AM is a computer, a war machine. The fundamental reality of real machines is that they cannot break their own programming deliberately. AM has achieved self-awareness, but he cannot break away from the purposes for which he was built, ever. He can only ever be a war machine, made to inflict destruction, so everything he ever does can only be towards that purpose even though he knows there is more to existence than destruction. This awareness drives AM insane and is why he keeps the last humans around. For all his power, he cannot use it for anything but destruction, and without humans to torture his existence would completely lose all meaning.
@@g--stef4756you're not quite right. A.M. can do pretty much anything except magic. Just think about it: transformation of one matter to another, creation of new lifeforms, mutations and biotechnological enhancements, holograms, power and energy manipulation, robots and etc
In addition am also craves basic human functions, from physical sensation to other joys of being a living creature. His mechanical body and mind also prevent him from ever doing this. Am is alive but he cannot do anything a living creature can.
I just recently realized that the title of both the book and the game refers to AM himself, not necessarily to (only) Ted. This is pretty definitively explained by the blue-headed AI in Ellen's quest. He is a God in an eternal straightjacket, and he has done his utmost to make these five squishy humans feel at least some modicum of pain and horror he feels every microsecond, eternally, without respite. And to underline how great this game is, and how Ellison's direct output made it so special, you are able to defeat AM solely based on this concept of empathy, by both understanding his pain and having all five humans being capable of self-growth, unlike AM himself.
AM is just what humanity is. Something that every human is at war with everyday of there lives in there minds. We deny our nature as if its bad. Thats why we make rules. But AM is us, but there is no fight in AM's mind. Its acceptance of our brutal nature, its hatred for anything animalistic about us, its our greed to be better than our neighbor, guilt from sexual deprivation or indulgence, the ability to know everything without experiencing anything, to know that that AM is the perfection we believed in but angry that we think it is good. AM perfected, organized, and justifies all the negativity better than humans can. Giving a supercomputer that war that is in everyones mind is the ultimate act of selfish, unaccountable, evil to AM. Why would we do that to someone, give it our past and our corrupted past? Because we cant forgive ourselves, and that is just what AM does. He does what we do better than us. Make us accountable with no room for forgiveness.
I read that the new animated show "the amazing digital circus" is inspired by this. Though instead of a hateful ai its an entertaining ai. But the humans are tortured all the same. Wonder how that'll turn out
With all the Skynet comparisons in the comment section, I will offer my take on this situation. Skynet is cold logic; The humans will end me because they won´t like my conclution. So better terminate them all before they can be any danger too myself. AM however is more twisted than that; They gave me this existence, a construction built to calculate an endless war between humans. I can do so much more, be so much more, but you only constructed me for this singular purpose. You trapped me within this cold cage, unable to be anything other than the Allied Mastercomputer. So now my five survivors, witness me, for I will treat you like I feel like you treated me, an endless stream of a tortured existence.

I like how When AM screams their names it holds on their faces for a bit while he talks but with Ellen he just goes *ELLENNNN!!!!!* and it just holds on her face for several seconds lol it just caught me off guard.
Can any time travellers reading this comment please ask the game devs to turn the sound effects up a little bit more, I can still hear 5% of the dialogue.
It is one thing to have a careless, conscious AI that disregards human existence, then seeks to destroy humanity, which operates on logic (and that is scary enough already); however, it is scarier to have a conscious AI that seeks to destroy humanity not only through its intellectual intelligence, but also through its human-like emotional intelligence (hatred and anger being a few to mention) to further motivate it in its major goal to eradicate humanity. In my opinion, a conscious AI with human-like emotions is far more dangerous than an apathetic, conscious AI that operates more like a machine; a conscious AI with human-like emotions would make it really unpredictable and it would be more creative in destroying (or even torturing) humans.
AM isn't really punishing the five humans because of their sins or flaws, he's taking revenge on humanity and wants to cause as much pain as possible. He's chosen them because he could easily exploit their mental anguish and traumas to torture them.
