The main focus of this channel are tutorials about mapping heritage in Ireland using OpenStreetMap. I try to visit the places I map as much as possible, so you'll also get a bit of local history in the videos. Subtitles are usually available at least in English.
Some of my other interests like music are featured to a lesser extend.

Great video! Unfortunately wasn't able to view this live, but glad I got a chance to watch now. I always learn things from your videos, including some of the plugins and extra keyboard shortcuts that I'll be using in future. Your channel is a great resource. I've also been meaning to do a bit more on OSMIrl tasking manager and will do again soon. You're doing a great work. Many thanks! (OSM handle: IpswichEdits)
@@cynicalb I think that if it had been Patrick, that would have been remembered locally. I think there are stories connecting the local saint Lactan with the serpent, but in the Schools' Collection story, the saint has no name.
Hello ! Thanks to your video we were able to see this well yesterday. We uncovered the steps leading down, they'd been overgrown heavily with grass, moss and weeds. Someone had killed some of the overgrowth around the well since your video was taken. It's a shame this isn't sign posted and kept up to a higher standard. Thanks again for your video !
This is great im trying to build out my own walking / hiking trails app with react native and expo. Iv gotten mapbox integrated well with my app itself and built out all the authentication and UI / navigation. Now I need to add in real trail data from OSM so I can then display like custom cards or pins with trail data on all the trails in the U.S. Is there any process like you show where i can download all the data I need and built it out on my app? I know AllTrails uses a tileset server with all the OSM tiles they downloaded to use on there app but was not sure if there would be an easier way to do this without having to have a separate server just for the OSM tile data. Hopefully this makes sense im looking for some assistance on this question. Great Video, learned a lot. Thank you!
Hi and thanks for watching the video and commenting. Unfortunately, I don't have the technical knowledge to help you with your questions. I know that tile servers are used, but that is as far as my knowledge goes. I'm sure there are people on GitHub or similar websites where you can find help, though. Best of luck!
Another point......the thing about hiding in tunnels and Soutterains. Us Picts, have them, and we also have ghe circle forts, and Brochs, similar ti the Nurragis of Sardinia. The Romans eradicated the HQ of the 'Sea Peoples' in AD 100, after Carthiginia, and the Punic Wars. We must appreciate, that the Celt warrior culture, stretched as far as Thracia, in Anatolia, and the Romans, spent a couple of thousand years, rolling back and annihalting all Celtic cultures. They simply hated us, because we were the best individual fighters, on the planet. They never did, realise that Dynastic Dream, of eradicating the last military stronghold, in Alba, (Scotland), even after 400 years. BUT THEIR LEGACY OF UNIVERSAL CATHOLOCISM, did, quietly, eradicate our culture, after the 1100s, by destroying most of our historical artefacts. So, yes, all Celts, who survived the Romans, eventually ended up in Scotland, and that is why, the Romans built three times as many Forts, in Scotland, allied with there walls, than in fighting any other Celtic culture. Consequently, the 'tunnel' metaphor, became our children's bedtime story, for overseas invaders, like my Vikinger ancestors. Firepsych@gmx.co.uk
Can I jusy say this...thanks very much......I think you are correct obout the Danan ref, because in Scotland, the 'Danes' were known as Fresians, as in Dumfries (The Fort of the Fresians), and Fresian cattle. Also the word Viking, is not a noun, but an adjective. It denoted raiders from the sea, just as Scotti, denoted the same, coming from Ireland. Since my gene pool, originated in Stockholm, 2, 000 years ago, and Budapest, (Hun), at a similar time, but importantly, my ancestors were in Rathlin island, 3,700 years ago, at least, and I am 40% of Greek ancestry also. So, it looks like the Vikingers, may have came to Rathlin island, set up a community there, possibly with a Greek 'Eve', and yhenceforth became part of the Atlantic Facade, the sea peoples, who moved on up to Sweden and then back to invade England, as the Anglo Saxons, AD 400, where my ancestors also are based, in, (Thames/Cambridge, Hul, York). Thesewarrior Celts, also invaded Belfast, initially, and are the Rb1, psychopaths. (Yes, maybe even me)...... And have the Hemochromatosis and blue eyes...(Also me!) gene. PS...never invite them to a party...😂
Excellent! Thanks so much for this. Out of interest, do you have any videos or other guidance on adding information boards? For example, I recently came across an already-mapped board with these tags: (board_type=history, information=board, tourism=information) and I took a photo of it. Am I allowed to take a photo of it and put it on Wikimedia Commons or does copyright apply (or is there a better option than Wikimedia for this purpose). And if that's all ok, what's the best way to tag it so it links to it correctly? Thanks for your work on this channel!
I don't see why copyright would be an issue, depending on where you live, it should fall under "freedom of panorama". If the information panel itself says something about copyright and sharing restrictions (I have never seen that), you have to respect those, of course. If for some reason, you don't want to use Wikimedia, you can use Flickr or any other platform where you don't have to log in to see content (like Facebook) and use the "image" key with the image url as the value. There is also an option to add image:license to the node. And I don't seem to have done any other videos on that topic, but I should, I suppose. Using SC is a bit awkward.
@@OSM4HistoryBuffs Thanks so much for the quick reply. That's reassuring. While I assumed they wouldn't mind, I didn't know about Freedom of Panorama. Thanks again for the advice. Your youtube channel really is a top resource and underrated. I've learned a lot from your videos. I've enjoyed contributing a little to OSMIRL after watching your videos on that subject, and will do so again as soon as I have the time. Thanks. Dave (IpswichEdits) (I should add that I'm using JOSM most of the time. When out and about I tend to use EveryDoor more frequently than SC)
@@davebulow2 Thanks you so much for your feedback; it is very reassuring and shows me a bit of where people are who watch them. I don't use SC as much as I used to; I'm really warming up to EveryDoor instead, but still also use OSMAnd. And for desktop mapping, I tend to use JOSM more than iD, but iD is more accessible for beginners.
thanks for the video. learnt a lot.. tip - you can use password manager to manage your (hundreds of) passwords.. login with Google is scary for me as I have multiple accounts and if I used other google account by mistake, the platform creates a new account..
I like the construction animation (also the parts where the bricks seem to have their own will), but I would have liked it if a once constructed wall were to stay instead of being demolished and rebuild over and over again. That way one has a less busy picture to compare with what you say. Maybe instead at the end of the chapter demolish the wall once? Anyways, thanks for showing and explaining so many variaties, I would not have expected there to be so many!
Love this. I've been slowly discovering boundary stones around my town too, happened across some Air Ministry (AM) and Home Office Prison Department (HOPD) ones.
Another thing: adding a few pictures with the Mapillary phone app by turning around in a circle is also super helpful to map what was mentioned in the note. Also, please always suggest to log in first. Otherwise there is no way to communicate follow up questions.
How are the shoes holding up? I've made a handful of pairs of shoes and I'm always worried that I'm using too thin of leather. What thickness would you recommend for these 1 piece shoes? They are beautiful.
If you mean OpenStreetMap, I have several videos on my channel to get you started. There are lots of useful apps like StreetComplete, EveryDoor or OSMAnd to map on the go which I have tutorials about as well. If you mean WikiMedia, when you say "Wikipedia" (bc autocorrect sometimes prefers WP over WM), I have videos about that as well, as have other channels. Wikipedia is not within the scope of my channel.
@@christopherd.winnan8701 That depends entirely on what your interests are and what needs mapping in your area. Give StreetComplete a try to see what's missing nearby. You won't need to know any tags for that. You can choose your missions on it, be it addresses, accessibility, street furniture etc etc. Or watch a tutorial on how to map buildings using the iD editor on a large screen.
So true, maybe it goes to show that religion has always been a bit of a pick and mix. But some priests had tag trees chopped down, because of their pagan associations.
I am going to use my Instal360 X3 to map the Manila American Cemetery which is not on Google Maps, StreetView. I will have to give OpenStreetMap some study. 56,000 men and women are buried there and they deserve recognition for their sacrifice. Nice video.
