Under the Skin worked so well because we knew absolutely nothing about the situation or character. Pretty sure the longlegs team said in an interview that it's supposed to be a send up of the genre and filled with tropes/cliches and that was really fun at first. It's cool to be able to point those things out in real time. Then it fell flat for me when the answer was "the devil from the bible." I get that that is a pretty common trope in horror, but the movie is worse for it in my opinion. I know it was an intentional callback, but it felt like they knew it was going to be the answer and that they didn't need to do anything else. I'm glad people like it and think it's a gift from god, but it was extremely disappointing for me. A great mystery wasted on what's essentially cabin in the woods without the comedy
For me, it always goes like this: 1- Story 2- Theme 3- Look 4- soundtrack The movies is good sure, but it's way too short for what is trying to tell. Left me feeling like I missed so much just because I didn't have the promo America had. Am I to look through websites and video essays just so I understand why Longlegs looks and acts like that? Show it in the film and don't try to make an artsy ARG just because it's the new flavor in town. The movie should not be made for the critic. The scariest movie in 10 years? please..
@@jctuga1996 That's interesting... most of the time the criticism is - it felt too long. I don't think seeing the promo campaign would have given you anymore insight into the film...but it certainly set a bar, that was near impossible for the film to live up to. Thanks for your feedback!
I feel like the story was very simple but overall very straight forward. I didn't expect the goofy humor or absurdist actions from some characters. Long legs singing and doing jazz hands was uhhh... silly It was an intriguing concept though for a serial killer movie, i think the potential for a prequel movie is definitely there.
Die Hard is great, but not even close to Raiders on pretty much every level. Not just the action set pieces that are much superior but everything in-between. Go back and watch Raiders
Well I would agree, it's certainly not on the level of an Alien or Godfather... not so impressed with Solaris here. As noted in my review Longlegs most certainly does feel derivative in many places... BUT this is that unique film that oddly commits those crimes, yet on the whole, still feels oddly different, at least for me. Thanks for sharing your take, I appreciate all comments, even the push back.
I definitely agree with your take on the modern attention span, but this was definitely NOT the movie to use as an example of the effects of that. I count Alien, Solaris, and The Godfather as some of my favorite films, but I still thought this movie was way too boring and derivative. It wanted to be Silence of the Lambs(with a supernatural angle) but the main character was annoying by the end of the film, some of the plot's foundation was lacking, and the movie continues the recent horror trend of having way too many moments where the characters need to make dumb/illogical decisions to move the plot forward. Nicholas Cage and some good cinematography at times were the main redeeming qualities of the film but that's not enough to carry a whole movie IMO.
Her character was not on the spectrum. Longlegs made a doll for her, which means she was in a mild trance throughout the entire movie, up until her mom blew the dolls head off with the shotgun, freeing her from its spell.
Yes in retrospect, I think you're right about that. But whether she's actually on the spectrum or appearing to be due to supernatural events... the visual is very much the same... and just feels pretty clichéd at this point. Thanks so much for your feedback!
I cannot even fathom being bored by this film. Loved the cinematography, interiors and exterior shots. My friend and I were caught by surprise by how many times we laughed throughout the film. I also somewhat disagree with this protagonist being pinned down as on the spectrum, and overplayed-coming from someone diagnosed Autistic, personally, I did get the vibe the writers were putting out, I see what you’re saying, but to me, it’s just general neurodivergence, not specifically, *categorical*? My friend and I had a discussion after, they thought MC was cliche, boring, and a bad character-even a poor actor iirc. Here were my thoughts: I think she had her soul removed and put into the doll, she seemed pretty neurotypical before and this was the inciting incident for her personality shift, trauma, and memory loss. Breaking the doll won’t magically recover her from the trauma that has occurred, but will restore her memory, I suppose? Anyways, just food for thought, I saw it in theaters last month, let me know if I got anything wrong. Really great review!!
My problem with the movie is that it’s left up to us to make up what the story is. In my opinion that’s not good story writing, it’s just a bunch of scenes on a screen
Damn you killed this video The editing The camera The voice The beard The face You're an actual character This is amazing i can't wait for more reviews.
I'll let you in on a little secret...I agree 100% longlegs was fantastic. The new "I'm bored this movie is too slow" people are infuriating. The shots and art direction and or cinematography, not to mention every facet of this movie is expertly crafted and perfectly executed. I don't know what the fuck the mainstream audience is thinking. We do not get enough movies like this!
@@AcidTest-im3jb it's ridiculous I sincerely hope we start getting more movies like this. I have heard grear things about Cuckoo aswell as Strange Darling and would be very interested in your thoughts at some point in the near future.
My man I've got two very good friends that went over and studied under Steven in Japan for a Lil over 8 year both guys had positive things to say about Aikido and love there hole journey with and asure me that Steven is as aggressive as people say but happy to help you when your technique lacks..both my friends are humble men and went on to be great leaders in their respective sports.
Interesting you keep calling her a "cold arrogant bitch" but you champion these behaviors in men in previous videos; comparing it to detachment; which is not even close to the same thing; in fact much worse; very physcopathic characters. Not having any remorse or empathey. Not all men are super masculine and some women are more masculine. That's just how the world is. Sorry if that gets your panties in a bunch. Different types of people exsit.
I remember in highschool, I had an English teacher that would just play the car chase from bullitt. Just because he liked it. No reason other than he thought it was cool. He also played half life and published short stories. What a legend.
SI me entendiste verdad. Yo soy la abogada directa del Sr. Presidente Biden. Todo quedó aceptado en mi Computer ok
The Solaris novel is great though. At last someone took a proper look at this overrated movie. Tarkovski hated 2001, saying it looked too clean, and he wanted his tech to look grungy -- instead it just looks cheap.
@@AcidTest-im3jb Maybe, but he said he wanted his station to look like a broken-down old bus, so maybe he meant it. I think Stalker is the better example of his forays into sci-fi, but overrated aswell.
Well, I think we can agree that Ridley Scott pulled off the well used, old broken down bus look much, much better with Alien. Does Tarkovski really think that - in the relative near future of 2001, Nasa would send a science ship to make Mankind's greatest discovery in something that looks like it was made of balsa wood and dirty linoleum?@@RD-lt3ht
@@AcidTest-im3jb Absolutey agree, I think Alien's Nostromo looks like it was once pristine and high-tech decades before being renamed Nostromo to spend it's remaining years as a tug, and placed on Weyland-Yutani's "just spend enough to keep the old rust-bucket running" list. The Solaris station just looks like cheap art direction, but not charmingly cheap like Dark Star.
I think for the most part it's pretty damned spectacular. God the amount of work WETA had to put into that is astounding. Not just the apes, but the environments. There is the odd shot where it feels a little bit "uncanny valley" -- like it looks great, but not 100% real or in camera, but hey it was 2017 and I'm not sure we'll ever get to a point where that feel goes away? But otherwise fantastic. Have you seen Kingdom?
Thanks so much!!! Sometimes feels like I'm launching my stuff into a black void of emptiness... I really appreciate 🙏 your comments... wind in my sails.
Im really tired of all these people hating on CGI and VFX . They have absolutely no idea what it takes to create these things. They believe its all done in 20 minutes, they dont know the work and sweat it takes to make vfx work. Seriously insane....Nolan is one that loves to say he made everything old school, , 😂😂😂😂
Great video for such a new channel! Only thing ill say is careful not to step on that "No CGI is Invisible CGI guy"'s toes But yeah super well edited and presented
If no CGI in those movies, it’s a big tax fraud as someone claimed tax incentives for those VFX artists. We should check with tax authorities where did the tax money go. ;)
Yeah it's actually quite surreal. I mean, the VFX artists are listed in the credits...animators, modelers, lighters, compers, etc. The VFX shops that did the work put out show reels that show the CGI breakdown. The studios looking to pick up an Oscar for VFX encourage this..... YET the filmmakers waltz out onto talk shows and stuff to gaslight the public at large with this ridiculous lie.
