Looking at video games of the past to inform and influence your gaming future!
Most modern video games build upon the features and choices made by those that came before. Knowing more about games of the past can help inform what you like about recent games played, discover new games and highlight genre defining classics that enrich anyone's game catalog!
The only thing that was a helpful tip was look out for currents. Everything else said here was basically "play the game doing trial and error until you memorize the level" A tip that you missed was "do not touch the seaweed on the bottoms as they are an instant death. They also have a current that suck you down into them"
Great question! It looks like someone made a custom ROM for Snail Maze, but as it's not part of the Mega SG BIOS it's not playable on its own. Custom ROM - www.leadedsolder.com/2023/08/22/snail-maze-romhack.html
@@WhatGameBefore you asked what do you like to do with your game gear games, “play them”👍🏻. But seriously love those cases, I’ve got about 10 in original boxes and 30 loose, I might invest in some of those cases👍🏻😎.
Games covered in this video: - Super Mario Bros - Limbo - Ori and the Will of the Wisps - Mega Man - Super Mario Bros 3 - Super Mario World - Super Mario 64 - Braid - Bionic Commando Rearmed - Deadlight - Sonic the Hedgehog - Sonic Mania - Mega Man 11 - Kid Icarus - Celeste - Ghosts 'n' Goblins - Contra - E-SWAT - Metal Slug X - Altered Beast - Another World - Prince of Persia - Flashback - Hue - Sonic CD - Super Metroid - Castlevania - Shantae: Half-Genie Hero - Ori and the Blind Forest - Dead Cells - Iconoclasts
I think precision platformers like Celest and Super Meat Boy and auto runners like Geomatry Dash and 8-Bit Runner should have gotten their own sections. Besides that, great video.
Thanks for the feedback - a few people have called out some missing types for games like the ones you mentioned. I should start planning a part 2 of this video 😀
Great video but a bit misleading with the terms used (of course...what's in a word with genres, but hear me out). I don't consider run & gun, metroidvanias, as well as hack & slash as platformers...although they might have elements of platforming. All of these games you mentioned are primarily action games, but rather than saying platformers, they should be listed as 2D sidescrollers. A run & gun / hack & slash game might involve jumping on platforms, but typically the main skill that comes out is your ability to kill and avoid being killed by enemies. Same goes for metroidvanias, but the element of exploration and backtracking (as opposed to levels) is then added, as well as bosses, which leads us to games like Hollow Knight, or the classic Wonder Boy series. A true 'pure' platformer challenges you on the platforming front mainly. Celeste, Super Meatboy, VVVVVV, Super Hexagon, N, Super Mario Bros, Sonic, and the classic Pitfall, are great examples of platformers. Games like Ori & The Blind Forest sits somewhere between a platformer and a metroidvania. Anyway it's hard to clearly define a genre because there will always be games that do something different, and that's the beauty of it.
Well said! This was an early take of mine on 2D games and I aimed to find groupings of game sub types with platforms. I would counterpoint that the platforms are a necessary part of each game format, even if they're not the central game feature, but a lot of it is personal preference too. Thanks for watching and I apologize if you felt it was misleading!
The best part of the Mega SG with the Master System is the ability to turn on and off the FM chip which was a Japanese Exclusive. With it turned on, the audio sounds a lot closer to Sega Genesis quality vs the normal Master System audio. You of course have the ability to turn it on and off.
@@WhatGameBefore I like to think of ADA only mentioning stuff useful to people on the struggle bus. Definitely not for people with a modest amount of initiative or combat system power users 😂
When you're changing blows with him dodge back and then immediatly counter attack, it always take a lot of damage and you can combo him. I did that a lot and always worked.
@@WhatGameBefore You're welcome bro, from a runner to another. I try to play in an agressive style, always moving around while overwelming with attacks. This game seems to not favour players who plays calm and awaits for good momments to attack, and is more about putting pressure on their enemies not letting them move. But then it's might be just me, this is how I always play after all. It's always good to have more then one fight style in videogames to adapt and change strategy against different bosses. But try being agressive, shows Anubis who is really faster.
You are a genius. I think you use a lot of sprite frames to render ledge in different angle coordinates, and reverse their sprite frames when ledge must be render in other side of vertical axis of tower, right ?
Looks great! I assume there wasn’t any soldering involved? I’ve repaired some consoles before, but anything with soldering has scared me away, haha. Nice work on this!
Mine were all loose too. @Heaaaps posted a video about Custom Game Cases and they're great - that's what you see on the shelf here 😀 Check them out! www.customgamecases.com/
@@WhatGameBefore 😂 I feel you! First time I jumped in Jehuty I was in awe. As fast as you can plot your attacks you can engage and move on. Can't wait to play the whole game in VR!!!
I think the delay may have actually helped it a little bit. We will see. I still own all the games on handheld, so the only reasons why I'd get this are: 1) I actually get good enough and understand the PvP to play it online or 2) They rebalance a lot of the units/COs, especially if they want the game to have a competitive online. If it's mostly just a remaster that lets more people play the campaigns, well I already have the campaigns.
The Reboot is an inferior product, the only AW fan incentive or buying it is the dynamic OST, thats all we are getting, AWBY already offer the definitive online Advanced wars experience, and honestly that site is running laps around nintendo, dont buy the reboot camp, just emulate AW1 AW2 AWDS and even AW:DoR, if you want to play it online, just google: "Advanced Wars by Web ".
I like the look of Advance Wars by Web, and the "offline" method of play is fun but definitely slower than fully online play. Hopefully, both can exist online together.
I don't have to imagine - this is me already 😀 There is an audience for Switch Online though over emulators - people without a PC or a Steam Deck, kids who have a switch already but don't know how to get emulators set up, etc. Go with your preference for these retro games though!
Whoa those 3d graphics... I hate them... Finished the first one way back when (on an EZflashIV cart on the SP). Last mission was a pain iirc and then never got into the second one as the story continued with that CO ("Sturm" was it?). Having the game online and play against others though... Yeah could be a hit. Sadly though I think RTS>turn based combat (likely; it'll be like playing a board game vs a random).
I'm definitely on the fence with the graphics - the look of the original games was good enough already 😀 Here's hoping the online play is where it shines. There's been a few comments waiting for online matches, with maybe even a league structure too if we're lucky!
I have no doubt this game will sale a million copies. Literally every switch game with a Nintendo logo on it sells at least a million. Even that one board game collection and all the fitness games and Arms. The switch just has a massive player base where if 5% buys a game that'll be close to 6million copies sold. Of course I don't really think advance wars would sell 2mill in it's lifetime but it should be enough to warrant a new game.
