This is why I (licensed home inspector, ICC qualified building inspector, working on my civil engineering degree) will DIY any home project I can. Too many half-baked "contractors" out there that cut corners and rip people off.
The boards should have lag bolts holding them into the wall. Should. They should have built on top of those boards, not to match them. Literally the worst building job I have ever seen.
Damn shame these kinda people underbid my work. Shame on them and shame on customers who help these phonies thrive bc they penny pinch. Good work aint cheap and cheap work aint good.
that deck looks great compared to the one my step dad built around 8 years ago. the steps are falling off, and the paint he kept saying was stain is mostly chipped off. stain dont chip off, it soaks into the wood. the deck boards are unevenly spaced as well.
I am a deck contractor. This is the worst I have ever seen. You should sue them, have this deck removed and rebuilt properly. The railings will have to be replaced.
I'd be interested in more info on this, including an update. You kept saying it was supposed to be a floating deck. Do you mean it wasn't supposed to have vertical support posts other than on the steps? If so, it would've been cantilevered, but it doesn't look cantilevered, so I don't know what you're talking about. Did you get a permit? Was this inspected for code-compliance? Did you have a formal contract with design specs? That thing is just trash. Sorry, but it's unsalvageable. Do over. You can try suing the contractor, but U.S. laws tend to protect the con-men, not their victims.
I can picture that crew. Probably hard-working guys who just have no idea what they're doing. Some slick contractor came by to sell the job, then sent a crew of exploited, incompetent day laborers who don't know how to plan ahead, use tools properly, do any kind of math, etc. They just know they need to throw _something_ together to get paid, because it's hard for the contractor to lose a civil suit as long as they build _anything,_ no matter how bad.
The real question is whether the homeowners VOTE in a way that enables and ensures accountability, through consumer protections, class-action suits, building regulations, code enforcement, etc. If not, cry me a river. Anyone who thinks industries regulate themselves should go have a party on that deck.
You wouldnt get paid lol especially if i already knew a thing or 2 about decks. Thats why cheap labor is a waste of time youll get some "Deck builders" like this lol they hav3 no businesses being in deck building.
How many " worst deck ever " videos are there on YT? it would be interesting to see a compilation of the all to determine which one really is the " worst "
