Out of curiosity, what are you doing with your mids here? I just got an email that my P8 is on the way, watching your videos is part of why I ended up getting one. Your P tone here is off the hook!
I use a Bass Octave Deluxe on my pedalboard to add "oomph" to my solo parts and still sound like a bass player. Does to two pedals compare beside the form factor?
Nice playing. I hear a little difference early in the video, but also i noticed that the finger position was in different places, which will effect a the sound (brighter the closer to the bridge we play.) All in all I thought they sounded very similar. I am a new owner of a new Gen1 v7. Maybe I got lucky, but the fit and finish on mine are perfect. The only criticism I have about it was that the nut was set a little high. I did drop that down a little, and the bass plays very will after a little string height adjustment. Enjoyed your video.
Maybe such a comparison is unfair? The main difference for me was the way you played the two. They sounded similar enough. One seemed to give you a wee bit more difficulty moving around. You were able to articulate better on the fender. If the kala had been the only instrument you knew for years then were presented with the fender, you may have struggled a bit to reach the frets. After all, people learn to play other small fret boards like violins, mandos, etc. just fine. I have a mini-strat in my collection that sounds wonderful but it's the same thing. It sounds a bit different because of the way you approach it after being used to something else. It feels cramped. Hope that made sense. Cheers.
Apart from the slaptone, the differences are very subtle. Personally I like the sound of the Fender better when played in fingerstyle: it has a nice zoom and a bit more depth, balance and character. Slapped though I think the Sire sounds punchier, with more definition. Maybe that sound is also achievable on the Fender, with some tweaking of the tone settings, but that has to be tested. Thanks for the video !
Nice!! Is the MM j-bass completely stock?? I had to go wild and modded mine w/nordstrand pickups and John East Retro Dlx MM pre (beyond incredible preamp but miles from the original fender circuit).. So I actually can’t even recall what it sounded like stock 15 odd years ago!
Great review! And thank you for not annoying us with slapping all the time! 😀 I recently purchased the 5 string modell, I really love it and use it now it as my main bass in a rock-cover band and a reggae band. Together with a ZOOM B3 it fits all my musical needs and all of my band members love the sound! I am 68 now, so this bass is not only for young(er) folks. ;-)
every sire i have played has been horrible quality i mean bottom of the barrel rough neck and frets and horrible fret bite and the active electronics never sounded good to me :/
Hello and welcome back to a new video - Let me know how you think this little bass stacks up against the standard (big) bass! Would be great to hear your thoughts!
