As soon as you said greenhouse, I have to know how you do that in Michigan? Is it attached to your house? I suppose you have to heat it for much of the year, living there? Please explain to me.

Crochet needle is great instead of a chopstick, because they have a small hook at the end.

Hey Clint! Thanks very much for your suggestion. Do you find that the hook gets caught up in the roots? That would be my concern, although I haven’t tried it. I have a lot of crochet hooks that I could try, though! Thanks very much for watching :)

Do you recommend this in very humid environments? I use inorganic mounts with sphag for my mounted orchids and I HAVE to keep it away from the stem on any species, from Odorata Retrocalla, to a seedling 'S.J. Nagoran' seedling. I wonder if super glue gel actually works???
@newworldorchids
@newworldorchids 2 года назад
Hi Lindsay! Thanks so much for watching. I have talked to a number of people who have used various glues successfully. I have used E6000 which is a super thick adhesive, and there’s something called “Tilly Tacker” made specifically for attaching tillandsias to mounts. It looks an awful lot like E6000 to me…. I don’t know why you couldn’t use super glue! It definitely dries faster, but it might be harder to get it to work with the plants because it’s runnier/thinner. As for problems with humidity, the obvious question is whether you have enough air circulation. I’m sometimes bad about turning on my fans, and that leads to fungal and bacterial problems. I generally have about 60-90% humidity in the greenhouse, so I would call that humid. I think that even in that environment, mounted plants need water daily in the summer and every 2-3 days in the winter (low light/cooler). But if you have problems with over watering (like I do), then mounting is a much safer way to grow. Baskets are another great option for plants that are hard to mount. I hope that’s helpful! Thanks again!

I'm also a den fan, especially of the little guys, and would love to learn about more of those kinds of orchids. I'm currently growing a Den. bellatulum and Den. parishii. The bellatulum has been tricky for me because I had to dismount it and the roots don't seem to have adjusted well. Anyway, I look forward to more of your videos!

@newworldorchids
@newworldorchids 3 года назад
Thanks, and a great question! Most of the mounted plants are hung on hardware cloth that is zip tied to metal poles running across the support beams of the greenhouse. You can really use any kind of mesh or even (I use this too) repurposed shelving-the kind that has the coated metal wire? You know the type? I have some of those standing on the floor which gives me some portable hanging areas. The more orchids I get, the more I want to mount, and I’m running out of space for everything!

Kristen what an awesome tour you have alot of cool things growing in your greenhouse! The Cattleya Orpetti cross was really nice ...the flower presents itself very well. That Tolumnia Sylvestris was amazing! I remember you buying that dendrobium Tenellum lol How do you grow your dendrobium Kuniko?
@newworldorchids
@newworldorchids 3 года назад
Do you really remember that? So funny! I have two Kunikos-one growing mounted like you saw in the video, and another one that’s around the corner in a 3” mesh pot with moss (I don’t intend to change that moss, by the way). The mounted one is in the Death Valley row that you saw where the propane heaters blow on it whenever the heat kicks on. The ambient temp in the greenhouse is around 60 unless it’s a sunny day. Because of the heater, though, that guy you saw is growing pretty darn dry. I do NOT believe in the “dry winter rest.” I believe that you should let the plants dry between waterings. That’s good enough. Nobody dies. Weeks of no water is insane (in my opinion). Mounted stuff dries so fast in the winter, they spend most of their time dry anyway! In the summer, it will get moved outside again to enjoy the humidity and rain. I generally keep the Dens a little wetter in the summer. There’s my long answer!

@newworldorchids
@newworldorchids 3 года назад
Thanks, Laura! I’m a great believer that if your plant won’t bloom and you think you are doing everything right, try temperature fluctuation. Since your Dracula is in a terrarium, I assume that he’s at a pretty constant temperature. Try putting him in a window sill or even outside for a month or so when temperatures allow. That often does the trick on stubborn orchids.

@carymiller7920 3 года назад
Excellent tour.Thanks. When are plants safe to ship? Often wondered, how you ship plants to shows, or do you drive?
@newworldorchids
@newworldorchids 3 года назад
Hey Cary! I ship plants all year, but this time of year I ship them with a 72 hour heat pack. Unless there are significant delays and some other abuse, that does the trick. As for taking plants to shows, usually I drive which means they just come with me. If I have to fly, I put them in the big plant coffins and bring them with me as luggage. Occasionally, I have had to ship plants in which case I still put them in the big plant coffins and ship them USPS. But if it’s not more than 12 hours, I just automatically plan to drive.
@carymiller7920
@carymiller7920 3 года назад
@@newworldorchids Yes, I have an orchid coffins too, except it is for the plant tags that I have killed, reason for my question about shipping NEW plants.
@newworldorchids
@newworldorchids 3 года назад
Haha! The orchid coffins are the enormous boxes you see me with at the shows. They’re usually tucked under the table. They’re about 48’ x 20” or so. Big enough for me to fit three trays of plants if they’re all standing up. If I super pack the boxes, I can get about 5 trays worth of plants in one box. Oh, and I hang some of the mounted guys off the side of the box (hanging to the inside, of course). It helps that all my stuff is so small. For people that carry big plants, it’s a much bigger headache to fit all the boxes in a vehicle let alone ship them!

Another great video! I love learning so I can be a better friend to my orchids. I have a couple questions... How long do mounts/ sphagnum moss typically last? Also, would you ever consider mounting a Dendrobium moniliforme on rock? Thanks Dr. Kristen ;)
@newworldorchids
@newworldorchids 3 года назад
Dear Lauren, Thanks so much for watching (and visiting)! Most mounts last nearly forever. The exception is that some sheet cork mounts will become flimsy after a few years of keeping them moist. Many of the orchids I have on sheet cork came mounted already, and they tend to be moisture lovers. The nice thing is that if the mount has rotted out from beneath your plant, you don't have to work at getting the plant free! The moss that you use will degrade, but its role is really to help the plant get settled into its new home on the mount. You never need to worry about replacing the moss. If you wanted to add moss at some point because you wanted some extra moisture around the plant, you could do that. Alternatively, you could drape it with a little Spanish moss. As for putting Den. moniliforme on a rock, they LOVE it! You do have to water every day or so, but moniliforme is classified as a lithophyte, so rocks are their friends. I saw a truly gorgeous specimen in Japan mounted upright on a big hunk of probably granite. It was covered in roots. So cool! And I have a number of moniliforme on cork that are growing beautifully, too. I hope that helps! Thanks again!
