When we were in school (Northwestern High School in Detroit) James was a beast! He walked the halls with his sax! Those were the days! We were a family! We turned out some of the most coolest musicians! I could name a lot more, and James is one of us!
I have heard nearly all of Lee. Seen him. Chatted with him. I’ve never heard him use that strange tonal device (from about 7:30) before. I can’t help wondering what Lennie Tristano would have made of that. Lee payed his dues to Lennie but was never in his pocket. Much later in life Lee seemed to me to reach out back to his time with Lennie. Lee’s body of work is peerless. And his legacy is on a par with that of Bird.

I get what everyone is saying, and clearly he has unbelievable control over the instrument, but there was a good 20 seconds in there where he’s using it for evil. He’s just awfully screeching out as many notes as he can with no melody or thought and i just can’t stand it. To be clear he is obviously an outstanding saxophonist but some of that was really hard to listen to.
