This is 40 years of documentaries - starting in 1977 to today. These films chart a career (mine) - but also a period of Documentary Film-making in which it enjoyed an astonishing independence and an tendency to have "something to say". Some of these films look a bit "clunky" after all this time, legato in tone and pacing, others stand up pretty well. A couple are pretty awful. But it is my work and I am happy to own up to the mistakes if I can get a few smiles of recognition from colleagues with whom I have spent so many happy years. I will keep up loading until I get a reasonable cross-section of the work in a state where it is ready to be viewed by anyone curious enough to do so.
I dont know if you were able to see it - I think the BBC blocked it. I uploaded it because soemone mentioned that scene from Henry IV and my wife/partner and I have made 18 films about Shakespeare's Plays and this was a short sequence from one of them. The series was called Shakespeare Uncovered but I am not allowed to upload it here it seems.
He was rumoured to have said that his height wasn’t a gift. To be honest, he could be the patron Saint of Ukraine, given his size which he claims was a curse. But with his enormous size comes an enormous blessing. He’s a gentle giant. Think of it, he never wanted fame. Just a normal life.
As soon as she arrived in America, she was re-educated to smile stupidly. (Thank God it doesn't seem to have been too effective.) Disgusting thing to do - just to make it seem more appealing to a US audience. They should have tried that with Rachmaninoff many decades earlier ...
I went to a minor public school. It’s funny when you are 13 the headmaster seems formidable and some play up to the role. However I saw my old headmaster a while back and thought “was I really scared of that man.” They seem to stand taller in their fiefdoms than out of them!
Richard, that is an outstanding documentary that you filmed 40 years ago ! And also, a document which is still meaningful in the 2020's. I imagine how many hours where filmed just for this "War & Peace" episode. The text is informative as well. My admiration for this great work of yours.
An interesting 'documentary" But in all honesty you should see Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in the iconic roles of Holmes & Watson before jumping on to the Jeremy Brett was the greatest Holmes bandwagon. Remembering that Holmes was of the Victorian era, these two superb actors do real justice to their respective characters!
Great stuff. Been looking for Francis Combe series forever ! Thank you for this. Is the full series available ? I'd really appreciate it, it's my old school I miss so much. Thank's again
@@richarddenton7724 I think it must be you who walked into assembly, with the new head teacher introducing you and making a comment about you growing a beard , which you denied was a beard.
A whole lot of nothing The guy was obviously no Alexander VI. Looks likw something our own Secret Police [FBI] would produce to smear the Catholic Church.
Conan Doyle was a great storyteller, but frankly not much of a novelist. His 4 Holmes books are all over the place in terms of plot -- long digressions and flashbacks, loosely strung together like the series of short stories they really are. It's harly a surprise that no one ever reads "The White Company" nowadays.
This was such a moving and beautiful film. I can relate to this so much, my parents too had to leave Ukraine after the war ended and met each other in a German labour camp. They both never got the chance to go back to their beloved country. My heart breaks to know what they went through, to see Ukraine suffering again is unbearable.Slava Ukrani, Slava Heroyam xxxx God Bless Alec and all his wonderful family xxx
Still A fan of the books and films of the iconic Detective- My Sherlock Holmes I grew up that gave me an image in my mind of Sherlock Holmes is the late actor Jeremy Brett and his cool Doctor Friend who assist him in the cases-late actor as well David Burke as Dr. John Watson🕵️♂️🔍 🎩
Jeremy Brett and David Burke were the best. While i first saw Holmes with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce - that combo really failed in making Dr. Watson a bumbling idiot.
So easy to understand that Victoria Mullova left the fucking USSR. Who seriously wants to live a life under supervision, controlled, not allowed to mention or to create own opinions? Not allowed to travel? Not allowed to do what ya like?
Thanks Richard, keep them coming 😀. Good to see decent quality versions of these episodes. Very much looking forward to episode 9 and all my schoolmates - we're all turning 60 now!
Thanks for uploading this! I was one of the kids in the playground and then the hall on our first day! I just noticed that they used a couple of seconds of this episode in the Wham documentary on Netflix, while talking about how George and Andrew met at school. I couldn’t believe my eyes! 😂
@@richarddenton7724 I think comprehensive schools have made it easier for the upper classes to dominate everything, because at least with grammar schools you got a few working and lower middle-class people challenging their position. Now no-one challenges it. Some was better than none. But to supporters of comprehensive schools, they don't care about that reality: for them, it's always been all or nothing. Which in reality means nothing.
