@@colinbarbour4713 yea or a soft plastic in a jig. Lots of guys walleye fish that way but not many do it with a pin. I have done it with live bait too for walleye and pike.
You're fishing one of my favorite spots for large mouth. Next time invite me lol do you do good for chrome at the mouth? I do well in the creek but never at the mouth for chrome
Nice video! I never seen a largemouth bass with black lips before, but that's cool to see. Those are some nice looking jerk baits, nice colors and look very well made.
@@scottwinslow940 yeah that black lift bass is one of the cooler bass I have ever got. Definitely very unique. Thanks I’m glad you did them. I make them all myself. I have a lot of fun coming up with designs and painting them up. It’s crazy rewarding when you catch a nice fish on the lure that you made yourself, especially when it’s a new design and you get a good one right off the bat the first time you try. I have pretty much been using nothing else sense spring and have been catching just as many if not more fish than usual.
@@steinerp I always mix it up a lot. With that particular jerk bait I like to do some good twitches. I was getting bunch on the straight fast retreive at first, and then after the bite slowed down, I was getting them on a slower retrieve. I definitely work them a lot slower when going against the current and typically faster when going with the current. I also like to suspend them with the current a lot.
Hey- Ive seen a lot of videos from you and I am actively reading stocking reports for Ingham Clinton and Eaton county- Have you caught salmon or trout in that spot of the red cedar?
@@dudedude481 yes. They are easier to find on the Grand typically. I have been fishing that river more than once a week for 10 years and I have caught both in there. Not a lot and when I target salmon and steelhead, I always drive further west. But if you get the timing and location and presentation correct, it is possible to catch salmon and steelhead in the red cedar River. Good luck to you in your quest. If you try hard enough and long enough, you should be able to encounter some and when you do, it will be an accomplishment.
This video is timely. Looking to put a casting rig in my boat to float fish. Is this rod heavy enough for Salmon in the Big Manistee or would you move up to the 8-17 lbs version?
I would go with the 8-17 I have caught kings on this rod but with 12lb line I have lost a few. Handles steelhead and coho fine but for kings the ability to use heavier line will be nice.
I finally met Darren a couple weekends ago down south at a dam skam fishing! Super cool dude. I also found my first 2 skamania later that day float fishing!
When you’re fishing with beads, do you recommend keeping the bobber facing down river and dragging the presentation across the floor, or up river and letting the bead reach the fish first? I attempted bead fishing this last spring but I think I was doing something wrong :(
Technically, both can work, but as a general rule, your barber should point upstream, and your bait should kick out in front of it downstream. Usually when people struggle with float fishing, it is either because of location and timing or because you’re not setting it at the right depth. Make sure you find bottom and then come up just a little bit from there so that you know, it’s floating around a few inches of the bottom where the fish typically are hanging out. Also the better job you do mending the line the more natural your drifts will look and the more likely will be to end up putting it where you want to. Just keep it one day you’ll catch one or two and then have the confidence to re-create it in other Spots or other times.
@@ReelMichiganAnglers …well, you won’t like this bro but, A Rainbow trout is simply not a steelhead until it hits salt water. Same species, yes, but the anadromous rainbow has its own classification. -Oncorhynchus mykiss irideus. Absolutely amazing fish in the Great Lakes!! No denying that. No salt? No steel.
@@ReelMichiganAnglers I almost always fish in clear water conditions for chub and trout. Size no 2 silver in sunny days and gold in cloudy days have always yielded for me. That's my experience at least.
Excellent video! That looked like a pretty nice trout stream, may I ask what spinner you were using ? I enjoy all of your videos and hope you get time to make some more.
I have caught a few nice pike and a few decent bass in that stretch. I used to Take my kids to the playground there and fish every once in a while when they were younger.
I have seen several videos by others of the Platte River weir. It’s amazing to see so many fish backed up like that. I grew up in Michigan and have fished for kings and cohos since their first run back up into the rivers. I’m trying to time my trip this fall to see this spectacle. GM sent me out of Michigan on the world tour as plants close and or relocate the work. Currently in southern Indiana, I’m planning my fall trip and staying at the Platte River campground. Do you remember the date when you filmed this? Would be awesome to see this. C’mon down and fish Giant cats with us sometime. We get fish up to 100 pounds.
I have always wanted to go south a bit for some cats. Y’all get some gar that we don’t have too I think. That video was a few years ago, but I believe it was September when we were there.
Nightcrawlers on a circle hook. On the bottom at whatever depth, the fish happen to be hanging out at. I actually have no idea how deep the water is there.
The Han warmer pocket sits at the rib cage on me. I have not got water in the zipper pocket yet but have had some pockets fill from the bottom of the pocket before so I know the struggle lol the design on this zipper pocket looks good though.
Great video. I used to fish the Thornapple near Alaska with friends years ago. We had to walk through corn fields and woods to get to the spots. Would love to know where you can Wader fish the river....please help! tks!
@@markheidema3699 lol I should have realized so yeah by time you get up till like the third damn and above it seems pretty Wable. I waited a good amount of distance below that third damn without too much trouble. If you wanted to cover ground, you might have to get out to go around a hole or some walk jams, but I would give it seven or eight out of 10 as far as wadeability
100% chance of death when you eat them. Sounds like you kill more fish than I do… I do wish more lures came stock with single hooks though that is always my preference anyway.
How do rig for salmon what kind of line, what lb test, what type leader and length and if you had to pick one type bait what would it be? Liked your video learned some things. Thank you.
I fish a 20lb mono or braid mainline and a 15-20 lb Flurocarbon leader 6-36 inches depending on the situation. For lures straight 20lb braid works fine. Skein, beads, jigs, spinners and crank baits like thundersticks are my favorite.
I wish I could catch such a giant lake-run brown trout in the State of Michigan while I am alive. I have been checking what rivers have been stocked with brown trout.
Both are correct. I usually find them in slow deep sections of rivers and lakes. Michigan has plenty but people often don’t land them due to armor plated mouths that are hard to drive a hook into.
We recently added 32nd ounce jigs in addition to 16th ounce for tube jigs. All hair jigs are currently 32nd ounce but we are working on larger sizes and should have those available soon.
I’ve been using FC sniper lately, but I have had overall very good luck with P line salmon, steelhead line and P line tactical fluro. They are both pretty expensive, but so is the FC sniper..
We offer a selection of glass beads on our website. They are actually pretty cool. I haven’t had a chance to use them a lot myself but I like them in certain situations. Jason also works for bloop making their jigs and knows a lot of the painting secrets so we just don’t compete on that market out of respect for our friends. Besides that, there’s already several really good companies that make really good beads. It really comes down to finding the ones that work best in the conditions you fish most often. For me, I fish the grand river more than anything else and the grand river is a lot dirtier and faster so the beads that work well there Are the same as when I go up north, and clear slower water.
