See “Kailua Windsurfing for Seniors” I strongly recommend Exocet Windsup 11’8 and the new Ezzy cheetah 5.0 with RDM mast and boom. It will keep you on the water having a good time kfor years, also get 6.0 and 7.0 if you can afford. Short boards are for tough guys only.
great video !!!!! well I am intermediate wing foiler 91 kgs on a 125 liters and I am wondering how it would be if I drop to 105 liters? Staying on knees or upright on the 105 liters board will my 91 kgs kind of sinking ? Generall speaking 10 liters above the weight of the rider does the board sinks when on your knees or standing with no air in the wing ?
Wow...one of the best clips on this topic...I am thinking to get into it again after 25years hiatus and have to learn again about brands ,classes and sails. I am 6foot 2, 110kg and fairly sportive. I am looking for fast fun here on the Mediterranean sea. Waterstart and jibe experience are still alive😁 ... What would be a good board to look for ?thanks
Totally agree. That's why I almost stopped. Then was excited by winging at the beginning, before it became almost as complex, if not worse... I think my next watersport will be surfing, and then probably swimming 😀
Im finding it interesting. I just bought a bunch of gear for $100. Now i have three boards nine sails 2 masts and s booms. Now to figure out out where to start.
Take A Moment My friend I am a 64yrs old guy living in Calgary. 25 years and you are an inspiration. Flat calm water, 50 km wind. Ice in November. Thank you Glide Safe Stay Silly Stay Free 🎉
Awesome review! I’ve heard the north mode handles the top end really well, but at the expense of getting going on the bottom end. How does the Mantis Apex compare to the North Mode in this regard?
What an average comment. If you got nothing out of that, it says more about you. Please enlighten to me your wisdom or what is is that the your useless criticism is trying to achieve? Better still, send me a link your effort..
Hey bro consumer here. Sorry I hurt your feelings. Watch a lot of these videos. Just wasn’t getting any ROI on my time. . Great content very informative just a stupid comment. Sorry. My bad.
Great info as always! So as we go up the psi and frame stiffness levels do you reckon that hooks and harness lines are now part of the sport? Could you do a feature on good hook+harness line setups? 😊 Thanks 😊 Greetings from Estonia!
Windsurfing is quite a difficult sport to learn and starting with a board that is too small is likely to lead to frustration. You'll have a lot more fun starting with a larger board. I’m not saying its impossible to start on a smaller board, I actually learnt on a small board in strong wind, but the spot was waist deep everywhere so i could beach start. I then went up to a bigger board to learn tacking, gybing, basic freestyle which helped be progress much faster.
Great video. Im a 70kg beginner. Took 2 lessons and already hooked. Thinking about starting on a Free ride board. Any suggestions as far as volume? Looking to cruise around in the Ocean when it’s 10kt+ winds.
At a certain point it’s all weight dependent too. As a 200 lb rider I love it when a guy that weighs 140 comes up to tell me to get a dinky board. I’m like trying taping a 45 lb weight and two 10 lb weights to the deck then come back and talk to me. 🤣
Yes, It's possible to uphaul small boards. You are also really light so you can start a bit smaller. It is still our recommendation for everyone new to the sport to start with 140-200l boards to progress quickly and make it as fun as possible.
Im very close to getting back into wave sailing after 30 years. Im going to initially be sailing at Rhosneiger. I’m 90kg and I’m considering the quantum 105 or 115 as it’s been recommended as a perfect board for Rhossy. I’m only going to buy 1 board. I’m 57 years old so not as nimble as I used to be. What would you go for ?
Hello Sean, being based in Australia we're not very familiar with the conditions over there but average wind conditions that you expect to sail in would normally play a large part in the decision. However, that said, I would recommend the 115 to be on the safe side as it will float you nicely which will help you get out in moderate conditions and assist your transistion back into the sport as progressively as possible. Modern wave boards are far shorter than the boards from 30 years ago so the larger sizes are still nice and nimble.
@SHQ: great video, thanks. Question: Will the 118L Code board (the biggest in the range) work well for a 200 lbs beginner? To let you know my level, I've taken a couple of lessons in the Summer and also planning to practice Snow Winging this winter. So I won't be a complete newbie when I plan to use the board on water next Spring, though I'll be a newbie to riding a hydrofoil.
I am 73 and 150 pounds- very fit. I sailed a Mistral Competition 25 years ago and recently got back into windsurfing with a Windsurfer LT Race. All lake sailing here; winds 4-20+ MPH (Ezzy 5.8 and 6.5 sails) . Stability is important at my age- but having a ball. I would like to try a lighter shorter board for faster tacking, gybing, planing etc- but want similar stability to the LT. I have looked at the Tahe 160D etc. How would you compare the shorter (say 10' or so) and wider boards with the Windsurfer LT for stability? Also absolutely require a daggerboard. Thanks for your great videos. Dale
Try a JP SLW 165 litre. 58 cm fin. You won’t need a dagger board. Easy to uphaul. Super stable when slogging. Fly’s in 12- 20 kts with 6.5- 8.5 sail. You will love it. I do on the Great Lakes where conditions can change in a heart beat
Hi do you think a fanatic 5.5 97l would be OK for a 65kg windsurfer? Keeping in mind that I've been taking lessons and am just up and foiling with some control. Pumping seems to come naturally so bonus ...thanks
I think the 97l would be a nice safe, easy size for you. You may want to consider the next size down too. The 97l may feel a bit too big after a few sessions. Have Fun!!
Hi m8. Very nice and usefull video!!! I'm a relatively new windsurfer(freeride) with not much time but I'm willing to do as much as I can. I have bought equipment and I am now in the process of changing boom. I want to buy a caron boom and I don't know what to get. My sails are from 5.5 to 7.2 (185cm-205cm) and they are all NP. I'm looking at these and I want you to recommend me: 1) DUOTONE BOOM PLATINUM SLS HYBRID 2022, 2) SEVERNE BOOM ENIGMA FREEMOVE 2022, 3) Monocoque Carbon Boom Pro White - DYNAFIBER. Also, if you have any other suggestions, thanks. I'm also trying to perfect the waterstart!!! Do you suggest i need to change the size of the board to a smaller one? I have a fanatic 145lt. Be well and thank you!!!
Thanks for your question Fotis. A Carbon Boom is a great way to take your riding to the next level. The Duotone & Severne booms you mentioned are good choices, (We've not stocked the DYNAFIBER so can't speak to that). You may also want to look at the NeilPryde XC. The final choice will come down to feel & your budget. Get your hands on them & see what you like as they will all feel slightly different in your hands. In regards to the board, focus on your technique & just practice, practice, practice. Have fun!😁
Nice review! I live in North Carolina and will be traveling to Melbourne for Dec and Jan. Bringing my wing foil gear with me. I’ll definitely stop by the shop to get some insights on the best local riding spots and check out the gear😀
I own a Fanatic Sky Wing, and there is a reason I wish I didn't. They have a little ridge running down the center of the foam deck pad, and it is so hard on the chest and sternum it creates a bruise in a line. It's also rough on your knees when you are kneeling cross-board. It makes paddling in a prone position very painful, especially if you use the board every day. No one will borrow my board in any condition where you have to paddle even 50 yards. I'm totally unsatisfied but can't afford another board right now.
Thank you. Had been looking for a genuine review about the Sky Wing. Though I was more worried about the sloppyness with choppy water, seems like you brought up another important problem. Both of these are real concerns for someone like me who is still spending quite a bit of time (during lessons) on the board itself (not being up on the foil) on choppy inland waters.
@@kurt9497 I know- unfortunate for me. I have a kalama now, the fanatic sits unused in a shed, brand new. I'll never buy from a large board manufacturer again, especially fanatic. This sport is so new it has great small-business oriented manufacturers.
