So great to see a video from you again, and its just the message I needed to hear! Honestly, you can take as much or as little time as you like between posting, because the value and substance of what you share is always worth the wait
y'know that whole "dragons are one of the hardest things to draw and animate" thing would have been good to know before i started animating exclusively with dragons for the past 4 years i'm fine (:
Do you have any suggestions for books to learn about title animations? My main use case is to make educational RU-vid videos. I want to be able to add gripping text effects to my videos. I am looking for something that will help me there. Thanks for the video!
Glad to hear this kind of self awareness from you! I have also been pondering on this, while trying to stay up to date in creating content, but couldn't bring it out with words. This is like staying true to oneself, even if current internet trends don't align with oneself.
So happy to see this. I thought to myself the other day..."What happened to Howard Wimshurst"...Glad to see you're okay and doing your thing. You're inspiration man.
I always appreciate the genuineness of intention and clear artistic effort presented in these videos. Inspires me in my own endeavors Immensely. Keep up the good work man!
To me, it's kinda a bit of both, I wanna challege myself as creator animator, but I don't wanna burnout as I did on my last one. I'm planning new animations, shorter ones because that's the mood now, at least I'll try to do most the ones that I'm in mood about. But yeah like everyone else we take our own time to finish. XD'' Btw nice video. =)
This is the exact conversation i had with myself the other day. I have tried to just focus on posting for social media to get my followers up, but i realized that it isnt what i love doing. I didnt feel like it made my art improve whenever i kept doing the same type of art in the same style.
Howard Wimsthurst, I respect you a whole lot because you are the most authentic artist I have ever followed. The video is so insightful. The work you put in it is amazing. I missed you a whole lot because you have not been uploading as much as you used to, but videos like this one make the times you pop up much more special. Thank you for the work you do. I am still learning from you a whole lot.
I've also been dipping in terms of my productivity and upload. I think we go through a stage at our life where we reflect what we want to do, what it means for us to make stuff, and whether we are making it for ourselves or for others. As human beings, it is absolutely normal to have this need to belong to a community, whether its following a trend, or finding a niche group of folks. Sometimes I feel like making stuff that feels genuinely for me, and sometimes there are times where I do want to appeal to a crowd. Atleast we are self aware of that. Good video man!
2:21 I couldn't answer on the server that time but I want to say that the biggest trouble is 'AI'. I recently read a post saying, "AI was good to do my laundry and cleaning and I'd continue my Art and Writing but AI is doing Art and Writing and I..." This is true. I am worried for our employment in the future. And the AI companies just go on and on making more efficient, more powerful AI versions.
Art. You can never put content over art. Art is culture. Art is history, literature, music, cooking and agriculture. No platform shall replace all that our ancestors created for thousands of years. We need to form allies if we are going to keep art alive. And AI is one of the many allies we may need to get people safely into a new reformed society in North America. It will make even Russia and China cry for a utopia that has given universal healthcare to all that is willing to come our nation and keep art alive.
Thanks for sharing this thought process. It is really important to know why we choose to do something. Especially a creative pursuit. Animation is all consuming, when you put a craft into it. As you said, if you are doing it just for views, then you will have different approach to creating what you make. If you are doing it for the passion of breathing life into the characters and the stories, you will approach it in a different way. Life isn't always about the money, views, popularity. As long as you be honest to knowing your why, and to who you are, then your magic will happen.
Man! Thank you so much for this video. I'm an animator who focuses on quality instead of quantity, and i'm really enjoying the process of each video. The biggest thing i love about that, is I'm improving something each time i upload a video. I hope you all the best 🙌
I actually related to this on a deep level. I've currently been working on this animation project for about 2 to 3 years, and while I would love to pump out episode after episode of an animation that people might watch, I have to feel fulfilled in knowing I'm giving it the due diligence and time and care it deserves. The team that's helped me with this deserves no less and I would love to live this dream one day but for now I'm just taking the time to perfect it and hone my skills so the animation can be at least as close as I envisioned it when I first began this project. Much love Howard and glad to see you're doing good and having similar thoughts to me and other animators as we navigate the way we want to accomplish our goals and dreams ❤
With Sora AI in a couple years, anybody will be able to make a high quality 2D animation in minutes for free. I think your friend is right in that you should get bigger on RU-vid and grow your brand. That's something AI can't replace.
I’m glad you did post this. The same choice is faced by every writer and artist, especially if they count on the proceeds of their art to pay the bills. The best advice I’ve heard is, “Never lose your taste for simple food.” The lower your overhead, the greater your freedom.
That's great wisdom! I have felt a bit of "lifestyle inflation" creeping in to my life as of late. I need to remind myself that some of these things I pay for are just luxuries that risk weighing me down.
For a decade RU-vid has been at the back of my mind, coming up with ideas, making thumbnails; but I could never bring myself to edit one because I don't have a drive to do RU-vid: *I want to Direct films.* Deep down movies have always been my favorite art form. So I'm also preparing to make a series of short films leading to my first feature.
Yea, I am stuck between wanting to turn animating and storytelling in general a full time job... AND with having a presence on social media, and wanting to pay the bills doing my own creations. (and starting much later than most) Right now I work full time, but would want to scale back and eventually do animation/storytelling for a full time job.
Great to see a new vid from you! Always hearing your thoughts on these topics. The sweet spot is to bridge gap between art and commerce, content and authentic expression. The two can be combined. But sometimes you can't bridge that gap, and that's ok. Finding a balance between personal art and client work is key. Freelancing can put food on the table, but personal art feeds the soul. My goal this year is to find that balance.
If you upload, people like me will watch it and stick around, even if it's not often. Quality is always good with you and that is what matters to us. I can totally relate even though I'm a tiny channel in comparison. Im never gonna be a full on content creator but thats okay. I love making animations and Ive learned the hard way to just do it at my own pace now instead of trying to pump out clips of stuff when I don't have time between work and everything else. There's also one thing I've always been firm on from the start which is to only make animations about things I enjoy personally. Then if other people like it that's bonus and I'm thankful for whatever views I get. I could make a Star Wars animation because it's popular and would get me views and subscribers but I dont because I don't really care about Star Wars. I'd never be able to put the care and attention to detail into it that I can into a Tomb Raider one; something that I know inside out and have loved for years. Just doing what I'm doing now, I have a small following that's super lovely and supportive when I upload and I'm happy to have that ❤
