Hello and welcome to Scale Stuff . I enjoy building scale models and making RU-vid videos On this channel I share my hobby and try and help out my fellow model makers even if that is just by showing where I went wrong! On my channel you can expect; In depth builds reviews models of kits that I have made, I like to show what is in the box, how the kit builds, and how I paint the model. I am not a fan of just looking at the sprues in a plastic model kit and calling it done, as so much can crop up along the way with any build. I also like to drop in a bit about the real subject vehicle.
Though the channel is mostly model making and painting, from time to time I also release videos around my other hobbies such as free flight and model boat building, however these are few and far between and wont replace the normal model video releases
I release a video every other week on Monday at 4:30 GMT time
Anyway thank you for stopping by I hope you enjoy the channel
My dad was born in 58 and he was talking to me recently about the spitfire models he used to make as a kid, well I was looking into them yesterday and stumbled across airfix, turns out it's the same company that made the ones he used to build, well its his birthday in November and I'm going to get him a spitfire kit, would this one be a good kit for me to get? I've noticed they have different prices Cheers Matt
Nice that sounds like a really good gift, this one would be perfect for the old classic kit feel for him ( its not the same kit tho you can still get them) but would be easy for him to build and more detailed than the ones he did as a kid. Any other questions just ask as I know its daunting getting these things for other people
Thanks for getting back to me, yeah he's getting older now and I've got an 8 year old son so thought it could be a good thing for us all to do, are the 1/72 easier to build than the 1/48? With the 1/24 being most difficult? I think that seems to be what I can gather from looking on the website. Have you got anything on your channel covering a 1/48 spitfire model Cheers
Thats just the size of the model, 1/48 is a bit bigger and there fore has more details so becomes a longer build, 1/24 is twice the size of 1/48 so has even more details, Id say 1/48 is a good gift size as its not tiny like a 1/72 and if he used to make models and his older a bigger model might be a bit easier. I have done a 1/48 spitfire but its not due to be released for a while, thats was the tamiya one and the first few steps where insanly involed, so wouldnt say that make would be best for a getting back into the hobby kit
Just a heads up on this kit. It is currently available on the Airfix website as part of the Weathering Bundle for £49.99. The kit has been revised with photo etch and individual track links but no tank crew. For some reason it includes two turrets , one with the bustle and one without it.
Thanks for the heads up mate, the bustle and no bustle is the early and late version tigers I think. Thanks for the heads up a bit of photo etch would go a long way on this kit
Nice build. But you should really invest in an airbrush. Although I do appreciate a hand painted model, that airbrush will take you to a whole new level. 👍👍
I just dont get on with them, for me there to much work cleaning them out and testing before painting, I used to have one but it just clogged up. But I do get what your saying, maybe one day when ive got a proper work area for like a compressor
@@scalestuff1066 I dreamed of having an airbrush as a kid. But they were the equivalent of $2K back then. Finally got one and love it. If you look up a few care methods on RU-vid you will find a lot of hints on simple cleaning methods and ways to avoid clogs. Hope you can create a bigger space. Good luck to you Sir and have a great day.
Yeah they where pricey, I think my trouble was I had one of the cheap revell airbrushes and it was not the best. To be fair maybe it will happen down the line, Im using so much spray paint these days, so might make sense even if its just a basic one for base coats on the model. Thanks dude hope you have a good day and look after your self
Um scuse me Mr Man. You harp on and on at me that tank is a tank because it has a fully rotating tower - where, pray tell, is the Tadpole’s rotating tower?!?!?
The sponsons left and right are counted as rotating turrets, but yeah by later standards it would be more like a double barreled tank destroyer, guess like anything the first of something gets to make all the rules for those that come after. bonus fact, there only called tanks because that was the code used to hide that they where weapons
Nothing to apologies for mate, and no not for a long time I did years ago but I dont really have the right space or money. I never got on with the old cheap airbrush that I used to own and its kind of put me off using them, but I get that im limted in what I do. but youtubes a sea of airbrushing channels and brush painting is what most people seem to do. I figure I can be a good brush painter, or a bog standard airbrusher
Not sure if youll answer but seeing recent comments, do i need cement? [the instructions say i need cement so im bot sure ;-;, or can i just use glue cause im struggling to even build the cockpit since well, im not using anything to connect the pieces [edit:] if I need glue or cement, what brand should I get?
You need cement mate, tamiya liquid polys a good brand, the white lid not the green, as thats extra thin and wont be great if your new to the hobby, humbrol do a clear liquid cement to mate
I enjoyed your build video. The Mosquito came out nicely! Appreciate the caution about the Bomb bay. Only question, thought you would have put the decals down before the weathering? Either way great work!
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah the bomb bays really one to watch, with the decals I like to weather them in with the whole plane as other wise they end up looking to bright and stuck on afterwards. But thank you glad you liked the build :)
Its a really good kit mate you will enjoy the build on this one, the bits sprue it comes with is really good. Wish I had done a full build video for it
Yes mate, Ah gutted yeah it is ent it :/ I last went down there last year but couldn't make it this year, love the place its awesome really want to go down for tiger fest to see all the WW2 stuff running. last time we went we got to see all the odd training tanks for driving lessons. Have you seen them? its like a big open box with space for the instructors to sit behind the learners?
Ah dude get it on the check list, i went round there with my mate, and got to the end and was said " i wish it was bigger i cant belive we got round it that quick" he looked at his watch and it had been 5 hours. Wasnt even a show on, and we missed the storage area where loads of tanks are just packed in ( that areas only open certain days )
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed seeing the convoy in the cabinet, just about to film the 1:35 scale stuff and thats a bit of a bigger task been building them a lot longer
Cheers for the sub and glad you enjoy the content, I hope you like the upcoming videos, its taking me a while to find a style but should come through in some of the later videos, What do you mean by stuff on screen?
@@scalestuff1066 by stuff on screen, im just a bit sour of like stuff in the way 🤣 everyone has their style, i quite like it cuz its chill and just really entertaining 😃
Cheers mate, not done a big stugg for the channel but I have done them in the past, I will be making one over the winter tho, the German stuff seems to do really well
Thanks mate think this is the last shorter build, ah... i hate that I build a model to look like the real tank warts and all, mean I get why some people wouldn't want to see certain images, but seems to me that they could just throw them in the bin. feels like a PC thing to do, that maybe saves them a few pennies and the "no offense" is an excuse. mean that symbols banned in Germany but don't see why the entire model company needs to change for one place
@@scalestuff1066 Yeh i agree it’s definitely weird, but the airfix one came with the decals that were then covered over in black marker, i must say it was very odd
@@ljscalemodels526 sorry mate, I know the pain all to well then, ive got a dimetrodon on the side atm which is going to end up on the shelf of doom, have a look at the lindberg model dimetrodon and yeah, I want to fix him, but that might mean making new molds and melting him down
I know this is a 2 year old video but may i ask i question, im building this model and am a bit confused with the instructions for the pilot figure. I think the guidance is a little unclear, im not sure which parts to paint 24 trainer yellow and which to paint 72 khaki drill. Are you able to advise me, and not to worry if not :) Thanks
No worries, the yellow would be the life jacket on him, and the khaki drill would be mask and helmet I believe, hope that helps if more helps needed can send links to RAF uniforms
Have you considered adding UV paints? Many animals can see in UV light, giving the world around them a different look. As an example research ducks UV vision.
Oh ive seen the UV images of things like bluetits and starlings, its an interesting idea to do on a model. I would be more inclined to paint with it if I had a black light tho, but thats an interesting idea on a different angle for painting dinosaurs
They came with the model, this is the older airfix tiger 1, look for the tiger tank in the new red box, but on a desert back ground , this is the box art to look for www.scalemates.com/kits/airfix-a1357-tiger-i-early-version--1190305
Came with the model, this is the older version of the airfix kit that comes with them in the box, look for the box with the desert as the back ground for the tank and the 131 decals are in that boxed version
Hey, im currently buying paints for this kit, and i couldn't find Paints shown in video... But i found similar colours: for oxide red is either "gory red" or "scarlet red". And for gun mask its "ochra". Can you please search up those colours and tell me will these fit the model??
The red oxides a spray paint it comes up under TS, but the gory reds to pink and the sarlets to bright, this is the paint I used on amazon, www.amazon.co.uk/TAMIYA-87160-Making-Primer-Contents/dp/B00IJSFT4C?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A2MDGKHPVHG6FN mission models do a red oxide primer, Vallejo 60ml Primer - German Red Brown (RAL 8012) would be another good one . The ochra looks alright for the gun masks, sorry couldnt be of more help can have a look at humbrol ranges if you need
Deffo, youtubes funny about references to certain things hahahaha, I've built to many kits in rooms that needed a window opening! Cheers mate, glad you found the video helpful and remember don't spray the tracks or they melt! Best of luck on your build
Humbrol liquid I think as this is a older video, I use Tamiya liquid cement, white bottle NOT the green I find that to thin. The Tamiya glues the same but cheaper
these kits are a lot of fun if you want to practise painting /weathering techniques, I have built the hummel thats advertised on your kit box along with a panzer IV and a British crusader tank, it would be nice if these kits did come with a basic set of decals though.
Nice Id have liked to have built the Hummel but they where out of stock when I got these in, I've got a Achilles video coming up, With the decals tho, I mean the kits are so cheap even an extra £1 for decals would still make them insanely affordable
I still remember the first time I built this kit in the 60’s.. Great then But wasn’t the commanders hatch open on the cupola?… or am I confusing that with the Panther model. ( thanks Madds). Alan
I think this is the newer starter set, I think you might be confusing it with the panther sorry mate, I do need to build the old Airfix panther tho , its the one kit in the line up I haven't got round to making yet
@@scalestuff1066 Actually I did some research and the earlier Tiger from Airfix did have open hatches including the commanders on the turret. Pity Airfix didn’t continue this on their new’er! model.. My favourite is still their Panther though. My first tank model .. Have a great day..
Sorry then mate stand corrected, Ive not built an old tiger but know this one never had hatches, its finding some of the older kits now tho they can be tricky things to get! But yeah agree with you on that would have been nice to have the two options as I do enjoy the vintage classics kits ( many more of them to come on the channel btw) Same to you mate take care
Just picked one of these up at a local HobbyTown USA as a way of easing back into modeling, specifically because it was cheap ($15), small, and simple. Loved your video.
Welcome back to the hobby, perfect choice for an ease back into the hobby mate wish you the best on your build. And thank you glad you enjoyed the video.
Nicely done. I think some forget this is a STARTER kit. And this veteran modeller sometimes LIKES the simplicity of a single piece track assemblies. Done well, painted adequately, and it looks as good as a kit that uses dozens of pieces for a track assembly.
Yeah I hear you, quite often I paint models like the dinosaurs as a bit of a relax, for what it is the kits great and great for those starting or looking for a relaxed build, with the tracks especially the ww2 german tanks, there can be so many wheels on them that it can put off a new model maker and if you put a wheel on wrong, throw off the whole builds. Thanks for stopping by and the comment
Hi there. I know this is an old video so I'm not expecting a reply but I thought id ask. I am wanting to get into modelling and I am torn between this Firefly and the Airfix Cromwell you covered in another video. Which would you recommend for a complete novice or do you have a different recommendation of hopefully a British tank kit?
I would say to go for the fire fly, its more modern and goes together easier than the Cromwell, as the Cromwell's got lots of clean up to do. The hardest part of the Firefly build is painting the tracks as they are one piece but can be painted with a bit of patience. Best of luck on your first build tho! and don't hesitate to drop me a comment if you need any tips along the way. Best of luck on your build
@@scalestuff1066 Thank you so much. I've just been bingeing a load of your vids for tips and tricks as you don't tend to use fancy methods from what I've seen and most are very beginner friendly. I'm definitely going to stick around and your channel has definitely been one of the most friendly that I've seen. Many thanks. 👍
Well I hope they help you out, for this tank I found that a can of humbrol 155 olive drab was a good base coat and easy to put on as a first hit on the model. trying to make the model for the everyman, im not some great who spends years on painting. And any time any questions just ask. If you do go for spray paint, a light hit, quick spray left to right about 30 cms away then move, builds up a fine coat and if in doubt dont add more paint!
I’ve just started modelling as an old geezer after about a break of around 45 years 😂 I used to be useless building them as a kid and would get glue everywhere. Hoping by using Tamiya thin cement on a brush will go some way to avoiding this. I’ve also bought a cheapish airbrush to use my acrylic Humbrol paints with. Am I right in thinking I need to use thinners in order to make it sprayable? Also, one last beginner question, do I need to use primer? I saw elsewhere that people said you should but I don’t remember you priming this? Oh, also, is there a similar humbrol weathering paint for that used/dirty effect like you finished with on this build? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for posting this video cos it’s a help to see it come out so good! No doubt old sticky fingers here will F it up though! lol 😮😊😂
With the Tamiya cement just keep the use light, and dab a little off before using it as it can puddle and run, but its much easier to get a decent coat on with liquid as a pose to the gel stuff. Yeah with the airbrushes you need to thin down a lot of paints, Vallejo air comes pre thinned, but you need to thin the paint a little more. If you are using an airbrush I would said that you need a thin coat of primer on the model first, I don't always prime my models but depending on the shade you are using a base coat can really help. With an airbrush if you get into painting with them, you can do a great job by painting a black under coat, and then going around the panel lines with white before adding a fine coat of the colour you want it showing the subtle shades underneath , its called pre shading and can make a very nice effect on a model. With regards to the dirty paint, any brown will do really its just a matter of watering it down and application, thinking where you want to make the model look like its been, I love BS dark earth as it looks like the red clay soil by me and just looks more natural to me. And no worries for all the questions happy to help out in any way I can. sure you will do great tho mate, model making just takes a bit of practice, everyone gets into there own routine and once you know how to avoid your own brand of sticky fingers you start to see progress. As a side note, some of the models on the channel I made over 2 years ago now and my methods are very slowly changing in time, the longer I paint the more I seem to water down paint!
@@scalestuff1066 thanks for the advice. I’ll definitely try the pre-shading technique. Can I ask, do you ever try to do weathering like having a chipped paint or pitted paint or rust on any of your models? What is your favourite brand of kits and have you ever done a very large scale kit? Last question. Have you ever made your own diorama? I’ve seen some amazing work on here where some modellers actually make buildings, etc themselves from scratch! Pretty advanced stuff but absolutely stunning. I think if I live to be 145 or 150 I might be good enough to attempt something along those lines! 😂
@@scalestuff1066 regarding the preshading, the black undercoat, is that a black primer? Or would you use normal primer then the base black coat, spray thinly in white along the panel lines. Then the actual colour you want over all of it but not so thickly applied as to cover it all up? I guess the final part is a bit tricky and you’d need to ensure the paint flow is pretty low so it’s applied very thinly?
I would imagine that black primer would be best, better than adding more coats than needed, the base coat only needs to be fine tho as to not mask details, but i imagine normal paint would work well to. And yeah the last coat needs to be thin so you can see through it very slightly but would be worth the effort. Yes I think I did a guide on sponge chipping not to long ago, I have but not made a video on it, used hairspray to make a chipping coat on a ww2 white washed T34, and I have had a go at using salt grains to do the same thing but found it a bit tricky to get looking perfect. Would be a hard choice to say favourite brand, I like Airfix because I built so much of them as a kid, but I also like Tamiya as there cheap and go together mindlessly but sometimes I find the builds a bit to easy as mentally I switch off a bit. Biggest model I have built there is a video of a long way back and that's the 1/16 scale remote controlled tiger tank, I built and painted that myself, followed by a few of the bigger model boats I have built. I've done a few and there are a few coming up on the channel but not for years, I did do a Monty python black night diorama that turned out really good, there's a picture of it on the banner but I never made the video as I got quite into the build and forgot to press record to much! I have also done a lot of little Tudor houses that I have lit up, but again didn't record the thing as it took weeks and weeks to build. Ah tbh you would be surprised at how fast you can improve, its just about looking and applying new methods, cheap kits are great as paint mules and you can keep trying different things on the same model until you get a look you like and then go and do it on a bigger kit. I have found most of the time the only thing stopping me from getting better is just comfortable routines that I have gotten into, tho if you stick around for 2 years I have really started to try new things in my later videos and hope that trend continues. Sorry for the long reply wanted to reply to each of your questions.
@@scalestuff1066 thanks for taking the time to reply so comprehensively. I have a few 1:76 tank kits to start with (Russian t34, Cromwell iv my grandad drove in ww2, Churchill VI I think my grandad was also co driver on, a Sherman mark 4 (he defo drove those), a Tiger, a Panther, a Russian josef Stalin and the stug you built here. I also have a dday kit with a Sherman firefly vs another Tiger (Michael wittmann’s one the German ace). Just for a bit of variation I got a Curtis plane also in 1:72 scale. So quite a lot to be getting on with. I’ll definitely have a look at your other vids and subscribe. Thanks again for your help. Ps the Monty python one sounds great :)
This came out great. Im building this now, as the reboxed version - Northsea Fishing Trawler. Would appreciate your input on my weathering- videos on my channel.
@@scalestuff1066 it falls together surprisingly well for a mould that old. Except that front of the wheelhouse which I'm sure you remember also. Filler required there only. I've decided to open up all the wheelhouse windows.... May pop a little led inside. Thanks for the inspiration.
@@m0rce1 Yeah just that wheelhouse lets it all down, if you are going to light the shit up, that would look awesome but be sure to line the inside with some tin foil, or otherwise the walls will glow, i learnt that on a small scale titanic i made years ago, in the dark it looked radioactive!
Cheers mate, there simple kits but good fun to paint and they have a lot of textures to work with, the old seris needs a fair bit of green stuff to fill holes in tho
Thanks mate, Nice thats enough for a whole section! is there a plan or a theme for them? you could do one in every camo scheme. Hope all is well Nv way!
