7” so your comment about shorter-armed paddler is taken to knuckle. I mean heart. Taken to heart…🥸 I’d love to try that puppy. Also the s14 (std volume). I love skegs. So, I’d go that route. Can’t always tell from POV cameras, but it seems acceleration is above average. Stellar is safely outside my price range. But, if I grow up….
I'm looking for a reasonably priced kayak or whatever where I can be able to have a good seat, add peddles and also row so I can maximize the exercise and switch out what I do to move it around. Would something like this sit too high out of the water to be able to effectively paddle?
My Kayak buddies laugh at me but I put an old beat up kids ski pole in my boat. That way I use the pole to push me off rocks and when grounded and when getting in and out. Last thing I want to do is break my Cannon Carbon Fiber paddle blade. We run rivers in Michigan and they have shallow spots.
ive been watching your channel for years. I went from a hobie passport to a pelican catch pwr to a kaku zulu. I'm a manlet at 5ft6 and weigh 140. I want to downsize in kayak weight and length. is the moken 10 pdl a well built kayak?. most importantly, is the pdl drive more reliable then the Chinese piece of garbage drive I currently have!
The bonus tip was worth sticking around! Thank you! Actually, the whole video was helpful. I keep going back and forth between the Sandpiper 130 and the Equinox. Is there a spray skirt that fits the 130? I don't love the high seat back on the 130. I also have a small dog that goes with me most of the time, so I like the idea of the longer cockpit for the dog and re-entry, but I like the Equinox because it would seem much easier to reach a deck bag without crawling (lol). From reviews the Equinox has better tracking and would be better for long days on the water. I'm short (5'2") and currently chunky, so I want a kayak that has plenty of capacity left over for camping gear and water. I paddle long days (usually) and need a comfortable seat. My only reference points have been a starter sit-on-top from Wal-Mart (the seat was more comfortable than the Sea Eagle), a Sea Eagle Razor Lite 393 with the single most uncomfortable seat I've ever experienced, and a Pungo 120 (borrowed from a friend). The Pungo has an incredibly comfortable seat and cozy thigh braces but only 1 bulkhead, and only 12'. Plus, it seems to plow rather than cut through the water. Sounds like the thigh braces on the Sandpiper 130 are more like knee rests? I typically kayak on large lakes that can get quite a bit of chop from wind and wake from big boats, small lakes and reservoirs, and slow rivers (maybe with a class I rapid). I occasionally travel to the coast, and would like to have the option of doing coastal areas and bays (but this is infrequent and not my primary paddling grounds). At this point, my thoughts are going in circles. (There's no where in AZ to test out either of them--sigh.) If anyone (including Dan) can provide any further insights, I'd appreciate it. Happy paddling, everyone!
really enjoy your channel and watching your videos, may get a loon one of these days. We have a couple perception sound 10.5 that we love. Mostly paddle on the North Platte river here in Wyoming
It would have been better if FeelFree just made a pedal drive to fit the Moken V2. Also if you ask me the kayak looks to have no room if you are gonna be fishing on it.
Looking at a smaller fishing boat that is easy to car top and this seems like it would be just the ticket. The Big Fish intrigues me too, but at almost 100lbs it seems like bad things could happen lifting that thing, while this I could always just muscle if I had to.
Have you had a chance to try the 12.5 Moken PDL? I’m thinking through the Moken 10 PDL, Moken 12.5 PDL, and the seastream angler 120 PD for fishing. I’m really curious on which one you feel is the most stable and Versatile. The Angler and 10 are both 35 “ wide while the 12 is only 32” wide. I don’t have any shops near me to try before I buy. I’m 5’11 right at 250.
I have the same short list and no local dealer so I'm going by reviews. What did you end up with? The 12.5 PDL is not going to do it for me. Want that 35" width. The 10 vs 120, SS has storage but added length, weight, no hull access. I'm 6-0 220.
I bought this kayak here in Austin TX yesterday. I'm 5 8" and I had the seat way too far back lol. I was wondering why it was hard to paddle and move. Anyone new to kayaking, move the seat forward so your feet can rest on the slant where the peddle drive bar is connected to the two metal things up front. Since I'm fat it was hard to peddle drive but the point of buying it was so I can lose weight and hopefully when I do the peddling won't be so hard for me. I have no problems with the kayak. It works, does its job. No nitpicking from me.
I have the OT Sportsman 120 paddle only version for fishing and I am adding the Loon 126 Angler to my fleet this year. Looking forward to having a sit inside option and it is hard to beat the quality of Old Town. Great videos and honest reviews. Keep up the great work!
I'm thinking I'm either going to get this, or the malone seawing with that load assist from the back you showed in another video. Thanks again for another helpful video.
In your personal opinion between the moken10 pdl or the seastream 125 which would you choose?I’m 5’9 275 and can’t decide between the two. The biggish 108 was in the running hit I think it’s to much boat to car top if I don’t want to bring the truck
I got mine about a week ago, got everything set up but haven't taken it out for a spin yet. Taking it out tomorrow morning. Plan to fish in it. This is my first pedal drive. Wish me luck!
Took it out on the lake for about 4 hours. Seat was very comfortable. Kayak was very stable. Peddling was way more comfortable than it looked like in this video haha I think he might have been sitting a little too far back maybe. Speed is decent, but not really faster than paddling with good form, way more fun though. Fishing from it was fine, but with the pedal drive in front of you, you basically store everything behind you, which can be a hassle without attachments. Overall I thought it was very fun to use and would recommend it.
I might not have been the best person show off this boat. After a broken femur and a dislocated hip, I have a pretty funky gait. But despite that I did not find it uncomfortable to pedal. I am looking forward to trying the 12.5 PDL. I think that would be the better boat for me. The 10 would be great for anyone with a shorter inseam that doesn't walk like John Wayne....
Thanks for sharing, nice to see the Compass for sure. But, wish I could find more videos of the S12, the comparison you did vs the skylark and aventura still remains as the only on-the-water review available on RU-vid. I can’t find any on-line customer reviews for the S12 either, even on Facebook. Maybe you know of some others.
Helpful Consumer Advice: I'm 6'3", with relatively long legs compared to my torso, and am looking for a tourer to upgrade from my 14' Riot Enduro with it's 90cm long cockpit to something lighter... because lifting the current boat is getting harder as I get older. First I tried was a S15LV... because was the easiest to get off the rack, and sadly I couldn't get into it... nor the S16 either, as I can't get knees into the cockpit... The sales guy steered me towards some heavier alternatives to the Stellar range, but I wasn't impressed by the weight, and was even looking at inflatable alternatives when the head of the dealership mentioned that even though the cockpits are the same size on paper, the leading edge of the cockpit on the S14 G2 is higher than the 15, 16 and even the 18. Jackpot! I can fit quite well! It's $AU3600 for the Advantage including rudder, but only $AU300 more for the Excel (Kevlar) so that upgrade is a no brainer... but either way it's not pocket change.
