These are a few of my old home movies from my motocross and desert racing days in the early '70s. Most of the footage was shot in the San Diego, CA area.
Talk about a Blast from the Past? That is frickin' awedome!! I remember those days with the heavy bikes. My mom bought my brother an INDIAN Dirt Bike around 79-80. I wonder what he did with it? That would be a serious collector's item. Thanks for sharing this. ;-)
+Robert Thomas As best as I can remember it was east of Encinitas and west of Highway 395 but north of Miramar NAS. There was no official track, just lots of open land where people rode and would sometimes hold races.
This race was held at Mt.Signal, on the South side of 98. If you watch at the 30 second mark, you will see Pinto mountain (sand) in the background on the start.
It's Bill J's. son again, Randy. If you think my father might remember you, I'm sure he'd love to talk hang gliders and the Free Flight days. I could make that happen. Message me on my youtube profile page. Thanks! -Randy
Cool, I went to that race too. I sneaked into the pits and got some good pictures. I have a picture of Roger and Ake on the starting line next to each other.
I rode there in either 71 or 73, it turned into a deluge and flooded the entire course. I was pushed off to the left of the start into a ravine. Managed to get out of there and caught up to some of my buddies Denny Johnston, Orlando Appodeca and a few others. Being from Escondido, it was a race to remember. Have some 8mm will restore ad recode fr digital video.
I recognize this video as a clip from a movie that my father's company made: "The New Freedom". It was a promotional about his company, Free Flight Systems. Thanks for posting. do you have any more raw footage from this era? My Dad would love to see it. Thanks!
Great video, I might have been there that day. I use to go to Saddle a lot back then and watch the races and ride the mini bike track on my yamaha mini enduro.
I remember this place well. Dean Dennison of Ramona bought one of the 1st Honda Elsinore 125cc in 1973 and raced there when I was 13. Pat Peil built the track on his property on Barona Mesa. He was one of our businesses (Ramona Oil) customers.
@rentatrip1 I meant to reply to your comment long ago. Sorry for the delay. Yes, I have a bunch of 8mm film from 1972 - 1976. It's all been copied and a DVD given to Ken DeRussy for his hang gliding museum and archives. One of these days I'll sort through the video myself and upload the stuff here.
I grew up in uc use to ride threw the canyons to get to miamar to ride and thats where my dad in 1974 broke his leg didnt think i would find anything like this on youtube cool to see this.
this ..if it was filmed at the John J. Montgomery Meet is a very very rare clip- Thank You Do you have more footage of hang gliders? Neil Larson USHGA #24
@PissedoffCWO2 Glad you enjoyed the movie. Yeah, a lot of great riding spots have been gobbled up by "progress." The development I live in used to be a popular local riding spot according to the local old timers.
Devil's Drop....rad. Best place to sit..you could see almost the whole track from there, plus you always had a chance to catch the goggles from the winner.
carlsbad i might say that bmx was born in carlsbad, but ive seen pictures from 1968 where two teens are welding a mono-shock in to a 20"schiwinn frame and preparing for a dirtbike race in mexicali, so which town deserves it?
